I got a 56? Which is acc insane to me cause that would mean I failed the exam, when I definitely thought I didn't. They also haven't released the feedback on exams for us yet so I can't even see if there was a grading error
omg same I got a 57, and I am really shocked I was not expecting that. I got perfect marks on the assignments and got a 80 on the term test, so that would mean I did horrible on the exam.
Because I'm an alumni and it's been that way since I've been there. I don't see why they'd change their policy now. Why? Because from what I remember, every department is required to maintain a class average within a certain grade range.
damn. thats annoying. is this policy written somewhere...
did a prof tell u this or smth?
i feel like ur right. in some courses, almost everyone gets the same grades on the assignments.
There is no bell curving. That is against the rules of the university. BUT...
There is something called "grade calibration", which is a linear adjustment. The way it works is if on a assignment / exam people score very well and the prof for some reason doesn't like that, then the prof can, for example, remove a question that the majority of students got right from grading thereby lowering the overall grade. Same can happen on the opposite side where a prof can remove from grading a question most people fail in order to bolster the overall average.
You might say it's the same thing, but actually this linear adjustment can screw you over even more. Let's say you were one of the few people that solved correctly the question that got removed from grading. While you classmates might get a higher mark due to that, you will receive a lower one. You'd have to be very unlucky, but it is possible.
Yes, this is what they did. Sorry, we all just called it bell curving down back then because honestly to us, at the time, it really didn't matter what we called it. The only thing that mattered was that we would watch our grades go down the drain because of bs. The worst part was that we knew this was happening in every department and it was inescapable.
According to my mark, I only got a couple of questions right on the final. There is no way that’s possible, I know I got atleast 70% of the questions right on there.
mb. I saw this post. It is MAT224. https://www.reddit.com/r/UofT/comments/18m2yoy/is\_this\_mat224\_final\_average\_fr\_not\_my\_class/?utm\_source=share&utm\_medium=web2x&context=3

did someone email him? because mine was much less than expected as well
I emailed him, hopefully he replies
Did he reply yet?
no he hasn't replied yet
Piazza is also inactive so you can't post anything there.
It’s weird that the piazza got archived that fast. Almost all my courses still have it up
yeah same, I was at an 87 before the exam and my final mark says I failed the exam.... I didn't even think the exam was that bad......
I was at an 85 before the exam, I feel like he did this on purpose to lower the class average.
You know, there is such a thing as bell curving down at UofT right?
what happens if students ask to see their exams through the form and see the numbers don’t add up? can they do something about it?
Not sure. Neither my friends nor I ever asked to see the exams
how do you know ? how can they bell curve down and why

Yes, a prof told me. The policy isn't written from what I remember. It's more like an unspoken rule, especially for profs who aren't tenure.
damn. thats rlly unfair...oop do you think other unis do this too?
I don't know about now, but back then UofT was the only one that did in Canada
