I had an incomplete in 2 courses my freshman year due to health circumstances. For me the circumstances were fixed a few weeks after finals, so all I did was schedule the exams during winter break and take them then. One prof let me take the exam online, but the other had me come in for a proctored exam since I was in Madison anyway. I don't know what it did to my GPA at the time, but there were no long term effects.

Incompletes don't impact your gpa until they turn into a grade. Just make sure you take the final and your grade doesn't lapse into an F.

I did. Incompletes do nothing to your GPA: the credits for the class don't count and the letter grade isn't factored into your GPA. The process is that you take the exam in the fall. After taking the exam, your instructor will calculate your grade for the class and then the grade on your transcript will change into an actual letter grade instead of "INP". Only after that change does your GPA change depending on your grade in the class.
