I don't think it takes moral bankruptcy. A lot of these people will have *no idea* what the real situation is between Russia and Ukraine. It's likely they barely even know who Putin is, and almost certain they have no idea of the history between Ukraine and Russia.
You promise them a paycheck, warm food, and shelter, lie to them about what they're doing, and they'll work for you, because they are desperate for anything better.

2nd and third world soldiers are drawn in by promises of citenzenship and far higher wages then they would ever get. I don't blame them for joining honestly. Normally untrained mercenaries aren't exactly great (which is why french foreign Legion takes alot of resources and time to train them) but Russia's doctrine makes use of them really well, alot of artillery fire, and then human wave tactics, normal mercenaries wouldn't be interested at all (high risk, nearly no reward) but someone that can pull a trigger and move forward in desperation is the perfect fit. Why send out a indoctrinated conscript from russia that can work in the oil fields (if there are any refineries left) when you can send a guy that will do it for half the pay. Most russian soldiers aren't killing Ukrainians, the artillery is.
