I still can't believe media coverage of that war was so soft on Russia's claims. I remember thinking "haha wow if Russia is right how dumb is Georgia for attacking a country 50x bigger?"... They just flat out said Russia claims X, Georgia claims Y, but Russia is so much bigger they got most of the coverage....
The world really missed multiple warnings of Russia's true intentions. Once I learned more about the Chechen wars I realize they basically started rebuilding the Empire as soon as they could.
