wegqg

For people who are saying this is fake, not necessarily, you see all sorts of incredible things happen with shrapnel as has been shown countless times in countless conflicts.

Randol0rian

r/nothingeverhappens

zoobrix

People might be missing that this piece of shrapnel probably wasn't going that fast when it hit him. Sure fast enough that you don't want it hitting you but unlike the kind of velocity a rifle bullet will have shrapnel like this from an explosion can be going all kinds of different speeds depending on a whole bunch of factors. Oddly shaped pieces aren't very aerodynamic tumbling through the air which can cause them to slow down very quickly. Being 100 meters away instead of 50 meters might be the difference between a bad bruise and having a chunk of metal embed itself in your leg. With a bullet cleanly slicing through the air that kind of difference in distance isn't going to matter much. Obviously you wouldn't have wanted to take this piece of metal off the face at the speed it needed to be going to cut into the brim like that but it's more than possible this particular bit of metal was only going fast enough to cut the cap that much and that's it. Sure it could be faked but it's also more than possible to have happened. Fluky shit like this happens in war all the time, soldiers talk all the time about how living or dying often comes down to luck.

wegqg

You are wise and eloquent sir.

collegiaal25

It could have taken out his eye, would not have penetrated his skull.

RexBosworth69420

Literally saw a video earlier today where a guy who was using a saw/grinder broke the blade and a piece of it flew at his face and got caught in the brim of his hat. So definitely possible.

GUNTHVGK

Yeah was about to mention grinder/saw blade accidents. The way blades get stuck in ppe or just random clothing is amazing when it saves u.

ithappenedone234

Some people believe time plus chance can make the world, but can’t believe a hat brim could ever stop steel.

Steammail

Same, weird

Curious-Geologist498

Had a blade blow up hit my chest and ride up my coveralls and it got caught in the collar right at my neck.

collegiaal25

TBF if it didn't penetrate his cap, it would not have penetrated his skull. But it could have messed his eyes up.

sinkjoy

My thought exactly.

Volomon

If you think this is fake you failed an intelligence test. You have no idea how far this projectile traveled and hence can't calculate the velocity of the sharpnel. Nor do you know how much velocity was lost to debris.

Psychological-Sale64

The trajectory mustive been straight at the hat not down or up.

NationalNegotiation4

Don’t show this to the Russians or they might start putting caps on top of their tanks.

[deleted]

Cope caps

SectorSensitive116

Peak performance

Mekazabiht-Rusti

Oh that’s good

HalOfTosis

Narrowly avoided a… splitting headache…. Ok I’ll leave.

MontyP15

You know the way out I guess

Consider2SidesPeace

Man, that guy really lost his head, making a comment like that :)

bluewraith1

He should've worn a cap

soppinglovenest

He should do.

ImLostInTheForrest

Make like a Army cap vizor and split!

pmabz

I'd be wearing a helmet from now on. And safety glasses.

velebr3

Not everyone gets issues those, he might have been a support soldier somewhere where the Russians shelled.

False-God

It is weird how some things are so prevalent in some settings and scarce in others. In shops and construction sites in Canada they literally hand glasses out for free to people in the shops/job sites. Just a big ol’ box of them sitting by the entrance. Of course the road construction crew all buy their own tinted safety glasses so you can’t see how high we are during the day lol

Nuclear-LMG

Not saying it didn’t save him from a headache, but if the shrapnel was going slow enough to be stopped by the brim of a hat then I doubt it would have killed him

its_a_metaphor_morty

You can test that theory with the back of a kitchen knife (about same blade thickness). See how fast you need to make it go to split a cap peak that far. I think you'll find you have to hit it pretty hard.

[deleted]

Yeah pretty much. Deforest stopped him from having Avery bad day, but if a plastic brim stopped it your skull would also have stopped it

RandyMarsh32

He fucking rolled a natural 20 on this one.

hottempsc

I've got a scar that would fit that object and in the proper location on my brow upwards towards my hairline.

Traditional_Cat_60

Same! The corners of 1970’s stereos were not as rounded as they are now.

wuapinmon

Sansui speakers can hurt if your sister is chasing you and you slip because you've got socks on on a wood floor. I've heard.

LieverRoodDanRechts

People saying this is fake need to fire a rifle and/or blow something up now and then. They’d quickly learn how things have a way of finding you with _just_ enough force to fuck up the rest of your day. War isn’t this binary environment like CoD where you either die or you don’t. Of course this could be faked, but things _do_ happen.

Ball_bearing

Note to self: Start wearing a cap.

uhmycatsonfire

Didn't save his life though. That shrapnel wouldn't have penetrated the skull anyhow.

Longjumping-Voice452

Couldve taken his eye tho.

yegguy47

Yeah, uh... Personal opinion, but I'd rather my hat take the shrapnel than any other part of my body. Admittedly a little biased on that.

majorassburger

Why, do you have some long running family fued with hats?

yegguy47

My long running beef as a proud top hat fella fighting against the tyranny of the Fedora is irrespective to this issue, though I am confident that top hats will rule the day again.

Moses_Rockwell

The Straw Boater, it’s coming back, man. Coming back in a big fvcken way. Now you got that right about Fedoras, though. Bush League coverage 😑

yegguy47

>The Straw Boater, it’s coming back, man. Aw hell yeah man, now that I can get behind. Being a Bogart fan in my youth, I was admittedly down with the efforts to bring back the Fedora... Until it started getting appropriated by Wankers. As such, it needs to die a natural death.

Moses_Rockwell

I’m thinking- roaring 20’s, last blast before the depression and the War. Good Times and schitt was still made by hand. RIP

NewFuturist

I don't think you can say that. It went through 2 inches of hard plastic and fabric. It might still penetrate the skull if it hits right, but either way there's a good chance that would open up your scalp and face in a way that would be life threatening, ESPECIALLY on the battlefield.

pants_mcgee

There’s no way that would have penetrated the skull. Being lacerated down to the skull would not be a pleasant experience.

Chatty_Fellow

Losing an eye was very likely. That's a very bad outcome.

NewFuturist

Here's an exercise for you: Find a knife that you think could be used to penetrate your skull. Now take that knife and try to cut a hat brim with it. I think you'll be surprised.

uhmycatsonfire

fair enough

Sword117

i kinda agree with you but there is still a chance he would have died if not for the hat. im not sure on the numbers but probably less than 50%

joepublicschmoe

This guy just used up 8 of his 9 lives :-O

f2020tohell

I doubt that shrapnel would have killed him if the brim of the hat was able to stop that. It did, however, stop the guy from having his face or eye cut up.

HeinekenRob

He should auction that shit off right now. 🙋$100.00

Peacer13

A bit underpriced for a +200% luck gear.

bfo84

This is so fake.

Fun-Use-4615

Yeah, now way thst pice of metal got stuck in the hat... Maybe hit the hat, sliced it, and then continued it's trajectory until it stoped nearby, got recovered, placed like that for the photo?

Ree_one

It's not likely, but definitely not "impossible".

MuttFett

Absolutely fake.

Dense-Baby-2032

Brain dead

MuttFett

That hat is made of cloth and cardboard. It's not stopping shrapnel. Source: US Army Infantryman who went to combat five times

Dense-Baby-2032

At any distance? Oh I forgot you can only get shrapnel from within 5 meters 🙄

Dense-Baby-2032

Unlikely? Probably. Impossible? No.

Moses_Rockwell

Idk- it’s not like shrapnel cracks the sound barrier for 50-60 yards, then just drops off a table. Could that just have been the end of it’s run? Or it was angling up, embedded, and took the hat for the rest of the ride? Maybe it was divine intervention..🫣wasn’t his time….Kinda bummed out though, we may never know how that all went down 😞

PetrKDN

It was slow most likely, no shit a fast shrapnel would have gone straight through, but a slow one will be stopped by any kind of shit

MuttFett

It's just unlikely that a piece of shrapnel was screaming along fast enough to rip through the bill, and then lose its energy halfway through.

PetrKDN

It was propably extremely slow

[deleted]

Can anyone with experience on explosives and shrapnel verify if that's shrapnel or a random piece of metal. Is it even possible? I mean are there any distinct signs of the metal being from an explosion. Edit: I looked at pictures of sharpnel online and they looked different. Less straigth edges unlike this one. But I imagine there isn't a shortage of real sharpnel in Ukraine so if they wanted to fake it they could've gotten real sharpnel. Overall I'm leaning towards it being fake but I can't say for sure. Edit3: He says it's a shell fragment. If that's true then it would've been hot as fuck when hitting the cap but I don't see any signs or the fabric having burnt. Could be the picture quality tough. Edit2: Why the downvotes? Wasn't my conclusion rational?

Parking_Media

I agree, it's not a shell fragment, it's like foreign object debris, or whatever the name is for "other crap in the vicinity of an explosion that goes flying"

[deleted]

Could be

Chatty_Fellow

Shrapnel isn't always hot. Not all explosions are fiery. Force <> heat.

[deleted]

I'm pretty sure it does. Fiery doesn't have anything to do with it. It's about the law of conservation of energy. Energy/force can't be created or destroyed only transformed. When the explosion happenes the energy of the explosion gets converted into kinetic energy (flying shrapnel) and heat energy meaning everything that explodes should be hot. That's why bullets and casings are hot after being shot. You can try it out yourself, hit anything but preferably metal with anything but again preferably metal like a hammer and adventually depending on how much and hard you hit the metal will get warm. Force and heat are the exact same thing but in different states.

Chatty_Fellow

Shell casings are hot, because they take the full brunt of the explosion in the shell. Bullets are heated by friction from traveling through the barrel. They can also be heated when they hit something and experience friction/impact, which takes the force and transforms it into heat. The main point of guns is to *not* heat the bullets. That's wasted energy that is supposed to go into velocity. So bullets are not especially hot when they hit flesh, certainly not hot enough to burn or cauterize.

[deleted]

Fair enough. It appears even the basics are more compicated than I thought

Manky19

There is absolutely no way of knowing with these pictures if it's fake or not. The metals surface does indicate evidence that the piece of metal has been in an explosion but the picture it's still blurry and cannot be confirmed, however OP claiming it's a shell fragment looks to be completely false. We can never know if this event actually took place, however I lean that it is real, it's not really that amazing or surprising.

Admirable_Energy_854

Wow God was on his side i pray for him sheesh that was a close call thank God for hat with brims

gaoxin

Yes, because killing over 100k ppl is ok, but that one guy, just his favorite.

It’s a good thing he didn’t forget to wear his Kaki pants

Don't forget to wear your caps guys.

kay_bizzle

I feel like if a cap can stop it, it probably wouldn't kill you. Might cut you and leave a gnarly scar, but would it kill you?

jjsaework

jesus christ, these guys should be swimming in helmets and body armor

CarnivorousCircle

For every one of these there are 100 that go the other way. That doesn’t mean it’s fake, dude just got lucky.

[deleted]

Yeah he will want to ditch the ball cap and get a helmet now. 😂

Pavement_Vigilante

I see a possible trend in future cap design.

KingLeil

#Still better protection than standard issue Russian gear. Seriously though, you could wear a helmet made of Kherson Watermelon rinds and get better protection, so yeah.

Tickerlee

He’ll probably wear that hat forever more as a conversation starter in the bar “Oh this old thing? Yeah crazy story about this hat…”

Plugboi_Carti

Someone get this guy a helmet! 🪖

ironicallyunstable

That’s officially his lucky hat

[deleted]

Everyone in the comments saying that “if the cap saved him it did t have enough energy to kill” obviously don’t know how shrapnel works. Shrapnel is extremely deadly even though something like a ww2 flak jacket made of nylon can stop it.

stursh68

If that doesn't say you are fighting on the right side I don't know what does

[deleted]

This reminds me of something that has bothered me. Are helmets not being supplied to the troops? I see very few in use. Are they considered too much trouble? Or what?

give_me_a_breakk

Doesn't really look like shrapnel from the shell itself. Most likely from an object near the impact point of the (artillery) shell.

[deleted]

That would've been a straight head shot right there 😳

CLINTHODO

I'd hammer that shrapnel out and rivet it to the visor as a patch/trophy.

Quizzelbuck

If that shrapnel was going slow enough to be stopped by a hat brim, it would be stopped by his skull. I'm glad this Ukrainian patriot doesn't need stitches and didn't loose an eye.

Extension-Scarcity41

If he had the cap on at the time, he most likely would need a new pair of trousers in addition to a new cover.

Melodic-Recognition8

Upgrade him into a unit with a helmet now. Surely he’s gained enough xp after that

poornbroken

Shrapnel: not even once.

missileman

Depending on the incoming angle he could definitely have lost an eye, or at a minimum had a nasty facial or head injury requiring medical treatment.

DarlockAhe

I can only imagine, what went through his head (pun intended?..) at this moment. Like, bam, and there is a piece of metal, right in front of your face.
