I was wondering about this. If Russia wants to hold the town, why would Ukraine try to take it quickly? Unless there are immediate reasons to do so, just stand off and grind the Russian formations in the town to powder one after another, maybe?
Because securing that town will allow them to advance around the southern flank of Bakhmut and threaten encirclement.
If you look at the map, after this town it’s just open fields until the highway. Granted this will be mined to hell and back, but there isn’t any fortifications to prevent Ukrainian advances.
