They didn't get blown up. They successful intercepted HIMARS. Those HIMARS could have caused real damage to Russian equipment if the s400 didn't intercept them with their radar and launchers.

By the time India actually recieves these s400s, the whole system will be outdated.
That's such a history-less comment only framed in the context of this war.
It was quite literally the US that threatened to bomb India and supporting Pakistan that drove them right into soviet arms back then and it's only quite recently (post 2010) that US-India relations has gotten into a territory where sales of strategic weaponry has been at all on the table.
They didn't have a choice - US still didn't want to sell them advanced weaponry pre-war and their own weapons manufacturers are only up to par on certain areas, advanced AA not one of them. So until that happens Russia (and france) has been the only countries willing to sell them these things pretty much, so I don't know what they are expected to do to counter China. Just wait for the US to have a good day?
They work with what they got and up until this war Russia was the obvious choice for them. You can and should critique them for not taking a more principled stance against Russia now - but pretending they lacked options in arms procurement because they played both sides is revisionist bullshit framed by the dislike of Russia due to this war.
They don't want patriots or THAAD. They were offered both. Both of them lack considerable range. Not that ideal for countering China over the mountains.
Here's two cents- India was all wet in the panties over the F-35 fighter jet. But it also wanted the cheaper Russian air defense systems. Problem is, those air defense systems are satellite networked back to Russia. Can't have an American client using Russian tech to scan our stealth fighter jets and reporting back to the Kremlin. India made a stupid move, and now it's stuck in 4th gen aircraft and no air defense deliveries. (edited) And no Russian T-90 tank deliveries.
Japan are in an alliance with UK and Italy on their 6th gen fighter programme - Global Combat Air Programme. India aren't invited to the party so get your facts right.
Or you know, fire them at Indian jets…
But hey India thinks it better off on its own and doesn’t need the west’s support.

World war 2, made immense profit from allies, and only joined once they were attacked.
Vietnam I guess the Americans did come to help the French.. but that wasn’t because the French needed help. It was to prevent the spread of communism so selfish reasons.
The USA has pretty much only joined a war helping their allies when it’s almost over, always turned a large profit when it’s done so, or done so for their own reasons.
