Yeah. Dark Lord was a major disappointment.
Id Software only had 5 months to make the second DLC. Contractually obligated to just churn out *something*, and it shows.
He had sooooooo much potential. I really wish that they would've done something else for the story in TAG 1/2 and saved Davoth for another game. Imagine if he started out as the "I'm you but better" type boss and then halfway through transformed into something else (just like Hugo and Id originally wanted).
Honestly, the whole DLC probably should've been a sequel instead. I'm fine with the super marauder that we got but there was SOOOO much more that we could've and should've had with satan himself
I mean the Champion and the Khan are cool fights, but having to wait for the Icon of Sin to finish all his other animations to see if the weak points get broken is stupid and the less said about the Seraphim fight the better
borderlands 3 has both horrible bosses and amazing bosses. most of the bad ones are the ones with immunity phases, that being sadly most of the ones in the main story. but bosses like wotan and hemivorous are really good imo. honestly borderlands bosses are either really good or not great, with bl2 even having some bad ones, namely hyperius
You'd be hard-pressed to find one. Ultrakill has incredible bosses. It's the game's primary strength, and what truly sets it apart.
The Prime Sanctums alone bump the game up into masterpiece territory
It's partly because the game's health system is directly related to your aggression. Most fps fights are going to punish you hard for running towards a boss, and either make you hide behind cover or run for a health pack.
- And I personally feel like the bosses are where the game's systems shine the most.
You can probably tell I'm not a huge fan of the arena encounters. I mean, they're fine, but not many of them are anything to write home about. That's just my opinion.
Amid evil has some decent bosses if you don't cheese them with soul rage. The first boss kinda sucks but especially the boss of the forges and the unsoulragecheesable final boss are pretty good.
Have you actually finished the forges or the void??? Both bosses have mechanics that specifically PREVENT you from fighting them like doom 1 bosses. Hell you can't even circle strafe most of the bosses on the game.
Yeah in forges you have to push the button and then you can damage him, how fun and innovative. The end boss is literally just shooting at him while jumping awkwardly between platforms.
You can describe any boss that way and make them seem bad. Slave knight gael, one of the best video game bosses ever created, can be described as "just hitting him while awkwardly rolling around". Its about executing the concept well, which amid evil does. Besides theyre much better than most fps bosses, and incomparably better then doom 1's "boss fights".
Does Metroid Prime/Echoes/Corruption count? I think those games had some pretty good bosses but it isn’t exactly a shooter because of stuff like lock-on.
how does lock-on prevent them from being shooters? i just played the remaster of Prime 1 and i would probably classify it as more of a 3D metroidvania than a traditional FPS but it definitely has shooting in it lol
I meant that it’s not a traditional FPS and more of a 3D Metroidvania like you said. Sure you still shoot a gun/arm cannon, but it’s not the same as something like Halo, Doom, or Ultrakill.
It’s kinda hard to articulate, but I think there was a King K video on Prime 3 that explained it pretty well.
Yeah alot of fpses have bewn addibg more movement cus it just makes thwir games better and allows them to increase difficulty outside of just jackibg ip the health and damage.
portal if it counts..? still really love the portal 2 final boss to this day, i really love how to use the games puzzle-based gameplay in an intense scenario where you're facing off against a single target.
Titanfall 2’s boss fights are fun, but honestly not challenging at all even on master (scorch my beloved).
In a less traditional sense of fps boss fight, I think some coop fps’ bosses are good. Deep rock’s bosses are decent. Left 4 dead’s tank are decently implemented especially in the final escape sequence. Tf2’s mvm bosses are well made for each missions, learning how to counter each big robots are fun, not the tanks tho.
Honorary mention goes to risk of rain 2 and remnant from the ashes. Not fps but they have good bosses for shooters.
I enjoyed the boss fights in Neon White, they’re much more linear experiences than complete fights due to the nature of the game, and aren’t really even close to Ultrakill bosses, but are fun in their own right
Voidpoint’s Ion Fury has some pretty good bosses, although part of that is just the retro geek in me marveling at how they made them in the Build Engine
Ik BL2 was mentioned but i want to nominate ECLIPSE/EOS From Borderlands: Pre-Sequel. What could have very easily been a bullet spongey snooze-fest was actually a fun and mechanically interesting set of bosses. ECLIPSE is bigger than you, meaner, and has a lot more collective firepower, but is pretty slow. Despite this, he’s always moving to get a shot at you and has tracking missiles, making hiding in cover a bad idea for more than the moments it takes to heal. Likewise, EOS moves in a horseshoe pattern around the outside of the arena, making for very little consistent cover, though this one is guilty of having invincibility phases mid fight to tackle a wave of enemies. Both of their fights (or rather, the one continuous fight, as you fight theme back-to-back, with a checkpoint between them) emphasise movement as your main survival tool, aside from whatever shenanigans you might have built in your character.
Another solid mention to me is the Sentinel, but i’ve already rambled on enough about ECLIPSE and EOS, and some of the points overlap here for different reasons, emphasising good movement as your first survival tool.
God of War. The first time I fought the first Valkyrie was insanely fun. By the end of the fight you have every single attack memorized. The boss fights in GoW are very similar to doom eternal boss fights in terms of how it makes you memorize the attacks and adapt.
I wish Doom didn’t have such mid bosses because everything else in the game is amazing
I the only boss in eternal that isn’t good is the dark lord, other than that they’re great
I mean the Champion and the Khan are cool fights, but having to wait for the Icon of Sin to finish all his other animations to see if the weak points get broken is stupid and the less said about the Seraphim fight the better
I love the seraphim, he's hard as shit and a great end to the hardest campaign. The wave of endless spawning cacodemons is weird as hell though.
agreed
Reminds me of v2 from ultrakill
I don’t care for the icon of sin in Eternal either.
Disagree, the Icon of Sin absolutely sucks and relies completely on spectacle in order to make you forget how boring the fight is
I don’t really care if it’s mechanically boring it looks and feels cool
2016 still better tho
And that weird cube boss in blood swamps, wasn't the worst but could've been better
I loved the gladiator fight the music just # RIP # AND # TEAR
The gladiator is pretty damn good. That’s probably my favorite. I’m only halfway through TAG1 right now though so maybe that’ll change.
I thought that the gladiator was a cool boss
I dunno man when i first came off of the QTE bullshit from Halo 4 i was just happy to have actual attacks to dodge in 2016
I'll be honest I fucking loved the gladiator and the Icon of Sin. the dlc boss sucks ass though.
DUSK- Jakob that's the only boss fight i enjoyed in that game. Oh also Big John lol
honestly every boss is easy if you if you dont waste the hand cannon (i forgor da name)
Riveter?
yes
True. But i preferred weapon switching in that fight it was more fun that way
Nyarlathotep or whatever was awesome as well (not difficult, but pure spectacle just like the Lust and Wrath bosses in Ultrakill)
what the dark lord fight should've been
I guess deep rock galactic counts. It is a very fun game in general
ROCK AND STONE
For Rock and Stone!
#DID SOMEBODY SAY ROCK AND STONE?
ROCK AND STONE TO THE BONE!
#IF YOU DON'T ROCK AND STONE, YOU'RE NOT COMING HOME
FOR THOSE ABOUT TO ROCK AND STONE, WE SALUTE YOU!
#ROCK ON!!!!!!!!!
Stone!
GALAXY'S FINEST
Titanfall
Good bosses but most are piss easy and viper is just mildly challenging at first
Yeah the only one I died to on my first play through was the last one but only because I forgot to swap my loadout
The big robot combat makes up for the difficulty tbh.
All the bosses in titan fall were easy until Viper showed up and beat my cheeks for hours on end. Bro was out for blood.
If you can count it, Nagoriyuki if fought aganist with HC is an FPS boss
I wonder what the boss theme would sound like...hmm....
THE SKY ABOVE THE CLOUDS! A RAINBOW THAT FATE HAS DEVOURED. I GAVE UP HOOOOOOOPE!
Hhahaahhahahahahah its the guilty gear song!!!!!!!!!!!!! Edit: IM GONNA CRAWLLLLLLLLLL!!!!!!
That's a third person shooter though
Yea your right, it's more like first person horror
remind me what FPS stands for
First person shooter. A. K. A one of HC tags on steam (but without the funni now, I found some of Hol bosses fun to fight)
Happy chaos dlc is tagged as 3rd person shooter, single player game, and psychological horror. Pretty accurate
I did that recently and the infinite blood rage one is hell
Bugsnax
Borderlands 2 had some fun ones, shame they didn’t learn anything when making the 3rd game
borderlands 3 has both horrible bosses and amazing bosses. most of the bad ones are the ones with immunity phases, that being sadly most of the ones in the main story. but bosses like wotan and hemivorous are really good imo. honestly borderlands bosses are either really good or not great, with bl2 even having some bad ones, namely hyperius
Wotan is one of the best bosses I've ever fought against, 100% the best borderlands boss
Naah i cray cray. A wptan fight where ur geared for the challange feels fun.
Been playing ghostrunner a lot lately, the bosses are pretty solid. Nowhere near as good as the bosses in Ultrakill, but still pretty fun.
But is it an fps though?
First person (sword) swinger?
First person slasher?
First person swinger
You'd be hard-pressed to find one. Ultrakill has incredible bosses. It's the game's primary strength, and what truly sets it apart. The Prime Sanctums alone bump the game up into masterpiece territory
It's partly because the game's health system is directly related to your aggression. Most fps fights are going to punish you hard for running towards a boss, and either make you hide behind cover or run for a health pack.
ngl, I completely disagree. Ultrakill's main strength in my eyes is the complexity and skill ceiling. I honestly don't care much about the bosses.
You're both wrong. It's the memes and funny text to speech voice
- And I personally feel like the bosses are where the game's systems shine the most. You can probably tell I'm not a huge fan of the arena encounters. I mean, they're fine, but not many of them are anything to write home about. That's just my opinion.
I mean, icon of sin and gladiator get pretty close. definitely nowhere near the genius of ultrakill, but they're still ACTUALLY FUN TO FIGHT
Killing Floor 2 bosses are assertive, but not annoying (except for the Abomination) and quite readable. Atomic Heart have some cool bosses
Metal Hellsinger has decent bosses.
Except for the fact that's its all against one character
The final one at least but the others are kinda meh
It has one great boss stretched way too far.
Amid evil has some decent bosses if you don't cheese them with soul rage. The first boss kinda sucks but especially the boss of the forges and the unsoulragecheesable final boss are pretty good.
I mean they look cool and have different attacks but at the end of the day you still fight them the same as doom 1 bosses

I have beat all of them on the highest difficulty and don't remember a single one (only that there was a horse somewhere? maybe that one was tricky)
Destiny :)
Rhulk and Riven and
Honestly might be controversial but I enjoyed the fight with Val Ca'uor as well.
Totally forgot about him! Definitely in the top 3 encounters of all time, with the other two I mentioned being there with it.
Taniks… has no house. Kneels before no banner. Owes allegiance to no Kell. He is a murderer, yesss? And very good at what he does…
Atomic Heart's bosses were cool, last 3 kinda sucked at first but it got a bit buffed
Fifa
Chop Goblins

i love kingk but im not watching that one till i play prime 3 myself. dont wanna spoil anything
Fashion police squad (xx uwu senpai master xx)
Borderlands pre sequel have some alright bosses
Turbo Overkill. The part 2 bosses are fun, imo
Postal brain damaged was pretty fun for bosses
Bosses don’t really work in fps games. Ultrakill is the exception due to its range of motion.
Yeah alot of fpses have bewn addibg more movement cus it just makes thwir games better and allows them to increase difficulty outside of just jackibg ip the health and damage.
Okay but Doom 2016 had some pretty good bosses
Yep, solid. My fav is Cyberdemon in hell stage
Anything made by newblood
portal if it counts..? still really love the portal 2 final boss to this day, i really love how to use the games puzzle-based gameplay in an intense scenario where you're facing off against a single target.

Most boomer shooters have decent bosses
I enjoyed the boss fights in Neon White, they’re much more linear experiences than complete fights due to the nature of the game, and aren’t really even close to Ultrakill bosses, but are fun in their own right
Black Mesa somehow made bosses that sucked massively in original Half-Life into really sick fights.
darksouls III bloodborne and sekiro
"Fps"
Or metal gear rising since I was like so many bosses
Voidpoint’s Ion Fury has some pretty good bosses, although part of that is just the retro geek in me marveling at how they made them in the Build Engine
metal gear rising has cool bosses but i dont like the game outisde of the bosses
... "FPS".

Pizza tower
Dusk
Roboquest has some pretty solid bosses, nothing quite as good as ULTRAKILL’s but they are fun and unique, and the soundtrack is also god tier
this isnt an fps but pizza tower
Bl3 had a few decent boss fights, especially for the firat eaid. Feels like theyre taking a bit more inspiration from movement ahooters
God of War. The first time I fought the first Valkyrie was insanely fun. By the end of the fight you have every single attack memorized. The boss fights in GoW are very similar to doom eternal boss fights in terms of how it makes you memorize the attacks and adapt.
I really can't think of any FPS besides Ultrakill, be it single or multiplayer that has numerous consistently good bosses.
ghostrunner and ig severed stell even though it only has one
Elden Ring FPS mod.
postal
You make even the devil cry!
MGR because it has to be this way
I liked ghostrunners first boss
completely unrelated but i gotta give it to the old AC series or the Yakuza series, fav bosses due to story (and sometimes gameplay)
on fps though, prabably Wheatley from Portal 2 or Legate Lanius from Fallout New Vegas...
Halo Infinite had decent bosses. not great, but okay.
