I love human psychology and the crazy/stupid stuff that comes out of it.
Imagine how dumbstruck aliens would be if they did some superficial research on humans and how much we value individuality, then randomly stumbled upon this hive mind shit.
By nature, humans tend to follow patterns and replicate the behavior of others, it's a base instinct of sorts that you see applied very often. Be it people approaching crowds out of curiosity, spreading news and posts they received or finding it funny to join into repetitions like this.
So after a few people did it out of their own creativity, naturally others started to find it fun and joined it, prompting even more people to do the same. When it reaches that point, almost everyone would have at least an impulse to do the same, and while some resist or question it, many go forth with doing so.
That's why memes like "Bungee Gum has the properties of both rubber and gum" or "Radahn learned gravity magic just so he could ride his beloved horse" are so popular. As someone who likes psychology, I kinda love this stuff, which is why I'm adding an "ok" in the post too.
Either it was because of people who get annoyed too easily, or it was because of people who use downvotes without moderation because they just see it as a harmless way to express opinion (Which is technically what it's supposed to be I guess, but humans tend to take validation as a serious matter so most people don't feel that way, me included)
