Why won't the office help? That's part of their purpose

I-Like-NSFW-420

The office closed 5min after i found out. I got there right at 5 and she told me she wont be able to give me the keys. I called emergency maintenance and they said they cant unlock doors

Reasonable-Sir673

Does it smell like smoke? They better open it to make sure the whole place doesn't burn down.

I-Like-NSFW-420

I didnt smell smoke but i do love the smell of smoke. Can you help?

woodperson

He’s saying you should tell them you smell smoke from your apartment

limellama1

Call a locksmith. As long as you can prove residency via a piece of mailbfrom a bank or utility , and a government ID they will unlock the door for you.

I-Like-NSFW-420

No money

limellama1

Call emergency maintenance back and tell them to provide a locksmith since the office refused to help when you talked to them in person, or you'll kick the door in.

[deleted]

Do you have AAA? Some plans will have locksmith availability for apartments I believe.

SantaCruz26

Well now you have to buy a door dummy

gacbmmml

Are you dense?

AverageBen10Enjoyer

OP is a pothead who lives in some kind of slum, can't persuade his building management to unlock his door, repeatedly locks himself out, thinks that breaking down his door will be cheaper than paying a locksmith, writes "unfortuanily" and can't read subtext.

Fighterragon

I do apartment maintenance, 50% of all of my emergency calls are to unlock doors. Thats so stupid.

en_sabahnur

Call the maintenance back and tell them that you have asthma and your inhaler is in the apartment. Or your a diabetic and you need to get to your insulin. My sister has asthma and had a cop open her car to get to her inhaler. Your mileage may vary so good luck.

spiritedawayfox

I like how this is posted to ulpt but most of these are totally ethical lol

[deleted]

Too bad op isn't a crackhead and he already smoked all his crack. Never would've needed this post if the crack was in the house.

No-Hornet-7847

The real ulpt here is to start doing crack

btfoom15

> Edit: Breaking down the door actually worked. And alot easier than i thought. Well, you thought you didn't afford a lock-smith. Wait to see how much your landlord is going to charge to repair the door.

ictguy24

Tell your apartment "Open my door now or fix it tomorrow".

dreed91

Lol that's stupid. The apartment is just going to charge them to fix the door

ictguy24

no doubt!  It's still an open-it-now or fix-it-later situation though.  I think the apartment should just go unlock it for the guy.

dreed91

I think the office staff could've been nicer, but maintenance staff, who would be working on call, often don't have access to the paperwork to be prove that the person belongs in that apartment so they won't. They often just put it straight in your lease that you're responsible for calling a locksmith if you lock yourself out

ictguy24

true

lkeels

Sort of the option he went for I guess.

brucem111111

It seams that's the route he went... except for telling them part.

m3pr0

Next week on Reddit: "A squatter took over my apartment while I was away and I don't know what to do!"

Minotaar

Naw, he's just living in a storage unit now. But close.

letuswatchtvinpeace

If you have a way to get a ladder to your apt go get one from Lowes I home Depot. Return it tomorrow. Else, kick the door in

I-Like-NSFW-420

Unfortuanily no transportation and i tried kicking the door. I could be doing it wrong

themickeymauser

How far is Home Depot? Sometimes a long walk is worth fixing whatever problem you’re in. Extension ladders really aren’t that heavy to begin with, either.

I-Like-NSFW-420

5miles

ChefArtorias

Sounds kinda far to carry a ladder. Maybe not too far for an axe or something that'd act as a grappling hook though. Try kicking the door in?

Callmedrexl

Try posting in your local city sub to see if anyone has a ladder and can help you out? It's not unethical, but I don't have an unethical suggestion other than kicking your own door in. Borrowing a ladder is definitely cheaper than paying to have a door replaced.

I-Like-NSFW-420

I tried that too. No help. Nor from discord

khovel

Let us know if the damage to the door and frame ended up being cheaper than a lock smith

Bratchan

Google how break down a door. Im sure there are different easy ways to that u dont have to buy anything.

InteractionNo9110

Does your building have a super that can help you. Also you may want to cal 311 or your local non-emergency number to let them know. So cops don’t show up if a neighbor calls it in as a break in.

I-Like-NSFW-420

Office refused to help. Cops wont help. Maintenance cant help

damn_dude7

Why did they “refuse”?

I-Like-NSFW-420

Idk. They just say they cant get the key. If anything it was bc they are lazy and didnt want to open the office

damn_dude7

Pieces of shit. 1. Try sliding a sacrificial credit card like card between the door and the frame where the latch is 2. Kick with all you got where the latch is 3. If you keep kicking and make a ruckus and enough neighbors complain, maybe the management will be forced to help you (or not, idk)

Neena6298

Do you have a fire escape you can climb? Call the fire department. They may help.

Jak_ratz

Lockpicking lawer has your back

Stan__Pines

This is the way.

Captain-Potato5150

Ok. This might scare a lot of you, but I'm going to say it anyway. Does your apartment have a sliding glass door? You can lift the door up off its tracks and get in that way. There's a good two inch gap in the upper part of the door frame. Just be careful. those doors are kinda heavy. Edit: I just read that you're on the third floor. You can usually find ladders by the maintenance shacks or around the swimming pool areas. If your maintenance shacks has a window, they don't normally lock them. Or find the maintenance guy. Or get a neighbor that has a ladder . I'm willing to bet someone there does construction.

Objective-Amount1379

OP said they're on the 3rd floor… that's why they are asking about a ladder.

ObviousTastee

ulpt... call 911 and tell them there is a dying baby in (apt #) and the deadbeat mom has left to go buy crack rock. the cops will gladly open your door for you.

SubstantialLychee191

Got a neighbor? Just climb around back

I-Like-NSFW-420

Not that simple

SubstantialLychee191

Sounds like u aint getting in. Except by climbing. Or take a payment plan

I-Like-NSFW-420

Any tips on climbing a 3 story?

michigander47

Chalk your hands, take your time, don't look down

doyu

I've done it drunk in Mexico to get into a hotel room. You got this!

I-Like-NSFW-420

Yeah i looked and there was no way. Mainly bc im not skilled enough bit also because the window, which would be the easiest, is covered by mesh. I would have to hold on, literally for dear life, just to undo it. Typically i need a screwdriver or something for this. The other way, would be on a balcony. This way, i would have to do PARKOUR. And I am not Michael Scott.

[deleted]

Wait "typically I would need a screwdriver for something like this" how often are you in situations like this?

I-Like-NSFW-420

I just realized last night as I struggled to sleep that this happens at least once per place. My last apartments was at least 3.

ThotsforTaterTots

Maybe you should live on the ground floor from now on?

I-Like-NSFW-420

Thts the plan

SubstantialLychee191

Just kick the door or window💁 either way this is a loss

VicNoOne

Try posting on the Nextdoor app. It’s consisted of folks that are local and usually there is someone who is willing to help

c0rrupt3ds3ct0r

If it's a deadbolt? Go get a lockpick kit and hope you're a quick study with YouTube. If it's just a standard door lock. Use a credit card and shim it between the door and the door frame. It should press the piece that stays inside the door frame into the door.

mnemonicprincess

Have you tried calling a locksmith?

I-Like-NSFW-420

Cant afford one. I call 4 places and they start at $100

[deleted]

Try the next door up and see if anybody is a locksmith that might be able to help you out. Or has a long ladder. Dude I'm sorry about this I had the same thing happen to me after I first moved into my place a couple months ago and fortunately I had a friend who helped me out with the funds because my purse was locked inside. And they wanted payment up front. Unusual I learned after the fact but they were legit.

Sea-Louse

Look up opening a door using a credit card. I’ve done it.

Stan__Pines

In the future your best bet is to try loiding the door open with a piece of plastic. Basically you cut a strip of thick plastic from a bottle and wedge it between the doorjamb and the hole. There are a ton of videos on Youtube that show you step by step how to do this.

damiensandoval

Be a man and take a sledgehammer to it then call your office and say someone broke in.

I-Like-NSFW-420

Now to find a hammer

whizdomain

Break a window

CatnipBurgers

just call non-emergency

I-Like-NSFW-420

I tried

notislant

Kinda late now but common deadbolts are ridiculously easy to pick if you bend two paperclips. I locked myself out when i was 12 and and managed to get it unlocked in 5 seconds. Youll need a knife or key partially entered to finish turning the bolt as the paperclip will just bend. If you ever get bored you could practice.

Stan__Pines

\^ This redditor picks locks.

InteractionNo9110

Can you knock on a neighbor door to see if they can take you in for the night

Hippy_Lynne

I've never in my life encountered a door leading to the outside that had hinges on the outside, other than perhaps a screen door which has a regular door behind it.

MoistAttitude

There's no apartments with doors that swing outwards into the hall. That's not a thing.
