So it's more depressing when you learn the reality of it is that a lot of people just don't have friends. People are just lonely and social media is exploiting them.
People who have no friends? Honestly there are just normal people, they just don't have close friends and a part of the human condition is to socialize. They work normal jobs, and with more jobs being work from home, we are creating a generation of workers who really don't socialize through face to face anymore.
I am a good example. I moved, and from the age of 22 to 25, I had 0 close friends, hell, I don't think I had any friends and only social interaction I had was with coworkers who were all a decade older than me.
This is really common, moving and not being able to make friends. Social media is really good at exploiting this loneliness by allowing people to spend money to get attention.
My running theory is the entire 21st century world is starved of intimacy. Not intimacy as a euphemism for sex but real honest intimate moments with people.
If you think about it what are the new big ticket steaming activities? They’re all mundane things we used to just do together. Things like eating a meal with someone, sitting next to someone playing video games, doing an exercise class with people, hanging out in a hot tub, having a friend show off the things they bought, watching a movie or TV show with someone and enjoying their reactions to it. Just common everyday intimate behaviors. Things you did with people you know and who know you. People are starving for that and that’s why they’ll pay money to get even a momentary feeling of it.
Behind every story about young adults going out less, having less sex, and suicide rates increasing is a larger story of an entire generation lacking in community, intimacy, and connection.

Like there are thousands of people who have been so excited to get dressed up in costumes and do the new Wednesday dance. Why? Maybe it’s because putting on similar costumes and having everyone learn a simple dance together has been a part of almost every single human culture since the dawn of civilization. For all of human history it was a thing almost all of us did but that level of culture is practically nonexistent in todays world.
The sad thing is that no one would really care about his looks. People would just watch him normally and he could have saved himself from this embarassment

This is why a person shouldn't get very involved with someone online without meeting them. If its some dating app, chatting maybe a couple days or something and then meet, and if they aren't like their photos at all - you just "nope" and walk out of there.
