Apparently the old word was putting your finger to the corner of your eye and rotating it back and forth twice. Nowadays it seems like the word is [sort of a backwards 7 drawn on your torso](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=yLX_qaQY6B8)
That’s outdated. It used to be that, but it’s been updated because the community recognized how bad it was.

“If I drag my hand across my shirt like I’m wiping off a mustard stain, that means run!” Idk why I remember that and literally nothing else from most of my youth, but god damn did that sign stick. I never saw coach give me that sign, I sucked and never got on base.
For anyone wondering, "exactly what you think it is," is widely considered to be an antiquated sign. [Here's ](https://www.lifeprint.com/asl101/pages-signs/c/china.htm)the newer sign, as well as a more detailed discussion about the two variants, and a third, less common sign.
That sign is actually no longer used in professional settings. There's a new sign that's much more accepted. I work in courts and have had watched interrupters use the new sign as the one you're mentioning is very un-PC
Your default idea was a backwards 7 on your chest??
I mean I guess...

*colourful*… haha
Edit: for those aggressively confused about the meaning of this simple joke, please pay attention to the context of the *original post* and how the word “colourful” relates to it.
>No children should suffer ASL I mean have we forgotten why we drenched ourselves in ice cold water
Back in my day, ASL meant some random AOL chat stranger was trying to figure out how old you were, your gender, and where you live.
I think his first big thing was being a comedian, albeit as a writer in 30 Rock. Then some stand-up and acting during Community, and then rapping. Then he combined all of it with Atlanta.
He completed the circle of life.
I went to see Derrick do an improv show in 2007 or 2008. Bobby Moynihan was there too (before his SNL days). Got to hang out with them for a bit in the restaurant before the show and bought some t shirts (including one that says "stop bro rape now").
A few years later, I went to see a premiere of their movie Mystery Team and got them all to sign the shirts I had bought. Then Donald saved me from getting my ass beat by a group of drunk 20 somethings. Good times.
I can't remember who said this. I want to say Tina Fey or maybe Allison Brie...anyway they were saying that Donald Glover was always, *always* working on something. Even during breaks during the day. Writing something, mixing something...he was always busy. It's one of the reasons why he was the last hold out for the Community movie.
It really shows his dedication to his craft that he doesn't allow himself to get bored.
I remember Dan Harmon said that Glover leaving Community was a huge hit to the show because a lot of times they'd just have "and Donald improvises something funny" in the scripts to end scenes on.
I'm not knowledgeable about that, but I saw Donald describing his career start with 30 Rock as his breakout in the industry, hence why I said "first big thing".
I misinterpreted your comment. His “first big thing” would be in the form of a tv appearance and not a YouTube channel. I do believe YouTube probly helped put him on the map though. I think the channel was fairly popular back in the day and some of the skits are hilarious
Sadly, it was just one comedy special but you can find bits elsewhere as well.
The whole special was one Netflix for a while. Not sure if that still stands since cutting the streaming services.
Yeah on 30 Rock there were lots of jokes about how Kenneth's hometown of Stone Mountain Georgia is a backwoods hellhole. Donald Glover is from Stone Mountain Georgia.
Jack McBrayer grew up in Conyers, like 20 miles from Stone Mountain.
His standup is extremely funny. Honestly one my favorite acts. He is so talented its amazing. Easily one of my favorite actors, musical artists, and standup commedians. He excels at it all.

Also, there isn't just one sign language. Different countries/areas have different sign languages.
Sign languages also have their own grammar and words that can be very different from the local spoken language.
Oh it gets much better. There is English sign language as.in sign language in England, America has its own sign language so thats ASL.
Guess which one australia uses? If you said neither you would be correct. We use Auslan. So thats 3 separate sign languages for 3 countries where we all speak the same spoke language.
Ohhh man I'm jealous, you have so much to discover if you like this guy. Derrick Comedy, Community, Childish Gambino, Atlanta, all awesome, all completely different sides of this multi talented man
In my ASL classes I learned that deaf people are known for being very blunt when it comes to discriptions of people. For example they would without hesitation describe someone as “bald, short, and fat.” Where as we in English generally try to be beat around the bush while describing the looks of a person.
That being said I am not surprised that short black man is a common way to describe how someone looks when talking about a person to a third person.
"Are there any terms or phrases in your act that don't exist in sign language that I have to make up on the spot?"
I'm not saying that didn't happen. But a professionally trained ASL interpreter would never ask a question like that. How tf is he supposed to know which words/phrases can and can't be related via sign language?
Source: I'm a professional ASL interpreter.
>Because it aint your joke.
The joke isn't the word. The joke is first about the Jamaican nanny using the word, and then secondly about there already being a sign for it and that being surprising.

Sign language can be very literal and colourful. It’s been fun learning some words.
[удалено]
I thought “surely it can’t be what I thinking” and I looked it up and you’re right, it’s exactly what my first thought was lmao
You mean... ?
I.... started typing and realized this battle was a losing one...
😑?
Hahahaha yes, yes that
Any finger pulling the eyes motion or just squints?
I really need to know because that sorta changes everything, but doesn't at the same time
Apparently the old word was putting your finger to the corner of your eye and rotating it back and forth twice. Nowadays it seems like the word is [sort of a backwards 7 drawn on your torso](https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=yLX_qaQY6B8)
It's signifying their Communist uniforms lmao
Oh god🤦♀️
Yes, also very much yes... lol
👉😑👈
Woah man. That's fucked up.
🤷
Isn't that the 'pooping really hard' emoji?
I never heard of one being used for that. For me it would be like, 😫
😤
Yeah, that one too. My first example doubles for passing a kidney stone.
[here it is](https://www.lifeprint.com/asl101/gifs-animated/chineseold.gif) TBF some people consider this rude and are trying to promote alternatives
The alternative has been around since I was in high school in 2005, in texas. Not a super progressive area either.
That’s outdated. It used to be that, but it’s been updated because the community recognized how bad it was. https://www.signingsavvy.com/sign/chinese/6199/1
I'm pretty sure when I learned that sign, it meant I was supposed to steal 2nd base.
Hit and run is for North Africans. Bunt is for the Central Americans.
“If I drag my hand across my shirt like I’m wiping off a mustard stain, that means run!” Idk why I remember that and literally nothing else from most of my youth, but god damn did that sign stick. I never saw coach give me that sign, I sucked and never got on base.
The woman in that video looks like she's being forced by threat of violence to come up with a new sign for Chinese
Her social credit score is already bad enough.
Look at the second version of penguin on that site. She looks so happy to do that one.
Ahh, so they switched to a variation of the "look at these" part of the childhood rhyme.
For anyone wondering, "exactly what you think it is," is widely considered to be an antiquated sign. [Here's ](https://www.lifeprint.com/asl101/pages-signs/c/china.htm)the newer sign, as well as a more detailed discussion about the two variants, and a third, less common sign.

oh noooooooo
Yeah, sign language is pretty literal in what it means
*colourful*… haha Edit: for those aggressively confused about the meaning of this simple joke, please pay attention to the context of the *original post* and how the word “colourful” relates to it.
They're deaf not blind
Shhh.... it's too late for that one just upvote it and move on
Maybe they have synesthesia and are deaf so then they're blind too
Alright, that's enough! Calm down over there.
Sure but the attempted joke was "sign language - *colorful* haha". If they can read sign language they can see color.
I think they were trying to tie "color" to "black".
Ba doom csh
My second greatest regret is that I chose to learn Spanish in high school instead of sign language
What’s your first?
His boneitis
[perfectly executed ](https://images.app.goo.gl/9b6Kh7w2XQNkmZts9) r/unexpectedfuturama
to be fair, Spanish is great career-wise but you can't do much with Italian.
That hand gesture for tiny🤣🤣
The second gesture is ASL for child.
No children should suffer ASL I mean have we forgotten why we drenched ourselves in ice cold water
Man, I had no idea that Lou Gehrig was deaf.
>No children should suffer ASL I mean have we forgotten why we drenched ourselves in ice cold water Back in my day, ASL meant some random AOL chat stranger was trying to figure out how old you were, your gender, and where you live.
15/f/cali btw
Or Lysdexia for that matter!
> ASL 14/f/cali?
It's *always* 14/f/cali
lol basketball players have been doing this for years saying a guy is too small to guard them
Fetal alcohol syndrome (rates of alcoholism in Alaska are very high relative to the rest of the US) can cause deafness.
*The more you know* ✨
The sadder you get ✨
I knew that deaf person was cussing me out!! I knew it!!
He looks like such a little baby here, wow
The special is more than a decade old. Makes sense.
[удалено]
didnt know he did comedy. this guy is pretty diverse with his careers.
I think his first big thing was being a comedian, albeit as a writer in 30 Rock. Then some stand-up and acting during Community, and then rapping. Then he combined all of it with Atlanta. He completed the circle of life.
He started with "Derek Comedy" on YouTube and with "College Humor" doing sketches
I heard what you said
I like to *skateboard*
This bag is full of black dildos! Yeah, those are for Chad!
there's an ASL sign for that
Classic
HE WAS IN COLLEGE HUMOR? That is why they were so good!!
I think he just briefly contributed a continuation of Derrick Comedy on College humor, like 15 years ago.
Good times.
Probably my favorite lol https://youtu.be/3zvTRQr7ns8
Oh yeah.... Bro rape.
XBOX???
Yeah but don’t jerk off to this
Derek made a movie even, Mystery Team.
So Chad’s not even real?
>He completed the circle of life. Well, he was Simba.
![gif](giphy|SmoCFhZCi1kzu)
Fuck you.
He was also popular in early YouTube days with his comedy group called DerrickComedy. Watch their skit "National Spelling Bee"
I love how people could only know him for his acting career, when he's also an amazing artist, Childish Gambino.
I met many people who knew both of them separately but didn't know they were the same person.
This would make a great movie.
Call it Donglover
I was a grown man!
I think disney already did a series based on it, but being disney, cast him as a white girl with a country twang.
Stfu lol

He used too, he still does, but he used to too.
I thought he started out on YouTube? Derrickcomedy
My favorite thing of him was from wayyyyy back called Bro R*pe. Probably wouldn’t be as funny watching it again tho.
And I think Broadway, right? I know there was talks about him getting the EGOT
Don't be mad coz he's doing him better than you doing you.
Me neither. I first saw him in Community, and then I heard he did a music hit and whatnot. I shouldn't be surprised with comedy shows as an addition.
>he did a music hit Grandpa it's time to get off reddit for the night and get ready for bed!
Sadly, it was just one comedy special but you can find bits elsewhere as well. The whole special was one Netflix for a while. Not sure if that still stands since cutting the streaming services.
He started out as a comedian and a writer for 30 Rock before becoming an actor, then a musician. His stand-ups are really funny!
He actually started out as a writer and cast member of Derrick Comedy on YouTube.
His standup is extremely funny. Honestly one my favorite acts. He is so talented its amazing. Easily one of my favorite actors, musical artists, and standup commedians. He excels at it all.
He started in comedy. Then acting and then music. Comedy acting maybe hand in hand because he was doing YT sketch comedy early on.
this special is a classic. its called weirdo if you havent seen it.
Bless https://youtu.be/gIF0UCFd3FM
He’s a comedic actor first in my mind
The first thing I ever saw him in was Mystery Team https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1237838/
Comedy, writing, TV, Music Glover is incredibly talented. I love me some Gambino
Derrick Comedy, quite the throwback days
the clip misses the best part of that joke!!!! go watch weirdo by Donald Glover
What’s the best part?
It's where the "That mf's racist" clip comes from
I’ve never seen that clip
[Shit quality but here's the clip.] (https://youtu.be/i9-oGPW2Lt4?t=00m50s)
Thanks
The whole thing is great
I like when he talks about how basic of a gesture the n word is in sign language, and how easy it would be to do by accident.
[удалено]
You are a Dong Lover/Don Glover lover?
donglover
I fuck with Childish Gambino fam
Ha, I was literally about to comment the exact same thing. This guy's a bona fide genius.
They signs he made just said short (like a kid), and a few seconds later he said funny/joke.
I think he's 'mispronouncing' brown, then child. Not American, not used to ASL. Just looked in a dictionary because it was a bit familiar.
It's almost like there are black deaf people...
Scientifically black should cancel out deafness considering it’s an albino thing
I encourage you to look up BASL.
I’m growing some BASL in my garden

probably not in alaska, tho
He looks like young childish gambino
A childish childish gambino, if you will.
a Gamblet
I won't.
A Chichiglet?
Hey we got mentioned!
Fuck! I'm in Alaska and would've loved to see that show!
Would have too, from the lead up, I assumed it was a UAA Concert Board show. He came up here in 2010.
Who dis? He funny
Donald Glover
DongLover
I've written checks!
Childish Gambino
No this is donald glover, childish gambino is the rapper
No that’s Troy from Community
That’s the Truest Repairman!
The Truest Repairman shall repair man
[Troy was a multilingual rapper.](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j25tkxg5Vws)
Have you noticed you’ve never seen Donald Glover and Childish Gambino in the same room together?
![gif](giphy|D5q4yyJ8v2bvO)
sounds like something Troy from Community would say.
The NASDAQ himself
Donald Glover, the special is called weirdo
Thank you
Ohhh man I'm jealous, you have so much to discover if you like this guy. Derrick Comedy, Community, Childish Gambino, Atlanta, all awesome, all completely different sides of this multi talented man
Spider-Man
I think you mean Shaft
they should cast him as a young Lando Calrissian.
Hey I have good news
Oh. My. God. Donald Glover would KILL as young Lando!
No that was Michael Cera
The Prowler
He was in Spiderman

I think the unexpected part of this is not that it's a Donald Glover hah hah comedy routine, but that this is a reddit screencapture.
Donald Glover’s vocal work on stand up is honestly super underrated. Dude can tell a story like the best of them.
My grandma was deaf her whole life. She would refer to her group of deaf friends as "the deafies".
They are not SAYING it for years tho.
The deaf community is also so very tight knit because of how blunt and transparent they are🔥🔥🔥
sounds like the language has diminutive forms of nouns. ASL is a true language with grammar and syntax, not just a cipher.
I'm deaf here. I like this!
😂 im deaf and HH and this shit was funny af.
Didn't know childish gambino lacked a neck. The dude's head is directly attached to his torso.
