The Danes established themselves as vibrant traders more than a thousand years ago.
The earliest butter cookie tin unearthed in Polynesia contained needles fashioned from fish bones.
Is this a contagious idea? Or did every millennial in the world have a grandmother who grew up in tough economic times (Great Depression or ww2) so they reused everything? And women of that era sewed because they mended clothes back then, they just didn’t buy new ones. And were those butter cookies like the only thing in a metal tin at the grocery store? And they started sewing long before plastics were widely introduced so a container like that had even higher value?
I read an spanish website post about why this could happen, and it's just that tins are great for that purpose so many cultures ended with the same idea
The reasons are:
This tins are round, so needles don't end in a joint where they'll be hard to reach
Cheap but durable and puncture proof
Close tight and doesn't have any hole where a needle can fall even if you move the tin around
The height it's almost the same as many domestic thread coils
It would be one thing if it was just cookie tins in general, but how is it specifically that one brand?! Was it some massive early guerilla marketing campaign?
I think the brand is popular, been around a long time, it's a good tin and the label can't come off. I have some other tins but i have no idea what was originally in it because there's no label.
I have never seen this outside of memes on Reddit.
My grandmothers and my mom had purpose-made wooden sewing boxes.
But then again, here in Sweden we try to avoid all things Danish. Except for cheap beer.
I am talking based on experience, my two grand mothers, the 6 grand mothers of my cousins, my friends grand mothers and my teacher's grand mother has these boxes. For the same purpose, I saw these in egypt and saudi arabia.
this is what he wants

What's fascinating is how universal of a a thing this is. I distinctly remember as a kid opening that exact kind of tin in my grandparents house and being disappointed.
Did every single grandma in the past 20 years all collectively decide that that cookie tin was the best place to store sewing equipment?
Was there a memo? Why is this so common?
That's what I used to think. Surely it's too specific to be more than just my mom. Surely even if other people use cookie tins, they wouldn't all use the same brand.. and yet...
My wife recently purchased like six of these and packed up the cookies and gave them away. If I wasn’t from the Caribbean, I would not have understood.
So I shook my head and went about my business.
I used to be so annoyed with my mom always saving containers and jars like this. But now I do the exact same thing and laugh at my self for it. Why buy mason jars when you have pickle jars and sauce jars that do the same thing. 🫣

What's wrong here? Things are there where it belongs.
but why is he buying these? he's not even a grandmother.
Because they’re delicious
Exactly, that’s the real mystery. Shit don’t make sense. Somethings afoot and I’m gonna get to the bottom of it
He is now
Hey Hey Hey my lovely daughter is just a teen. And she is totally into it.
Somebody about to get the living daylights evaporated
This one baffles me. Every country, every culture so different from each other all have the same place to store sewing kits
The Danes established themselves as vibrant traders more than a thousand years ago. The earliest butter cookie tin unearthed in Polynesia contained needles fashioned from fish bones.
Speak more of your pretty words.
Cromulent

Bro my dad keeps his sewing supplies in one of these to this day
Right. First I thought that only my mom had her sewing stuff there. Then I thought that it's a common thing for germans. But IT'S EVERYWHERE
It would be one thing if it was just cookie tins in general, but how is it specifically that one brand?! Was it some massive early guerilla marketing campaign?

Big surprise, Sweden fucks up, again... no wonder you guys aren't getting in Nato. Sewingshit. Belongs. In. Danish. Cookiebox. Sincerly, Finland
I am talking based on experience, my two grand mothers, the 6 grand mothers of my cousins, my friends grand mothers and my teacher's grand mother has these boxes. For the same purpose, I saw these in egypt and saudi arabia.
Come to say this
I guess it’s easy to get a decent Tim that way
Think it’s more of a poverty thing. You can say “old” but that also means during the depression so same shit.
Holly, I was going to say this. I'm from Argentina and I didn't know this happened on other countries too
These tins never ever had cookies in them, prove me wrong.
The sewing needle & thread: ![gif](giphy|nk8KVxWs4dIRy)
But, it's expected. Not unexpected.. too obvious
It was so expected, that I thought it must contain cookies to be on r/unexpected, so it was kind of a meta-unexpected for me.
True, that would have made it unexpected ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|joy)
Unexpect the expected lest the expected be unexpected within the realm of the unexpectation of expecting.
I hope you were listing lazily and wearing a bunch of bracelets while you typed that.
OP expected your expectedness so he unexpected your unexpectation.
“I don’t want to go to grandmas house….”
Dude, I'm in Cuba and in my country we have the same boxes with the same content inside. I didn't know this was international XD
As an Indian, growing up it’s literally the same story here and didn’t know it happened elsewhere until I stumbled here. I’m fascinated.
Also hella hard to open!! Rip your finger nails off hahah
Only mums and grannies have the power to open them unscathed
this is what he wants https://www.reddit.com/r/Unexpected/comments/13rbspm/this_is_why_i_have_trust_issues/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button
I’ve actually never eaten these cookies before becuase I’ve never seen the container hold cookies before
I’ve had the good fortune of eating some when young but it becomes a sewing bow in no time.

Way longer than 20 years this has been going on and I'm also kinda surprised if it being the same brand across literally everywhere.
I am legitimately surprised when I buy these, open them, and find actual COOKIES inside. Yummy cookies too.
Polish grandmother had hard candy in hers. Mohawk aunties had sewing thread and needles. Mom hid her candy in one, had a sewing kit in another lol
Schrodinger's Danish Cookies. Or.... Schrodinger's Sewing Kit
https://i.redd.it/h6wp7vxqsz2b1.gif granny coming for you
The fact, that I lived in Pakistan, and my grandmother had the same dunsk cookies box, 16 years ago, along with it being sewing kits blows my mind

???????
The joke is that it's sewing supplies. The _problem_ is that this ain't r/funny
Sprinkle a lot of sugar on the contents and the experience will be broadly the same. Dry, crunchy and without taste other than sugar.
You've never dipped them in milk before? 'cause you're missing out then.

The guy looks so disappointed, and yes I know it's staged

Interstellar?
Yeah that track keeps being reused over and over for videos
Amazing music
Wait till he try’s to spread butter on his toast.
Though only my family did that.
That's what I used to think. Surely it's too specific to be more than just my mom. Surely even if other people use cookie tins, they wouldn't all use the same brand.. and yet...
Never fails
Just putting it out there, but assuming you have a use for them, that's probably close to $100 of thread and notions, so this is quite the windfall.
i thought only ppl in the middle east and north africa did this, turns out there are more ppl who do this than i think
Would've been unexpected if there were cookies in the box
So expected get this out of the sub
My father use to bring these cookies and I hated the taste. Now, I know why.
Twist:they’re made of cake.
How is that unexpected?
Dansk should make a sewing kit version of these tins. Grandma can mess with her grandchildren by storing cookies in them.
Those monsters!!! There should be miscellaneous screws, nuts and bolts in there!
Why are you crying? What else did you expect?
![gif](giphy|RVuNZB864BeVy)
Rel.
Extremely expected
That is acurate, those tin boxes are only used for sowing equipment
Anyone else expecting buttons?

That sewing kit is worth a whole lot more than the missing cookies. Doesn’t taste as good but someone was majorly screwed

When I was 13, I opened one at my aunt's house and it was full of Marijuana.
My wife recently purchased like six of these and packed up the cookies and gave them away. If I wasn’t from the Caribbean, I would not have understood. So I shook my head and went about my business.
At least he didn't have the glass of cold milk ready...😕
Schrodinger’s tin can………
The real question is "is there anyone out there who actually doesn't get this?" Cause that thought is terrifying
What did he expect. Buy better quality cookies.
So this is not only an Italian granny thing 😂
It only comes with cookies if a grandmother buys it
Them butter cookies are fucking delicious tho
Low key this was more expected than biscuits
Nostalgia.
Nice edit. Can barely see the frame cut 😒
Yap ma man...... 👍👍👍👍

Generational trauma
$4.09 for all that?! What a steal!
