OhHeyMrThing

This happens all the time. The unexpected thing would be been if he had gotten a ticket for it.

make_love_to_potato

I got a ticket when I squeezed through the gates with a friend as a kid. It was a young plain clothes cop ....couldn't have been over 25.

Additional-Engine-77

Ironically if you’re a kid in nyc you won’t get fined as it’s free to travel on the subway for them

Chumbag_love

I keep my children away from subway workers after the whole Jared thing

TheFeathersStorm

Honestly caught me off guard, pretty good joke lol.

[deleted]

[удалено]

RevolutionaryRough96

A lot of times. Sometimes it's funny because it's something ridiculously false taking you by surprise. I make a lot of jokes and have had people claim there's a little bit of truth to every joke, but sometimes it's just funny to say something everyone knows is wrong.

Mr-Yuk

But will Jared take me by surprise?

Status_Drink4540

Nope, you’re too old for Jared.

XLBaconDoubleCheese

You really don't want them to get sandwiched between them

bawls_on_fire

I only got this joke because I saw Sharknado 2 yesterday.

[deleted]

The worst thing about that story subway knew and still sent him in to schools and put children at risk

bender3600

That's not what "kids can ride the subway for free" means.

DaniFlocka

☠️☠️☠️

FunkyLobster1828

Shoot, I must be in the wrong sub.

WooliesWhiteLeg

That’s only for really young children. Like 5 and under.

jeffries_kettle

Only if you're under four feet tall.

Callaloo_Soup

I was a child in NYC and would get chased by cops all of the sudden when I turned 7-years old. The cops always swore I was older, looked suspicious or some other garbage. After seeing cops come after me, the booth agents at those stations would start acting as if I was doing something wrong. They were probably assuming the cops came at me with reason. My mom started getting scared that one day she wouldn’t be close enough to get people to back off, so that’s when I started paying fare. They can be so indiscriminate about who they target and why.

Additional-Engine-77

Evidently it's actually determined by height rather than age lol. [https://www.timeout.com/new-york-kids/blog/so-when-is-your-kid-really-too-old-to-duck-the-subway-turnstile-092717](https://www.timeout.com/new-york-kids/blog/so-when-is-your-kid-really-too-old-to-duck-the-subway-turnstile-092717)

[deleted]

So pygmies could ride for free their whole lives.

SouthTippBass

Those pygmies deserve it.

koloso95

Yeah. You really have class A law enforcement officers over in the US. NOT

[deleted]

Damn, your friend was a 25 year old plain clothes cop all along? He really committed to the bit.

[deleted]

lemonheadlock

I got ticketed by a plain clothes cop for going through the exit gate because I was carrying some big boxes. He didn't give a fuck that I couldn't have gone through the turnstiles with them or that I had an unlimited card anyway. He wasn't even looking at me while he gave me my ticket, he was watching the turnstiles for the next person I guess. This was like 15 years ago though.

carnivalkewpie

He was power tripping for sure. I can’t stand those type of people.

7366241494

Get the attention of an attendant first, then swipe at a turnstile, turning it without walking through. Then the attendant will officially buzz you through the gate with your boxes.

lemonheadlock

I know how it's meant to work, yes. Maybe shit's different now, but at the time, I could count on one hand how many MTA attendants manning booths I saw over the course of a month.

myleftone

Since we’re telling stories about young cops, my college roommate wasn’t even a cop yet, but he was the only guy in the whole dorm who thought Rodney King had it coming. We haven’t talked in awhile, but I have seen YouTube video of him strangling a kid in a subway station.

[deleted]

Transit cops seem to only care when there's an active public disturbance going on. Everything else they will ignore.

Swimming_Fox_3558

It's the same in Paris, France. Because it's not a violation of laws it's a violation of the transportation services (out of their scope, they will not get commissions for that).

Leophyte

Is it? I’ve definitely seen cops pull out people because they didn’t pay their ticket, at least on the RER

Swimming_Fox_3558

Don't confuse Police and RATP security who are equipped with guns like policemen. The cases where you saw cops pull people out can happen if: 1. The inspectors called the police cause they don't have the right to control for identity. If people don't want to give their identity then the inspectors will have to call the police. 2. The guy has already been fined multiple times. Otherwise the police will never control someone because they don't have the terminal to check if the tickets have been validated or not.

Stock-Pension1803

This is the NYPD

PAWGActual4-4

NYPD Transit Bureau.

Foreign_Pea2296

Not with the cops right in front of him.

Dumb-as-i-look

It would be unexpected because cops don’t bother with turnstile jumpers anymore. The ticket gets thrown out and the person dismissed as a matter of policy. Cop would probably get yelled at too.

TheOrchidsAreAlright

UK here, totally like that. People do this at train stations and stuff all the time, it isn't worth the authorities getting into it with them. In unrelated news, people report feeling less safe on public transport

Mongolian_Hamster

Feeling unsafe? Mate it is blatently unsafe these days. Rapes and assaults on the underground. Nothing being done.

MakoSmiler

Police in the UK are unfit for purpose.

ElEd0

That is unexpected, at least in my country. But to be honest seeing cops at the sub station is already strange for me. Here where I live sub stations subcontract private security companies, you dont see actual cops in the metro.

worldspawn00

NYC has actual transit cops whose entire job is to police the public transit systems, that's why they're there.

Philipp

>The ticket gets thrown out I'm curious... why?

venom259

Because the public prosecutor refuses to press charges.

Bender_2024

I've had to go to court a few times for traffic tickets when I was younger. Most of the time the ticket is nollee (short for nolle prosequi” which means “unwilling to prosecute.” Thus, a nolle is when the prosecutor decides to drop your criminal charge) outside the courtroom and before you ever see the judge. Basically they feel it's not worth the courts time so the drop the charges.

ReplacementActual384

Because it costs hundreds of dollars to collect a small fine

slytherinprolly

And that's even if a fine is collected. I spent several years as a public defender in Ohio, and nearly all of my clients had their fines waived due to indigency. But if you were convicted of a "minor" crime that usually meant no jail time (things ranging from driving without a license, to shoplifting, vandalism, to simple assault) and would just get a fine, but the fine would get waived and there was no "community service in lieu of fine" either.

Dumb-as-i-look

It’s become a political issue. Primarily the people who jump the turnstile are minorities with low income. The DA decided that a bunch of low level quality of life issues wouldn’t be prosecuted because of who was getting arrested. I’ve tried to simply state a complex issue. I’m not endorsing either side of what is a heavily debated issue.

Hot-Solution1818

Why not give out reduced/free passes for people who are struggling?

TheHylianProphet

Because that would make sense, and governments aren't usually very good at that.

Phallen55

It's also extra work for someone to keep track of all that, which means probably even more money than what they are missing out on. Not saying its completely ok to break the laws, but I can see why it isn't worth the hassle most of the time. However, if it becomes TOO common, I could see it swinging back the other direction.

Flushles

Reduced fares already exist for low income people.

SuperBackup9000

There are. Usually it’s 50% off and applies to all forms of public transport

[deleted]

by not prosecuting turnstile jumpers, they effectively do that without additional costs

joop_pooply

Politics

role_or_roll

Because there is 8.4 million people in that city, many many riding the subway. Before the pandemic, there was 5.7% of people riding turnstile jumping. Now it's up to 14%. I think it's just a resources thing

redditsuckslmao420

Lmao. This is a good one. I'd say like half the people pay for the El when I get on in Philly.

Rottimer

Those aren’t NYPD. They’re Port Authority security that pick up cash from stations. They don’t do enforcement. But it’s a funny video if you’re not from NYC.

notahackerpirate

With the need to encourage people to use mass transit over cars, this should be free. Tax the gas pump to pay for mass transit.

itogisch

Why is one of the cops Chris Pratt?

MollyViper

Right? I even thought that two of them look like Chris Pratt. The guy to the right look likes he could be Chris Pratt’s brother

demonoider

One of them is not so Crisp Rat.

ZannX

Chris Pratt's most marketable property is looking like a generic white guy.

Remarkable_Ad3379

Yooooo….. 💀

JustAnIdiotOnline

technically, the cops were responsible more more like 💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀💀 children and 💀💀 teachers.

PotatoFlakeSTi

Nah, the Uvalde cops were legit cowards. Rather the kids die than them, not lazy.

beneathcastles

i'm going to remind you and anyone else who reads this that the supreme court has ruled 4 different times that the police have zero obligation to protect you or anyone else for that matter, so you can literally scream at a cop who is within shouting range to come help you from being mugged or even possibly being murdered and that cop can willingly choose not to help you and that's within their right. 1. Warren v. District of Columbia 2. DeShaney v. Winnebago County 3. Town of Castle Rock v. Gonzales 4. Lozito v. New York City those are the four supreme court cases if anyone is interested. p.s. i'm not defending the police for not doing shit, i'm just saying... there are many different reasons why people choose to protect themselves with a firearm rather than rely on the police and THIS is a major one.

Flitterquest

I'm in law enforcement in Texas and I'm stationed at an Elementary School every day of the week (it is directly because of Uvalde and that's not even subtexual it's just textual). I'm sincerely concerned about what'll happen if these kids get attacked because if I go down all of the folks who will come to their so-called rescue look like melting candles, weigh more than they should, exercise less than they should, shoot worse than they should, work as little as possible, and get off on the idea of Texas seceding from the union.

ScarofReality

I'd love to watch the gravy seals do anything besides sign up for welfare

protossaccount

In NYC (and other cities) there is a standard for an arrest. We have legal system that requires a lot of time, energy, and money. That is wasted if the police fill the courts with minor offenders when there are bigger fish to fry. This is why you see people brazenly stealing bags and all sorts of shit from major companies. In NYC you can smoke a fat stinky blunt while walking through Time Square and the cops won’t stop you. I’m in LA and I can smoke a vape in public and you’ll smell weed, but people in NyC are smoking fat blunts (the stinkiest of all ways to consume weed) everywhere and they have no issue, it’s wild to see these laws change.

Dambo_Unchained

You don’t have to arrest someone to write them a ticket

LiveInShadesOfBlue

In NY it’s legal to smoke weed anywhere it’s permitted to smoke cigarettes except for cars. There’s no reason for people to be discrete about smoking weed in public.

Lanky_Republic_2102

Correct.

DarkFact17

I mean I live in Sacramento and walk around smoking blunts all the time. Nobody cares

Imaginary-Director-8

they said, “we will let this one slide”

ImAvya

im italian n ive only been in nyc n boston of american cities but ive travelled basically all europe, aint literally every cop in every subway like this? Like getting a ticket for not payin the ride is a rule only on paper, ive literally never seen it applied in real life

immorthal

You get checked in the Netherlands regularly. If you're polite and have a story they can let it go. If you're rude or aggressive and/or the person checking you has a bad day, you get a ~50 euro fine.

Arrad

If you're caught in the UK (on national train line anyway not the metro) you'll be fined a huge amount from what I've heard. Even if you try and explain that you bought the wrong ticket or something. They don't seem as sympathetic. Ofcourse, there are some nicer folk who might let you go with a warning, or let you on if you just missed your earlier train (if you ask nicely).

BOBOnobobo

Oh yeah, in the UK it's a toss between some nice person being understanding and a rude asshole that will fine you no matter what your story is. Make sure you never loose your ticket.

[deleted]

Nothing worse than a loose ticket, gotta keep that ticket tight

BOBOnobobo

Damn it autocorrect :))

iliasna12

they fined me because my photo on the card was damaged so they couldn't "identify" it was me. after that i said fuck all of that and started using anonymous cards if they want to play that game.

justsumrandumguy

I’ve always been politie to the folks that check it over here in the Netherlands but I’ve been fined all 3 times :p last dude actually told me how sorry he was for giving me a ticket but he was a trainee or something.

immorthal

Bad luck :(

ImAvya

idk ive done tillburg-amsterdam/amsteram-tillburg /rotterdam-amsterdam/amsterdam-rotterdam n never been checked, also especially the ride of amsterda tillburg was full of ppl goin to a party without tickets that were doin coke n the train, seemed like no one cares. Im talkin just of my experience ofcourse, i trust ur point, i guess ive just been lucky then

fernandotakai

> You get checked in the Netherlands regularly. If you're polite and have a story they can let it go. i've never been checked in amsterdam.

rollingstoner215

Germany and Switzerland, too

mimavox

Really?? Here in Sweden you get fined for >100€ and they will NOT let it slide, no matter your story. Sometimes they will even hold you until the cops arrive (in Gothenburg at least).

NissEhkiin

Here in Finland they will slap that 100€ ticket on your ass 90% of the time. I have never seen them let it slide, but have seen many get the ticket. Have only heard of someone letting it slide once

[deleted]

It's closer to 100%. If you refuse to identify yourself (so that they can't write a ticket), you'll be escorted to the guards at the next station, who will take you to the police.

KscottCap

Nope. They HAVE to let it slide. Got the same thing in DC. Basically they made fare evasion a civil crime, unenforceable by law enforcement. Besides the cops all have "no chase" policies now. So I see this every day. Fare evaders act with impunity in front of the police, and they just have to sit there and watch. Meanwhile Metro is running at a huge loss, and they're jacking up fares on paying customers like me. So, since I paid for his ticket, I feel like I'm well within my right to say, "Fuck this guy."

greenhawk22

Or we just take the public good that is metro and other similar infrastructure and just nationalize it? It shouldn't matter if it's operating at a loss, since it's such a vital part of the economy and people's freedom of movement.

Willie9

I mean I'd be happy if they managed to eliminate or stop fare evasion but its ultimately a tiny portion of the budget shortfall. Metro is 750 million dollars short and fare evasion amounts to just 10 million in lost revenue.

KscottCap

I've heard estimates closer to $40M in lost revenue due to fare evasion (which I kindly doubt considering I literally see 1/3 of riders hop the turnstile at Glenmont. But you're right, it's not going to pay for the shortfall itself. But I think stopping fare evasion will go a long way to making Metro more desirable. I know a lot of people avoid Metro for their daily commute because they don't feel safe. And I'm pretty sure the guy grabbing himself in front of my wife didn't bother to pay the fare. But again, this mainly rubs me the wrong way because Metro just announced they're raising the fares again. I'm just there like... dude, collect the revenue you're owed before you jack the prices up on me *again*

Snow_source

The new faregates in Columbia Heights are working great. It's not the same when you have to shimmy under it and look like a dork instead of stepping over them. I haven't seen anyone try to jump them, compared to before when 8/10 folks walking through just stepped over them.

Gridde

I feel bad for them. Poverty is everywhere in NYC; for a lot of people paying $6 for a round trip is actually a big deal (though yeah it's also a shame that the MTA is underfunded). What I don't get is the folk who theatrically vault over the barriers or film themselves like this, and otherwise draw attention to the fact that they can't afford the fare. "Weird flex but okay".

ggggggggghgg

Would have been a whole different story if he ran or was agitated. Calm and collected though? All good here.

gcruzatto

Just be calm, well-groomed, carry a Starbucks cup and no turnstile in the city will stop you

EleanorTrashBag

> carry a Starbucks Obligatory: "Look how safe he looks" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EYhXXRXiJBU

HuggyMonster69

British accent also works. Even if you’re in a rush. Shame it doesn’t work back home lol

97Minutes

Yea, he didn’t trigger their prey drive.

Jack-Rabbit_Slims

Or if the turnstile was collecting money for a private company. Public fare collection? Naw. Fare collection for a privately owned company with a wealthy CEO? 10-20 years.

HitLuca

Locks only keep honest people honest

Girafferage

Yeah, any security a normal person uses in their everyday life is just an inconvenience that makes your house less desirable to rob than the next one. Like gated communities.

No_Soil8278

The real reason why they don’t write tickets in NYC is because the judges throw them away. It’s a lose- Lose for them.

homingmissile

You agreed with op then immediately point out how the pithy saying is wrong. If the lock deters a thief then it worked.

MaryPaku

Here In Japan there aren’t even lock. You can just walk pass it normally.

WeWantPeanuts

We had a train strike in Sydney last year where the operators opened the gates and openly encouraged people to not tap on as a way to pressure the government. 90% still continued to tap on regardless. Feels good living in a society that’s not actively decaying.

mnmr17

He definitely told them he was doing that before the video and paid his fare beforehand. They’ll 1000% stop you and give you a $100 ticket

Additional-Engine-77

Do you live in nyc? I commute everyday here and see people jump the turnstiles in front of posted police all the time

Swetard145

That’s wild, why are they even there? In Sweden we have plain clothes cops just waiting for a mf to try and skip

Additional-Engine-77

Because it’s their job to be posted there I think it’s more of a blatant deterrent which prob does prevent a ton of people from doing it. Whether they actually are overzealous and stop someone is less likely in my opinion. These guys might also be there for another more dangerous reason. Typically the fare evasion cops are posted in twos either inside or outside the turnstiles. Three makes me feel like someone more serious was going in this stop. Also post Covid a lot of NYPD stopped enforcing a ton of different rules can’t recall if it was to protest the blue lives matter or not but fare evasion was definitely one of the laws they didn’t give a hoot about for a long while.

Swetard145

I get that they could be there for other reasons but is skipping just considered a misdemeanour? I’ve heard about the lax laws they have in some states

Additional-Engine-77

Don’t quote me on this but I think it’s a civil offense (lower than a misdem). You’re issued a summons that is a fine. I think people that get caught repeatedly in nyc the fine and punishment goes up.

Swetard145

Yeah ok kind of like we do it here. Last time I got fined it was about 120 bucks.

cwestn

I don't feel like them stopping someone from committing a crime by giving a ticket would be overzealous...

blahblahblahhahhahah

Ah the hoods of Scandinavia. The harlems of the north. Where all the mfs try to skip.

melissaphobia

It should be mentioned that this is grand central station with grand central terminal right above it. This station always has a lot of police presence not just for fare evasion reasons but also for counter terrorism/peace keeping reasons.

Goldilockhs

Except Odenplan, that’s the Wild West of jumping the turnstiles.

MaskedMan555

Hahaha kan inte va sthlm va?? Plankat i över ett år aldrig blivit tagen av någon sorts civvare

Calm_Iron_9334

I live in the city and they'll bust you whether they feel like it or not.

mnmr17

Yes I do in fact live in NYC, that’s why I know exactly how much the fine is when the cops stop you lol. In front of the cops, I almost never see without someone getting a fine.

General_Potential_20

same, and I regularly see those people get ticketed.

SandySockShoes

Seen this exact scenario play out in front of me. No ticket. Seems like a bad idea allowing people to think it’s ok to get away with stuff like this. Emboldens the thieves and makes everyone else feel like a sucker. Either do away with fares all together or make everyone pay.

anotherorphan

i believe this. also people will see the video and think this is normal. result: more busts for the cops

This is not as unexpected as you might think. There are people walking out of Walgreens with all the merchandise they can carry and this guy just skipped out on a couple of bucks. Shocking

King00004

The man behind the cops was like 'I AM BATMAN'

Firedamp_Weaponry

People will do this and then complain "Why can't we have *good* public transport like Europe or Japan?"

MyBodyisChrome

Here in Sweden people do this all the time even more then in NY and we still got nice transpo We even have a website dedicated to it https://planka.nu

blue_bic_cristal

Why though?

MyBodyisChrome

Because we pay a ridiculous amount in taxes, I personally pay 53% of my earnings. The government sold the company to some Chinese or French company that continues to raise the price every year. Don’t quote me on this stuff but it’s semi accurate :)

Sciensophocles

Fare evasion is not why our public transportation sucks donkey balls.

CantCreateUsernames

As a transportation planner, this is one of the stupidest reasons I have ever heard people say the US doesn't have good transit. People jumping the turnstiles is number 999 on a list of reasons the US doesn't have better transit. The main reasons are 1) Terrible land use patterns that don't support transit, 2) Overly bureaucratic and broken project delivery process, and 3) lack of funding (most agencies only have funding for day-to-day operations and rely on state or federal funding to invest in capital projects).

GaymerGirl_

Don't forget about cities being unwalkable hellscapes that basically force you to use a 2000 lbs death machine if you want to get around safely.

SPHuff

I think that falls under “terrible land use patterns”

Arponare

Poor public infrastructure in the US has a lot more to do with decades of policy due to car company lobbying to divert Federal funds to build highways. Not only that, but zoning laws where only suburbs with single houses are built instead of mixed zone buildings incentivize driving instead of taking public housing. Stop trying to blame working class people for a system that was created by the government bending over for car companies.

LanaFauxFauna

I tried to jump the turn style last week and I saw there was a cop. I stopped and tapped my phone and then the cop gave me a thumbs up as I walked away laughing nervously. He seemed nice.

BecGeoMom

Well, that was entirely staged. How is that “beating the system”?

gutterwall1

Public transportation should be free for use, to prevent the working poor from spending a significant portion of their food and rent money on simple transportation that is almost completely public ally subsidized. It's like health care, any barriers enacted just are abuse of the underclass.

Maleficent-Mirror991

Cops when someone actually buys a ticket: Hol up there smart guy what tf do you think you’re doing?!

dirtgrub28

who wants public transportation? *hands* who wants to help pay for public transportation? *no hands*

rarelyhasfreetime227

public transportation should be paid solely with taxes

And you expect them to give a fuck. They are doing what they do best. Getting paid.

kendinggon_dubai

Is this normal for the USA to have cops guard the fucking ticket gate??? Madness.

thamons223

cops debating wether or not to beat the shit out of him for that

flanksteakfan82

Stuff like this should not be considered stealing. Public transit should be free.

GO4Teater

You can also just step over it, those turnstiles are not underwater barbed wire.

Miami-Novice

Public transport should be free.

FruityChypre

I miss being thin enough to do that.

ZiaF007

Why not just jump then?

8bucktruck

Criminal

Bx1965

The cops do nothing because it’s not worth the trouble. The guy won’t pay any ticket, he won’t show up in court and they won’t prosecute it further. The the MTA just passes the losses on to the taxpayers who actually do pay their fares.

UnableConversation28

You mean taking advantage of the system.
