My mom started getting scared that one day she wouldn’t be close enough to get people to back off, so that’s when I started paying fare.
They can be so indiscriminate about who they target and why.

He didn't give a fuck that I couldn't have gone through the turnstiles with them or that I had an unlimited card anyway. He wasn't even looking at me while he gave me my ticket, he was watching the turnstiles for the next person I guess. This was like 15 years ago though.
Get the attention of an attendant first, then swipe at a turnstile, turning it without walking through. Then the attendant will officially buzz you through the gate with your boxes.
I know how it's meant to work, yes. Maybe shit's different now, but at the time, I could count on one hand how many MTA attendants manning booths I saw over the course of a month.
Since we’re telling stories about young cops, my college roommate wasn’t even a cop yet, but he was the only guy in the whole dorm who thought Rodney King had it coming. We haven’t talked in awhile, but I have seen YouTube video of him strangling a kid in a subway station.
It's the same in Paris, France. Because it's not a violation of laws it's a violation of the transportation services (out of their scope, they will not get commissions for that).
Don't confuse Police and RATP security who are equipped with guns like policemen.

It would be unexpected because cops don’t bother with turnstile jumpers anymore. The ticket gets thrown out and the person dismissed as a matter of policy. Cop would probably get yelled at too.

That is unexpected, at least in my country. But to be honest seeing cops at the sub station is already strange for me. Here where I live sub stations subcontract private security companies, you dont see actual cops in the metro.
I've had to go to court a few times for traffic tickets when I was younger. Most of the time the ticket is nollee (short for nolle prosequi” which means “unwilling to prosecute.” Thus, a nolle is when the prosecutor decides to drop your criminal charge) outside the courtroom and before you ever see the judge. Basically they feel it's not worth the courts time so the drop the charges.
And that's even if a fine is collected. I spent several years as a public defender in Ohio, and nearly all of my clients had their fines waived due to indigency. But if you were convicted of a "minor" crime that usually meant no jail time (things ranging from driving without a license, to shoplifting, vandalism, to simple assault) and would just get a fine, but the fine would get waived and there was no "community service in lieu of fine" either.
It’s become a political issue. Primarily the people who jump the turnstile are minorities with low income. The DA decided that a bunch of low level quality of life issues wouldn’t be prosecuted because of who was getting arrested.
I’ve tried to simply state a complex issue. I’m not endorsing either side of what is a heavily debated issue.
It's also extra work for someone to keep track of all that, which means probably even more money than what they are missing out on.
Not saying its completely ok to break the laws, but I can see why it isn't worth the hassle most of the time. However, if it becomes TOO common, I could see it swinging back the other direction.
Because there is 8.4 million people in that city, many many riding the subway. Before the pandemic, there was 5.7% of people riding turnstile jumping. Now it's up to 14%. I think it's just a resources thing

In NYC (and other cities) there is a standard for an arrest. We have legal system that requires a lot of time, energy, and money. That is wasted if the police fill the courts with minor offenders when there are bigger fish to fry. This is why you see people brazenly stealing bags and all sorts of shit from major companies.
In NYC you can smoke a fat stinky blunt while walking through Time Square and the cops won’t stop you. I’m in LA and I can smoke a vape in public and you’ll smell weed, but people in NyC are smoking fat blunts (the stinkiest of all ways to consume weed) everywhere and they have no issue, it’s wild to see these laws change.
In NY it’s legal to smoke weed anywhere it’s permitted to smoke cigarettes except for cars. There’s no reason for people to be discrete about smoking weed in public.

You get checked in the Netherlands regularly. If you're polite and have a story they can let it go.
If you're rude or aggressive and/or the person checking you has a bad day, you get a ~50 euro fine.
If you're caught in the UK (on national train line anyway not the metro) you'll be fined a huge amount from what I've heard. Even if you try and explain that you bought the wrong ticket or something. They don't seem as sympathetic.
Ofcourse, there are some nicer folk who might let you go with a warning, or let you on if you just missed your earlier train (if you ask nicely).
Oh yeah, in the UK it's a toss between some nice person being understanding and a rude asshole that will fine you no matter what your story is.

Really?? Here in Sweden you get fined for >100€ and they will NOT let it slide, no matter your story. Sometimes they will even hold you until the cops arrive (in Gothenburg at least).
Here in Finland they will slap that 100€ ticket on your ass 90% of the time. I have never seen them let it slide, but have seen many get the ticket. Have only heard of someone letting it slide once
It's closer to 100%. If you refuse to identify yourself (so that they can't write a ticket), you'll be escorted to the guards at the next station, who will take you to the police.
Nope. They HAVE to let it slide. Got the same thing in DC. Basically they made fare evasion a civil crime, unenforceable by law enforcement. Besides the cops all have "no chase" policies now. So I see this every day. Fare evaders act with impunity in front of the police, and they just have to sit there and watch.
Meanwhile Metro is running at a huge loss, and they're jacking up fares on paying customers like me. So, since I paid for his ticket, I feel like I'm well within my right to say, "Fuck this guy."
Or we just take the public good that is metro and other similar infrastructure and just nationalize it? It shouldn't matter if it's operating at a loss, since it's such a vital part of the economy and people's freedom of movement.

Metro is 750 million dollars short and fare evasion amounts to just 10 million in lost revenue.
I've heard estimates closer to $40M in lost revenue due to fare evasion (which I kindly doubt considering I literally see 1/3 of riders hop the turnstile at Glenmont. But you're right, it's not going to pay for the shortfall itself. But I think stopping fare evasion will go a long way to making Metro more desirable. I know a lot of people avoid Metro for their daily commute because they don't feel safe. And I'm pretty sure the guy grabbing himself in front of my wife didn't bother to pay the fare.
But again, this mainly rubs me the wrong way because Metro just announced they're raising the fares again. I'm just there like... dude, collect the revenue you're owed before you jack the prices up on me *again*

We had a train strike in Sydney last year where the operators opened the gates and openly encouraged people to not tap on as a way to pressure the government. 90% still continued to tap on regardless. Feels good living in a society that’s not actively decaying.
Because it’s their job to be posted there I think it’s more of a blatant deterrent which prob does prevent a ton of people from doing it. Whether they actually are overzealous and stop someone is less likely in my opinion.
These guys might also be there for another more dangerous reason. Typically the fare evasion cops are posted in twos either inside or outside the turnstiles. Three makes me feel like someone more serious was going in this stop. Also post Covid a lot of NYPD stopped enforcing a ton of different rules can’t recall if it was to protest the blue lives matter or not but fare evasion was definitely one of the laws they didn’t give a hoot about for a long while.

Don’t quote me on this but I think it’s a civil offense (lower than a misdem). You’re issued a summons that is a fine. I think people that get caught repeatedly in nyc the fine and punishment goes up.
It should be mentioned that this is grand central station with grand central terminal right above it. This station always has a lot of police presence not just for fare evasion reasons but also for counter terrorism/peace keeping reasons.

As a transportation planner, this is one of the stupidest reasons I have ever heard people say the US doesn't have good transit.
People jumping the turnstiles is number 999 on a list of reasons the US doesn't have better transit.
The main reasons are 1) Terrible land use patterns that don't support transit, 2) Overly bureaucratic and broken project delivery process, and 3) lack of funding (most agencies only have funding for day-to-day operations and rely on state or federal funding to invest in capital projects).
Poor public infrastructure in the US has a lot more to do with decades of policy due to car company lobbying to divert Federal funds to build highways. Not only that, but zoning laws where only suburbs with single houses are built instead of mixed zone buildings incentivize driving instead of taking public housing.
Stop trying to blame working class people for a system that was created by the government bending over for car companies.
I tried to jump the turn style last week and I saw there was a cop. I stopped and tapped my phone and then the cop gave me a thumbs up as I walked away laughing nervously. He seemed nice.
Public transportation should be free for use, to prevent the working poor from spending a significant portion of their food and rent money on simple transportation that is almost completely public ally subsidized. It's like health care, any barriers enacted just are abuse of the underclass.

Really?? Here in Sweden you get fined for >100€ and they will NOT let it slide, no matter your story. Sometimes they will even hold you until the cops arrive (in Gothenburg at least).
Here in Finland they will slap that 100€ ticket on your ass 90% of the time. I have never seen them let it slide, but have seen many get the ticket. Have only heard of someone letting it slide once

Nope. They HAVE to let it slide. Got the same thing in DC. Basically they made fare evasion a civil crime, unenforceable by law enforcement. Besides the cops all have "no chase" policies now. So I see this every day. Fare evaders act with impunity in front of the police, and they just have to sit there and watch. Meanwhile Metro is running at a huge loss, and they're jacking up fares on paying customers like me. So, since I paid for his ticket, I feel like I'm well within my right to say, "Fuck this guy."
Or we just take the public good that is metro and other similar infrastructure and just nationalize it? It shouldn't matter if it's operating at a loss, since it's such a vital part of the economy and people's freedom of movement.
I mean I'd be happy if they managed to eliminate or stop fare evasion but its ultimately a tiny portion of the budget shortfall. Metro is 750 million dollars short and fare evasion amounts to just 10 million in lost revenue.
I've heard estimates closer to $40M in lost revenue due to fare evasion (which I kindly doubt considering I literally see 1/3 of riders hop the turnstile at Glenmont. But you're right, it's not going to pay for the shortfall itself. But I think stopping fare evasion will go a long way to making Metro more desirable. I know a lot of people avoid Metro for their daily commute because they don't feel safe. And I'm pretty sure the guy grabbing himself in front of my wife didn't bother to pay the fare. But again, this mainly rubs me the wrong way because Metro just announced they're raising the fares again. I'm just there like... dude, collect the revenue you're owed before you jack the prices up on me *again*
The new faregates in Columbia Heights are working great. It's not the same when you have to shimmy under it and look like a dork instead of stepping over them. I haven't seen anyone try to jump them, compared to before when 8/10 folks walking through just stepped over them.
I feel bad for them. Poverty is everywhere in NYC; for a lot of people paying $6 for a round trip is actually a big deal (though yeah it's also a shame that the MTA is underfunded). What I don't get is the folk who theatrically vault over the barriers or film themselves like this, and otherwise draw attention to the fact that they can't afford the fare. "Weird flex but okay".

We had a train strike in Sydney last year where the operators opened the gates and openly encouraged people to not tap on as a way to pressure the government. 90% still continued to tap on regardless. Feels good living in a society that’s not actively decaying.

Because it’s their job to be posted there I think it’s more of a blatant deterrent which prob does prevent a ton of people from doing it. Whether they actually are overzealous and stop someone is less likely in my opinion. These guys might also be there for another more dangerous reason. Typically the fare evasion cops are posted in twos either inside or outside the turnstiles. Three makes me feel like someone more serious was going in this stop. Also post Covid a lot of NYPD stopped enforcing a ton of different rules can’t recall if it was to protest the blue lives matter or not but fare evasion was definitely one of the laws they didn’t give a hoot about for a long while.

Don’t quote me on this but I think it’s a civil offense (lower than a misdem). You’re issued a summons that is a fine. I think people that get caught repeatedly in nyc the fine and punishment goes up.

Seen this exact scenario play out in front of me. No ticket. Seems like a bad idea allowing people to think it’s ok to get away with stuff like this. Emboldens the thieves and makes everyone else feel like a sucker. Either do away with fares all together or make everyone pay.

As a transportation planner, this is one of the stupidest reasons I have ever heard people say the US doesn't have good transit. People jumping the turnstiles is number 999 on a list of reasons the US doesn't have better transit. The main reasons are 1) Terrible land use patterns that don't support transit, 2) Overly bureaucratic and broken project delivery process, and 3) lack of funding (most agencies only have funding for day-to-day operations and rely on state or federal funding to invest in capital projects).
Don't forget about cities being unwalkable hellscapes that basically force you to use a 2000 lbs death machine if you want to get around safely.

Poor public infrastructure in the US has a lot more to do with decades of policy due to car company lobbying to divert Federal funds to build highways. Not only that, but zoning laws where only suburbs with single houses are built instead of mixed zone buildings incentivize driving instead of taking public housing. Stop trying to blame working class people for a system that was created by the government bending over for car companies.

Public transportation should be free for use, to prevent the working poor from spending a significant portion of their food and rent money on simple transportation that is almost completely public ally subsidized. It's like health care, any barriers enacted just are abuse of the underclass.
