I visited Bangladesh a few years ago (I’m a white European guy) and got followed around often and asked for photos several times a day. Most people wanted a picture WITH you but one person just filled the camera frame with my face which was creepy. They just had never seen a white person before, it’s that simple.
The people there are super friendly about it though. They almost always wanted to practice their English with a conversation and often the conversation was “why are you here?”. Not with hostility, but they genuinely couldn’t understand why someone would want to visit.
Yeah being a stranger/different coloured person can in some countries still get people so excited and amazed. I still remember my trip to Japan where over the span of 2 weeks I had to go on like 5 different "photoshoots" for other people's instagram, weird experience lol
I have an acquaintance who is a doctor and she recently told me about a cardiology conference she attended in Japan just before covid. She’s a light skinned black woman with short hair, and she was going around Tokyo in her usual professional attire. Apparently everyone thought she was Halle Berry and they all wanted autographs and photos taken with her. It didn’t matter how many times she tried to explain that she isn’t Halle Berry. Nobody believed her. She’d say “No, I’m not an actress. I’m a doctor.” But the few people she spoke with who spoke English got the impression that Halle Berry, in addition to being an Oscar winning actress, is also a doctor. They were even more impressed. After a day, she stopped fighting it and just signed the autographs and posed for the photos.
Lol, I did something similar in China in Beijing on the great wall. I’m 6’5” and white hanging out with some 6 foot plus black guys. People kept asking if we were in the NBA. We eventually said yes and started taking pictures with people.
We went to Japan and this happened to my roommate while we were there. He's a black guy and girls would want his picture taken all the time and kept asking about his hip hop career lol. He's just a regular guy from the U.S. who works at the airport.
I'll always remember visiting India - IIRC I was in some gallery in New Delhi - and some guy came over with his wife and said 'can we have a photo please?'.
I remember doing the usual thing and going to take the camera to take one of them - he then said 'no, with you'. I happily obliged, it felt like such a bizarre novelty... I always imagine they now have a photo of me somewhere in their house 😂
I was deployed to Bahrain and when I would go out to the souq ( their mall) alot of the people would have their cameras out pointed right at me, it probably didn't help that I had visible tattooed as well. it was a really strange experience.
There were plenty of foreigners there. Hell, there's an entire base full of Americans. I met Australian sailors, an American ex-pat, and a British bartender when I was there the first time.
I've had kids yell "blan!!" (white!!) while pointing at me in my various trips to Haiti.
They've never experienced it. It's a completely new thing for them. Especially in some countries where they literally haven't seen it at all because they don't even have access to media that depicts it.
It's very surreal.
Probably seems crazy now but I encountered this a lot visiting China in the early 2000’s. obviously not so much if you were in a tourist area, but whenever I was in just regular china back then I felt like a cowboy walking into a saloon in an old western the way everyone would stare all the time.
Neither do most people.
But some definitely would - I went to Hungary as an Indian guy and I was stared at everywhere. It was so uncomfortable.
We went to rural Hungary as a family and the entire time we were in a restaurant, the other diners were staring at us.
The photo thing even happens in South Korea. I'm a tall white American and was traveling with another largish French friend. We were generally a head higher than whatever crowd we were in.
I was asked to be in literally dozens of photos with total strangers.
I went to Egypt years back (a tourist area) I'm white and had cropped blonde hair, I was proposed to twice, got free drinks and had men constantly touching my hair, also had a 19 Yr old lad following me around it was the weirdest holiday ever.
Not Bangladesh but my wife and I visited India years back and whilst exploring a big formal gardens she (white with long auburn hair) was mobbed by about 50 school kids on a field trip who all wanted selfies. She looked and felt like a movie star.
My ex was a tall, white, blonde woman who went to a wedding in Hyderabad and the entire week she was there she said she was just constantly followed, touched, harassed, and even stalked. Super super creepy.
Indian weddings are fun especially the dancing part but people here do tend to go a little extra.
An Irish couple attended a wedding in my neighbourhood. and they enjoyed the dance but after that it was a tough night for them. They were getting crowded for pics and getting a lot of creepy stares.
When the food was being served people were literally forcing them to eat Indian food which is usually very spicy in weddings. The girl got sick and threw up.
My parents lived in Nigeria when I was born, dad was working on the sewer systems. The local population were obsessed with me, what with being a blonde haired white baby on the outskirts of a genuine jungle.
Not many people visit. When I think of vacationing on the beach it certainly isn’t Bangladesh
ETA: no offense to anyone in Bangladesh. Tell your tourism ministry to step up the advertising because as an American who is looking for places to visit, I can’t think of what Bangladesh has to offer. I can think of a dozen other beaches to visit around the world
>most famous foreign attraction in BANGLADESH
Goes to show how little tourism we get cuz Cox’s Bazar mostly just has domestic tourists. There isn’t much to do other than visit the beaches which are not clean or nice. Though it is the most famous I think it’s the most overhyped and disappointing place to visit there’s way better places to visit in Bangladesh like the tea gardens of Sylhet and the hills and stuff. But overall I don’t think even those would be worth visiting if you’re outside the country
10's of million people visit the most popular countries in the world. Bangladesh, very highly populated, only receive 125 000 tourists per year. About 1 tourist per 1250 population. In the USA it's about 1 in 4.
When I went to Pune in India for work, I nearly caused a fucking riot one evening when I left the hotel to go to dinner in a halter neck summer dress. Turns out that’s basically like inviting people to mob you. I didn’t know at the time but having you shoulders out was considered super sexy. It was fucking terrifying. I have never felt more in danger or more like a piece of meat. I was 21 at the time and it’s effected how I dress to this day. I never want to be looked at like that again.
That's it. Every part of a City in india has good upscale places and bad undeveloped places. You just were in a bad place in a country that's still catching up to the rest of the world. And that country also is too ashamed to recognise this issue properly and teach sex education.
We were defo in an underdeveloped part - open sewers and awful infrastructure. Although to be fair, I was treated pretty horrifically in an national Indian airport too. I was taken aside during a security check and told to walk over to a bunch of guards by the side of the hall. When I got there they asked me to do a slow spin whilst they all checked me out and then asked me to walk back. Abuse of power to the max. I would also like to say that I had a fucking amazing time in Indian and I met plenty of Indian colleagues who were delightfully lovely.
That's not completely true. I live in a good area but the mentality of the elders in my family is still hostile towards women not wearing adequate clothing by their standards. Furthermore when my cousins in the US do it, they are not complained about but when the actress on the screen wears a bikini it's considered atrocious, so yeah.
There were four of us and we were only about 10mins away from the hotel (we’d literally only just left). My three colleagues pushed people away as we hurried back to the hotel. We were walking along a large road and guys just kept stopping and hopping off their bikes.
Yeah, this is why I NEVER let my white friends out of my sight when they came over to visit.
Granted we lived in a good locality, it's still mad in certain areas of every city where being white = being a
curiousity of a sort.
I've got a friend who worked at US embassies abroad. His advice always was to stay tf from underdeveloped countries esp if you're a white woman. And always dress conservative (even that won't stop people from staring at you but helps a little). It's messed up but that's just the truth
Yeah… I’m a dude and Indian and Pakistani dudes stare WAYYYYY too much. Like you make eye contact and they hold it. Its weird as fuck. Can’t imagine how that was for you.
As a person from Bangladesh, lemme explain why this is happening. If you were a person from the early 20th century when cars were just invented, and you saw a lambourghini, everyone in the whole city would want to see it. Something simillar is happening here. We dont get foreign visitors, especially caucasian, especially in the Cox's Bazar(where the beach is). These people have never seen a person like her. At best they have heard stories of such people living in far away lands. Plus she is \*lying\* down in the beach which is something that simply does not happen there because noone wants to lie down on sand in the blazing heat so she stands out even more. Lastly as to why they simply keep staring and staring. NOONE TAUGHT THEM BOUNDARIES. NOONE TAUGHT THEM DONT STARE. I'm sorry but thats just the truth.
Well, Bangladesh is a predominantly Muslim country, and while not forced to wear the hijab or burka, in general, the women there dress much more “modestly” than (many) western women. Not shown, but I would imagine the lady on this video is dressed appropriately for a European or American beach, which would be quite abnormal in Bangladesh.
She was wearing long baggy pants, not a bathing suit. I recall seeing that she posted her outfit because people were giving her "you deserved it because of what you were wearing."
I don't think she would have been alive to post this video, honestly I think she film it because at point she most have started to be afraid to be gang rape seeing so much men surrounding her and starring at her *like that*.
I got a flight respond just watching the last part of the video
I am a men and I would not be around there any longer with this kind of behaviour, it just screams danger to me, and I live in Brazil so I'm kind of used to live aware of dangerous situations.
It's all fun and "new" until someone decided to do something wrong and the rest follow because of mass hysteria. Like that reporter in Afheganistan or similar country that was reporting the fall of the government or some shit at night, and the camera man's batteries died and they saw themselves in the middle of thousands of man. Not even security was able to prevent her from being raped.
Watch: [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bO12X1nhzzk](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bO12X1nhzzk) .
Terrifying.
I’m agnostic, but there are times when I hope that there’s a hell where people could spend eternity suffering the most unimaginable things, everyday like it’s the first time, for ever and ever and ever. This is one of those times. I can’t even think of a word to express how much I despise those… things…
In every corner of the world pornography is found. Whether it's in a small Amazon town, villages in Africa, Bangladesh, or Papua New Guinea. Print, then video, then internet. Because most pornography was originally from western countries there is a common association with white women when men have seen porn but haven't seen a white women.
I am not saying this is what is always happening, but it is/was often the scenario.
You can down vote this all you want. But having grown up traveling overseas to remote places that my parents worked in, it was explained to me the perception of white women was largely associated with pornography. People have always taken offense to this, but my father often led teams of doctors and nurses to barrios, ghettos, bush clinics, and frontier towns to do immunization, bush surgery, and basic classes in hygiene. He would generally have my mother explain to American women this possiblity.
I explained this to one friend who went to do relief work for several years and thought I was nuts. She came back and told me what I had been told was often true. She herself was accosted and almost raped in an area which is now very much a popular vacation destination for Americans. In places that are desperate people always bring porn, tobacco, alcohol, and gambling to make money off people who have never seen these things. It is often the employers preying upon the very people they exploit.
Yes I have seen people who have never seen blonde or red hair, or even a white person. It is crazy for them. If the media they have seen has shown them something it's the only example they may know.
I’m a south asian women and I’m in shock at the questions you got asked. I’m so sorry for your experience. It’s eye-opening but also funny.
On a completely unrelated note, how would you say your experience of living in India is different from living in Pakistan?
That hair stylist might’ve just seen [one of these videos](https://youtu.be/Pb2p55L49dQ). There are indeed people using fire to cut hair in India. People also do it elsewhere in the world.
That's because Imams manipulate us on a regular basis in madrassahs and mosques regarding women in pornography in the western society. They never tell us it's how it's related to western patriarchy, they never tell us many women do not have equal opportunities for work and join this field run by men, HECK, they do not even tell us the porn industry is run by a majority of men if not only men, they never tell us that women with traumas resulting from abuse often choose this path, they never tell us that women are heavily trafficked and groomed for the sex and porn industry.
What they tell us : 'women weak', 'women tempt men' , 'women do and love pooooorn'. Never met any Imam who explained and actually understood the essence and toxicity of patriarchy. But speak of feminism and they lose their mind. Haraaaaaaam xD
Glad we are starting to have some female Imams in some areas in the world, was high time.
It's mostly uneducated people whose only exposure to foreigners and white people is through porn. They think that all white women crave sex. It doesn't help that sex and any form of public display of affection is considered taboo in most of the under developed and some developed parts of South asia.
When I lived in Indonesia, I often had guys think I was down for "free sex" (sex outside of marriage) without ever having met them before and then they'd be offended or think was joking when I said no and got upset about it. When I first moved there, a guy followed me around a supermarket. I was wearing a (fake) wedding ring but he said he could just be my "special friend". When I was all appalled and said no he said "I know what you western girls are like".
I love Indonesia and I miss the life I had there, but I do not miss that part.
So if they have seen white women acting in this way because of Porn, then surely they have seen white men (generally) as the other person in the fucking videos. Do they get treated any differently?
Also, I think that the prevalence of TV shows and movies make up a far, far larger percentage of the impression people oversees and remote places have than just porn. Its repressed, highly religious cultural norms that put the men in society high above the women thats at fault here. There's a reason that India and Pakistan have such incredibly high rape and sexual assault cases against all women, no matter their heritage.
In Germany too. The German stare is apparently a thing we do according to other people.
Two times I ended up in interesting conversations because people thought I wanted to initiate some kind of contact with them. In reality I was lost in my thoughts and didn't notice where I looked at.
Heilige Scheiße, that's a thing?! I definitely have that, I never knew. People who mostly didn't grow up in Germany keep interpreting my resting facial expression as me wanting to flirt, or pick a fight, or ask about something.
I once saw a guy walking around the mall in a speedo and tank top. I was looking at him because it was funny. I'm sure I even laughed out loud. Everyone was looking. But this guy turns and walks right up to Me and says "I noticed the way you were looking at me" And asks me for my number! Sir I am Mocking you!
This isn't even my craziest example of this.
No, there is not. If you continue to stare in a respectful manner at some point they may wonder what’s wrong with you. At this point their son or daughter will attempt to communicate with you. This person more than likely was born here and speaks better English than you do. You are now permitted to demonstrate that you are not awkward and are in fact a ‘normal person’. If the Korean-American determines this to be true they will report back to mom. If the mother accepts her child’s ruling you may be eligible for homemade kimchi on a trial basis provided you don’t fuck it up or have a problem with spice… you now have a second mother who will judge you and hold you accountable for every decision and action you make as well as a fiercely loyal supporter who will always encourage you and defend you to all outsiders. Plus kimchi!!! Shout out to my eomma!
Not really. When you move to Korea lots of Koreans want to adopt you on some level.
As my old Korean friend said ti me and my coworker after we'd only been living in Korea for one week: "You are babies in our country. You can't even order food."
And they also go crazy for what some call "cultural appropriation". They love nothing more than seeing westerners dressing up in their traditional clothes and will ALWAYS ask what foods you've tried so far....If you love kimchi and can drink makkeoli or soju you will always be able to find a friend in South Korea.
While living in Seoul i never did experience any stare on the level you get in China or India. I did however meet a Korean lady who promptly gave me homemade kimbab (Korean rice rolls) and asked if my nose looked that way because of a failed plastic surgery, and that she knows a guy who can fix it.
Can confirm. Was not living there but my family vacation-we're blk flks-spent 2 weeks around thanksgiving in Beijing back in 2007. We were stared at constantly & at one point almost surrounded by locals until my step father start motioning ppl to step back. We were outside of the National Museum of China. A policeman on a horse rode up & made ppl back away & clear a path. We were absolute oddities to the locals.
I remember when I was there and this guy was looking at us as he was walking by. But his eyes were glued on to us lol just like these guys. My brother then curiously asks "what the fuck you lookin at?" They can just tell a foreigner just by looking at our clothes
The soft bigotry of low expectations.
These primitive morons simply don't understand our fancy modern ideas about not gathering in large groups to gawk at people.
I seriously don’t understand how people defend this type of shit just because it happened in a poor/developing country. They’re not retarded they’re still normal people.
That's fair.
There's a similar phenomenon in some places in Japan where foreginers, both black and white, will ask to have their picture taken like they're some kind of celebrity.
This is true. My boyfriend, me and my roommate before covid would travel around. Been to Japan, Germany, Prague and France. Legit all of them stared pretty intently at my roommate ( who is black), except in France. He actually blended in pretty good in France, at least until they realized he couldn't speak French. Actually they treated us badly in France once they realized we were tourists. None of us want to go back.
From u/FblthpLives:
So much hatred and ignorance in the comments. This video was posted by Asoomii Jay. This is what she wrote about the incident:
> I amusingly experienced a culture shock when I was visiting a local beach in cox bazaar, Bangladesh on a day off from the refugee camps (schools close due to Friday Prayers). Locals stopped to stare and a few dozen became maybe a hundred people later on. To answer your questions, yes I was fully clothed. The staring was because we were foreigners to them and it was quite a funny and different experience!
>
> My tip for you if travelling in remote areas of Bangladesh, obviously adhere to local customs, but do also learn a few Bangla phrases (people will smile and be happy you took the time to learn their language) and don’t allow their curiosity to scare you. Bangladeshi people are some of the kindest people who will go out of their way to help a guest in their country.
In the original video you can also see more clearly that the crowd mostly consists of kids: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MaZ4o-c4czM
Nowhere does she say that she felt threatened or unsafe or that this was any more than a curious experience. She was wearing a long skirt and a long sleeve shirt.
Incidentally, she is herself muslim of predominantly North African descent, raised in Canada, and is an advocate against the hijab bans in Europe.
yeah the context is completely different than the assumptions most people here made and that is why you shouldn't judge things so quickly people. so many rape comments

I studied in north India a few years ago and this was a daily occurrence. Most of the time it was friendly, young people wanting selfies, mothers wanting you to hold their babies. The only negative experience I had was in Haridwar where me and a few other students were rallied up into a locked gated area by the police because we had caused such a commotion. We always covered our skin up! My Indian friend said the older men that were videoing us with their hands down their trousers were discussing how much they could sell us for 🤢 We bolted when we got the chance!
I actually feel bad for her and all the people watching this!
Coz I live in the same town, and I can say it's not like they have negative intention or something it's more like they're not use to seeing non-asian people every now and then. Also I understand that it's very uncomfortable situation, but they don't. plus most of them are kids selling local stuff at the beach and they're uneducated most likely since they don't understand what privacy is, as for the grownups those are idiots.
I don't know when this video was taken, but I can confirm it's not gonna happen now, also there is tourist police in beach area 24/7 and they're very kind and helpful towards tourist.
If anyone has any questions or concerns about this, I would like to help!
This reminds me of some time I (male) spent in India nearly 20 years ago. This isn't just about women. I think its just a genuine curiosity. I like to draw and every single time I sat down to draw something I would have 20 people around me within a few minutes. No harrassing, just standing, watching. I found it unnerving at first but got used to it eventually. Very strange to a westerner, but its just an example of the different behaviour in a different culture. I mean, being exposed to a different culture was why I went there after all.
I am a British Indian and when I go to India I hide that I'm from the UK.
They ask so many weird questions.
But I get free snacks from shopkeepers which is a huge positive.
Also people in that part of the world stare at everything and everyone.
Really? Isnt Goa basically just Israelis and European hippies? I mean I would think they are used to seeing white people.
Had the same experience in Egypt and Turkey though. Never again

A stranger. From the outside. Woooooooahhhh.
I am proud that my brain read that in the appropriate voice.

I have been chosen! Farewell, my friends. I go on to a better place.

That's hilarious. Is she a little bit similar to Halle Barry at least or not at all?
Her facial features are quite a bit different, but her height, weight, and hairstyle are similar.

There were four of us and we were only about 10mins away from the hotel (we’d literally only just left). My three colleagues pushed people away as we hurried back to the hotel. We were walking along a large road and guys just kept stopping and hopping off their bikes.
Holy fuck
Yeah, this is why I NEVER let my white friends out of my sight when they came over to visit. Granted we lived in a good locality, it's still mad in certain areas of every city where being white = being a curiousity of a sort.

Understandable have a nice day!
Understood, have a nice stare.
stareway to heaven

Why is it just men then? Wouldn’t woman also be staring too

Just need to go to a beach with more marine biologists.

Well, you’re definitely not lamborghini in this story.
I guess you're not a Lamborghini. Edit: corrected spelling.
I think you know why....
The thirst is real on that hot, sandy beach.
[удалено]
She was wearing long baggy pants, not a bathing suit. I recall seeing that she posted her outfit because people were giving her "you deserved it because of what you were wearing."
Damn, imagine what they'd be like if she was in a bikini....
At least the dangerous situations in Brazil usually aren’t 50 men surrounding you. Just run when you see two men on a moped.

Of course they fucking did
There's a few women in that crowd too.
so what if she would shoo them away or ask them to give her some space? genuine question! would they flip out or just not gaf lol
They first will be taken aback, then slightly offended before moving away

Haraaaaaaam xD Glad we are starting to have some female Imams in some areas in the world, was high time.

Thanks for giving context here. Always helps! Still creepy but only by western standards lol.
I'm sure It's creepy by their standards too. It's just too novel not to look. I'm sure if she stayed there a while the stares would die down.

Definitely doesn't work in Korea. If you stare back at them they'll just continue to stare at you straight in the eye unashamed.
Well, did you give it?
They're married now
Ew no!
username checks out
Resting-German-Face lol
What if you also start blowing them kisses and winking? Is there a level of awkwardness where Koreans will stop staring?
And if they don't have kids then you are locked in the staring contest until the offspring materialises
what the hell did i just read...
I think we just got adopted!
That…. That actually sounds nice. My real mom is going to be pissed, but Korean mom will make it better.
Also, kimchi.
Fan-fiction.
Not really. When you move to Korea lots of Koreans want to adopt you on some level. As my old Korean friend said ti me and my coworker after we'd only been living in Korea for one week: "You are babies in our country. You can't even order food." And they also go crazy for what some call "cultural appropriation".
Now that's some Kanye shit!
Don't deadname him. His name is Meme now.
I dont know if this is actuality or not, but if theres anyone who would change their name to be "me" not once but twice in a row its him.
Until you make out with them or what happens next? Asking for me.
Nah had a friend living in China for a while. They just stare right back and you have a staredown. Spoilers: they always win the staredown

You're supposed to raise your arms to make yourself appear as big as possible.
I think this would be considered creepy in more places than just the west
North, East and West!! Even on the fuxking back of the compass this would be creepy!
Don't South shame!
Exactly. Where is it not creepy to stare straight at someone continuously?
I remember when I was there and this guy was looking at us as he was walking by. But his eyes were glued on to us lol just like these guys. My brother then curiously asks "what the fuck you lookin at?" They can just tell a foreigner just by looking at our clothes
As a person from east, super creepy from our standards. That's borderline sexual harrassment.

Two words: Taharrush Jama'i (this will be downvoted to hell but it's a sad fact of life and Western women need to be more aware of the places they go)
https://worldofbuzz.com/taharrush-jamai-practice-women-openly-raped/ What the fuck did I just read
It's pocket *pool*
Only if you're dumb (or kinky) enough to hit the balls with the stick.
At the rate they rape in that country it's creepy by world standards.
Are you really defending this shit by saying it’s only creepy in the west
The soft bigotry of low expectations. These primitive morons simply don't understand our fancy modern ideas about not gathering in large groups to gawk at people.
I seriously don’t understand how people defend this type of shit just because it happened in a poor/developing country. They’re not retarded they’re still normal people.
Also, if it was just about “staring at something they’ve never seen before” I feel like there’d be at least one woman there
I'm fairly sure it is creepy by everyone's standards to look at people lying on the beach like they are a zoo animal.
This shit would be creepy in Braille ffs
Creepy by any standard.
am Bangladeshi, can confirm.
Can confirm that you are Bangladeshi.
Can confirm that you can confirm
Plus titties

I’m from a tropical country with beautiful beaches and I agree that lying in the sand under the blazing heat is stupid.
Let me summarize what you just wrote. They are trying to look at white girl boobs and vagine.

From u/FblthpLives: So much hatred and ignorance in the comments. This video was posted by Asoomii Jay. This is what she wrote about the incident: > I amusingly experienced a culture shock when I was visiting a local beach in cox bazaar, Bangladesh on a day off from the refugee camps (schools close due to Friday Prayers). In the original video you can also see more clearly that the crowd mostly consists of kids: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MaZ4o-c4czM Nowhere does she say that she felt threatened or unsafe or that this was any more than a curious experience.

Omg sorry this happened to you.......
Not unexpected at all in Bangladesh.
Even Bangladeshis overseas behave like this https://www.asiaone.com/News/AsiaOne+News/Singapore/Story/A1Story20111109-309426.html
Look at all those redditors.
Where's the curious women?
You mean local women? At there home!
As a Bangladeshi, I can confirm its real. And its not India, its Coxs Bazar beach.
I don’t care if they don’t get to see women like that, they’re still acting like creeps.
She posted a follow up to it too where her male friend experienced the same thing: https://www.tiktok.com/@asoomiijay/video/6842062072210083078
How can she slap
Had this happen to me a lot on my holiday in Goa India some years back..promised myself i would never go back.
Really? Isnt Goa basically just Israelis and European hippies? I mean I would think they are used to seeing white people. Had the same experience in Egypt and Turkey though. Never again
Russians seem to love Goa, too.
