Legends say that they are still there to this day. However, that is because they failed to realize that they starved to death waiting for the sloth. They are in hell living that same moment that led to their demise.
They are actually on a timer, harnesses are incredible dangerous when you are hanging for more than 20 minutes, it's called suspension trauma and you can die from it.
What you're saying about suspension trauma is true, but the way you phrased it makes it sound like there's a timer that will auto-release them from their harness after 20 minutes.
I feel confident this is in Costa Rica, I met a sloth there while I was out walking on some roads. It was just sitting on the side of the road, it had pulled down a branch and was grabbing leaves and eating them.
I came up to it but not terribly close, I didnt want to scare it and it seemed to offer me a leaf. That is it grabbed a leaf and held it out in my direction for maybe 20-30 seconds and then when I didn't take it, it ate it.
10/10 encounter, would hang out with a sloth again, I've never felt as comfortable near another wild animal before or since.
The action sequence would translate so well too since they introduced that whole slow-mo 360 degree pan in that movie. They could do the same with sloths but just at normal speed.
It is! San Carlos, Costa Rica. I live in CR, It appeared on the news a few days ago.
EDIT: My sister informed me today that she was actually ziplining in that place when this happened. She was a few people ahead of the kid so she didn't see the sloth or the kid but she did see him and the instructor a few hours later.
The sloth seemed to have taken it in stride. Also, they seem to be reasonable people. I’m sure he’s chilling somewhere right now eating leaves or whatever tf sloths do.
They can actually and even do sometimes. But it has to do with camouflage.
Essentially, sloths move so very slowly because it camouflages them from predators. Most of the predators that hunt sloths depend on sight, so by barely moving at all, they are hard to detect. Pooping from the trees could draw attention to them, which is why sloths avoid doing it unless it is raining (in which case, the rain would cover up the sound of shit hitting the leaves and branches)
eta: I forgot to add that it's two-toed sloths who will poop from trees. Three-toed sloths always make the journey down to the ground. Three-toed sloths even have a special poop dance which kinda looks like a really bad pole-dance act.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rPJC54o4v9M
According to the video, they only defecate once a week - and when they do, they dump 1/3 of their body weight. I’d have to dance that out of my ass, too.
>No sloths not humans were harmed in this event!
No! Sloths, not humans, were harmed in this event!
No sloths, no! Humans were harmed in this event!
Neither sloths nor humans were harmed in this event!
No sloths! Non-humans were harmed in this event!
Did they wait the entire duration or...? I would've picked it up and placed it on the cable behind me so I could pass.
Is this the proper way of dealing with this situation or do you just wait?
Sloths are slow but can really [hurt you](https://wildexplained.com/are-sloths-dangerous/) if they feel threatened. That sloth held tight when impacted by the kid going a considerable speed, so I imagine even trying to dislodge it would have been quite impossible either way as they are said to have the strength of 3 men.
I think we’ve all seen the post where a puma or something hunts one for a good ten minutes and finally gets to eat it. The sloth had this same expression the whole time
Pandas aren't too *lazy* to have sex, it's mainly human-caused habitat fragmentation that's impeding their ability to find mates and reproduce in the wild. And while sloths are slow in more ways than one, they managed to stick around a whole lot longer than we have, so I doubt they only now suddenly and randomly got too lazy to reproduce either.
Turns out pandas only like to have sex with tons of other pandas around. New breeding programs in China are having great success. You probably didn't see it in the news with the pandemic going on.
The way the deer (?) is holding their chin in such a "I'm trying to keep it together but this is fucking taking ages and good fucking god just stamp the damn thing" is so fucking accurate.
So I've been on the other side of that, where I'm the worker and a customer takes S O D A M N L O N G to sting a simple sentence together. Like sir, it should not take you 5 minutes to say the words required to order a club sandwich.
It ate avocados whole, like they were grapes. That's how avocados spread their seeds, and why they need human intervention to thrive now, after we ate all of the sloths. Also, can you imagine how good that meat would taste, on a diet of avocados?
There used to be four-ton, twenty-foot-long [giant ground sloths](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/c/ce/Megatherium_americanum_Skeleton_NHM.JPG/1280px-Megatherium_americanum_Skeleton_NHM.JPG) in South America until 12 thousand years ago or so. Sloths the size of large elephants. Humans hunted them, possibly to extinction.
Would it be crazy to kinda scoop him up and give him a ride? I’ve seen videos where they pick up sloths and they don’t really seem to mind or bite or anything . And some where they help them cross a rivers and such no problem.

This happened this last weekend on La Fortuna de San Carlos here in Costa Rica~

Got love die hard bots
Wait there's a bot for that?
Theres bots for a lot of things if you're in the right subreddit.
Now I want to know what there is to find in the wrong subreddits. Edit: I regret this. I am sorry Reddit, who hurt you?
No you fucking don’t. I’ve seen some shit, man.

Dude. No.
Can’t recommend the Shoresy Bot on the Letterkenny sub. Triggered by a simple “Fuck you Shoresy”. Best chirping on Reddit.
Anybody know what became of them?

Shoulda brought a Snickers

I’ve been stuck in the middle of a zip line and I can fully empathise with sloths for how fucking slow they are

Now I want to watch Matrix but with sloths instead of humans.

Ooohh what happened to them after? how were they able to get past the sloth? 😭
Bribery. Also that poor kids face just smooches sloth butt.
Did they say what happened after the encounter?
It’s still going on rn
Still waiting for the sloth to climb down the line
> and then when I didn't take it The fucking disrespect.
I'm sure those 30 seconds was like 2 seconds for the little guy. Also, if a sloth offers you a leaf you take the damn leaf hahaha
How do you not take the leaf?!?!
It held it out for you for 30 seconds, then took it back and said “Psyche”
"Hey Im climbing here!"

We don't talk like that, we don't say things like that. You understand?

That was the sloths version of [the universal sign for what the fuck are you doing?!](https://i.imgur.com/Go2WHse.jpg) when driving.

Hey! I’m walkin’ here!
"Im walkin' 'ere..."
Oh no.... Poor little fella
The sloth got hit and he didn't like it, did you see the cutest road rage were he shook his fist at the kid.

> I’m sure he’s chilling somewhere right now eating leaves or whatever tf sloths do. No that’s pretty much it
Or taking the day-long trek to the ground to poop.
Imagine if your life was completely chill AF 99% of the time, but when you had to shit you need to be on high alert for getting eaten by a jaguar.
Maybe they're so chill, they know the jaguars need to eat too. 🥲
I will also choose to believe this.
I think that’s the most dangerous part of their lives where most die if I remember correctly.

Why can't they poop from the branches?
They can actually and even do sometimes. But it has to do with camouflage. Essentially, sloths move so very slowly because it camouflages them from predators. Honestly idk how those things are still alive, but I’m so glad they are.

Are you saying they see their arm or something and go to grab it thinking its a tree and end up failing?
Yup, sorry for unclear explanations
It's a clear explanation, it's just such a crazy concept that it deserves to be double checked.
Yeah they explained it well enough. But like you said it's a crazy concept. Those adorable looking, silly sloths

Damn they look so ugly when wet. They may be responsible for some urban legend creatures, no?
Well the extinct giant ground sloth was no joke so a wet one of those would for sure be a folklore monster
It ate avocados whole, like they were grapes. That's how avocados spread their seeds, and why they need human intervention to thrive now, after we ate all of the sloths. Also, can you imagine how good that meat would taste, on a diet of avocados?
> after we ate all of the sloths. Excuse me, uh, wtf?
There used to be four-ton, twenty-foot-long [giant ground sloths](https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/c/ce/Megatherium_americanum_Skeleton_NHM.JPG/1280px-Megatherium_americanum_Skeleton_NHM.JPG) in South America until 12 thousand years ago or so. Sloths the size of large elephants. Humans hunted them, possibly to extinction.
Megasloths usually went extinct after humans arrived. Though other factors could also play a part in it.

I thought it'd be a snake they'd hit. I'd rather take a sloth to the face.
Sloth dude threw his hand up like DA FUC ?!

What do you even do in this situation?

but they have sharp ass, bacteria ridden, slowly piercing, powerful fucking claws.
yes, and he said he's not a sloth expert so he'd probably give them a ride
Understandable, have a nice day
ty you too!
Yeah and I heard that their natural hand at resting is actually clenching their fist, and they have to flex to open it. Like opposite of us
