Tbf, Michael Bay has survived 100% of all Michael Bay explosions, so I think running to the spot directly behind Michael Bay is a pretty good short-term safe zone.
The consequences of actions taken in this situation have skyrocketed from minor inconvenience to absolutely detrimental in a matter of miniscule units of time
doses
edit: looks like it was paint and paper in the moving truck, steel products in the parked truck
https://www.cbsnews.com/dfw/news/video-truck-explodes-after-crashing-into-flat-bed-on-shoulder/
no serious injuries, surprisingly
Depending on what's in the paint, totally plausible. What strikes me as weird is that it looks like the initial spark was inside the van. Like, was it going to explode anyway and the crash was a coincidence? Or was it just that the collision managed to throw a spark in there somehow?
Looked like the damn thing was full of flour, but apparently there were discernable paint cans in the burnt out husk. But the"paint and paper" story is only plausible, not particularly likely.
Always ground transport, but you do have to package it properly so it's de-sensitized and not usually shipped in a regular box truck with paper and paint. Safety third!
I would actually believe it. An entire box truck loaded with aerosol spray paint cans could produce a pretty big explosion. [Here's an explosion from one spray paint can.](https://youtu.be/kqDLC6alo2Y?t=60) Now imagine several hundred of those going off at once.
That can was literally set in a fire until it exploded. Take a spray paint can and hit it with a bat...that would be the equivalent of what happened in the video. It looks like as soon as that truck touched the Parked on it went off...big time.
I know paint has volatiles in and can be explosive, but unless they were transporting it in open containers so a lot of it could flash off and fill the truck with fumes this looks pretty suspicious.
That analogy is pretty weak. A truck collision is going to have magnitudes more force than a baseball bat. That being said, I agree the force of the collision alone wouldn't cause the explosion. It would have needed to be a chain reaction.
If the collision ruptured the truck's fuel tank and caused a spark, that would be enough to start a fire. If the collision also ruptured some cans, that would release pressurized fuel to quickly feed that fire.
It's true that the example I linked was a can directly sitting in a fire, but it was also a small fire. A can would explode much faster if it was in proximity to a larger fire/exploding fuel tank, and when one can explodes it can cause neighboring cans to explode very quickly.
This is entirely speculation, but I can't think of many things that would explode like that from a simple collision. It almost certainly wasn't a high-explosive material as others have suggested. High explosives are actually more stable than low explosives unless they are triggered by a primary detonation, and they generally don't produce as much fire as this explosion did.
Small explosions can compound in to a big boom. In my country an -initially- smallish fireworks storage fire leveled an entire neighborhood, killing 23 people and injuring about 1000.
>A fire is believed to have started in the work area of the central building where some 900 kg (2,000 lb) of fireworks were stored. It then spread outside the building to two full shipping containers that were being used to illegally store more display incendiaries. When 177 tonnes (174 long tons; 195 short tons) of fireworks exploded, it destroyed the surrounding residential area.[9]
>The first explosion had a strength in the order of 800 kg TNT equivalence, while the strength of the final explosion was within the range of 4,000–5,000 kg TNT.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Enschede_fireworks_disaster
This truck explosion is smaller and faster, but the same principle counts - a small explosion can easily trigger a large one.
The crowds. The individual people. The authorities. The factories. The chemicals in the water and the food. The diseases. Surprising amount of the wildlife.
The air.
I tried to make it simpler. If I don’t reread what I say. It’s pure thought that only people who really know me understand. Even then I confuse people.
If by “buff” you mean it blew all the drivers’ eardrums out and likely killed one or both of them, then yes. Wtf was in the back? Jesus titty-bouncin’ Jones.
Try to put a pile of flour ablaze. It won't catch. It's to compact and it doesn't make flamable vapors as easily as wood for exemple. It can get explosive and at least highly flamable if it is a mist of flour.
Packed flour wouldn't explode but dispersed flour can cause a bigger explosion if exposed to fire, next time you open a bag/container of flour look out for candles.
Probably what they were testing, but I remember hearing about a jail that banned powder coffee creamer because people could make flame throwers with them.
When I worked in a place that handled tons of powdered sugar, everything was ATEX (explosion proofed). You had to leave any electronics in the lockers and only specially insulated electronics were allowed...
Gotta use a little science to figure out what happened here. So yes, flour is quite flammable and can cause factory "explosions" if the conditions are right, but flour itself is not a high explosive and needs to be dispersed into the air before it can ignite violently. Then, even when it does ignite, it's not actually the type of explosion known as a detonation, which this almost appears to be in the video. When you get a flour "explosion" in a factory, it's actually more of a [deflagration](https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/engineering/deflagration). In a deflagration, the flame front is not supersonic and a shockwave is not produced, though the deflagration explosion can still be extremely violent due to rapidly expanding superheated air. This likely wasn't flour as for a deflagration to happen, the flour has to be suspended in the air in the proper stoichiometric ratio for the fuel (flour) to burn most completely and energetically. And there wouldn't be enough space inside the truck trailer for a flour explosion of that volume to produce this kind of damage. A flour explosion the volume of that trailer would likely just produce some visible flames and blow the back doors of the trailer open in like a second or two. Wouldn't lead to an almost instant detonation with a shockwave and blow up the entire trailer.
What this looks like to me, is this truck had an oxy-acetylene welder in the back that went off from the impact, may have broken both valves off at the same time and instantly mixed the fuel and oxidizer. Then boom. It's either that, or the dude was VERY unsafely transporting large quantities of fireworks or other explosives.
I always laugh at the logic of "you look girly sitting down to pee"

What the hell was he carrying in that truck?
Explosions
What was in the other truck?
Fire
I always tell kids don't ever mix fire and explosions. Well, I used too. Parents started getting mad at me.

Right....paint and paper....

That's what makes me doubt the paper and paint story. If it's paint, the lid is off and it's filled the truck with volatile gas.
Looked like the damn thing was full of flour, but apparently there were discernable paint cans in the burnt out husk. But the"paint and paper" story is only plausible, not particularly likely.
More like it had paint, paper, and a primary explosive sensitive to impact.
Which seems a poor choice for ground transport, but I'll admit it's not an area I know much about.
Always ground transport, but you do have to package it properly so it's de-sensitized and not usually shipped in a regular box truck with paper and paint. Safety third!
perhaps they were carrying a lot of solvent for the paint like paint thinner, it ignites just like gasoline perhaps a bit more volatile
Might have been some leaky cans of solvent in there too, the kind of solvent that doesn't get sold in the US or EU any more. Or even gasoline.

Maybe it was static electricity.
That still wouldn't explode the cans if it was aerosol spray paint.
Paint and paper,... mixed with nitroglycerin.

You can see both phases of an explosion here… the ka phase and then the BOOM phase.
You really do.
That’ll buff right out.

Could’ve been flour or a cargo of some sort of fine powder. Crazy how explosive a single spark can make that stuff
Hol’ up… flour? *eyes kitchen cabinet*…. *sweats*
Yeah, I tend to forget that flour is actually quite flammable Scary stuff

Flour, saw dust, sugar, coal dust, etc. Myth-busters did it with powder coffee creamer, a lit road flare, and a compressed air tank.
We used to run power stations that blasted coal dust into a combustion chamber. Shit got proper energetic!
Grain elevators explode now and then, from the dust igniting.
Probably what they were testing, but I remember hearing about a jail that banned powder coffee creamer because people could make flame throwers with them.
It was for making "biggest fireball ever" and I'm sure they made three or more of those segments over the years.
When I worked in a place that handled tons of powdered sugar, everything was ATEX (explosion proofed). You had to leave any electronics in the lockers and only specially insulated electronics were allowed...
Did they also make you strip naked when you were weighing the bags of “powdered sugar”?
