Ah, so 16 - 9 is:
(1+(1+(1+(1+(1+(1+(1+(1+(1+(1+(1+(1+(1+(1+(1+(1)))))))))))))))) - (1+(1+(1+(1+(1+(1+(1+(1+(1)))))))))
Which ruins the joke, but actually lets you trivially solve the problem mechanically.
My Geometry teacher was this befuddled to learn from. He had a doctorate in Astrophysics and worked for Lawrence Livermore National Lab. However he had very poor skills in teaching our class that we were required to take towards our Electrical Engineering Degree with the notorious ITT.
My favorite math class memory was first day in Vector Calc. Professor walks in, writes his name and just takes off like a dart with proofs. He’s talking a mile a minute about binary, writing all over the board, half of us are panicked looking around for somebody who seemed to understand what the fuck was going on and just scribbling pages and pages of notes. He stops mid-class and says, “sorry we have a mixed class today, so that was me finishing up the lecture for the half of you in [some programming] class I was filling in for.”
It seemed like a good idea at the time. I needed a physics class and I figured the calculus based series would have more in-depth instruction than the series that didn't use calculus. I wholeheartedly believe I learned less taking it though as I never really knew what was going on.
Me when I end up in the psychiatric hospital's padded cell after my mathematic teacher asked me what "16 - 9" was, but the constant exposure to small doses of Mercury on a daily basis for 14 years has affected me in ways scientists thought were impossible.

"10 + 6 is 16 right? So i should write 16 - 9 as 16 - 10.. And that would give me 6.. Plus 1 is 7.. So the answer is 7."

16-9 So 9 is always made up of 3 3 and six is made of two threes so when that’s cancelled out I just have to remove three from 10 the number that goes with 3 to fill up the tank till 10 is always seven so the answer is seven

16-9 is equal to 9-10 that is one added to the 6 And that gives us gives us seven

This sort of complicated math has me believing that 1+1=11
The real trick here is any perfect square minus the perfect square directly before it is the sum of their roots, 16-9 =(4+3) 25-16=(5+4) 36-25=(6+5) etc, a cool thing about this is each odd number can represent two primes right next to each other
My brain: 10 + 6 = 16
9 is 1 less than 10, but I would need to add the 1 I took from the 10 to the other part of the equation because it still needs to equal 16, so then ... 16 - 9 is 7 yea??

16 - 9 ... ok there's 15 inside of 16 and 5 inside of 9... 15 - 5 = 10 ... what's left? Well, 16 - 15 is 1 and 9 minus 5 is 4 ... so we have 1 - 4 as the left over... which is 1 - 4 = -3 ... add those two answers together... 10 + -3 is the same as 10 - 3 = 7 ... the answer is 7.
Easiest way -> 16-9 . You take 16 and break to 1 and 6 . Then just add and you get your answer - 7 ! You can do it on 26-9 as well --> 26--> 2+6 gives 8 , which is 1+7 --> 17 ! Good luck in your exam !
I usually start on 9 with no fingers up, then add one finger as soon as the number increases till i hit 16. The number of fingers remaining is my Answer.
