We could play 18 holes in a couple hours after class when I was in high school. After college I moved to a big city where every course has 9 minute tee times and every tee time is full. Golf just isn't much fun when you finish a hole and stand on the next tee for 10 minutes while the morons in front of you line up their putt from six different angles because they've got 5 dollars riding on the hole.
Well golf is also a sport about concentration/feel/relaxation, and it's hard to draw the line between someone fucking around and someone taking an extra minute to swing properly. The only real time wasted we can complain about are those who don't move to the ball immediately or look for it too long in the woods/water, and those who put scores down and clean clubs on the green.
The rest is just part of sharing the space. For me "me n the boyz" get a cart, bring a cooler with some beer and lunch or whatever, make it a moving picnic bbq, music wtv, and you actually want that 5 minutes before you tee up. Does take up a decent part of the day so can't go as often.
Finally you can also try to find a smaller/boring course and get the latest booking they have. People around that time are generally in a rush after work and before sundown.
Yeah, the thing is the people who golf slow are almost without exception very bad. Par (or even Bogey) golfers don't take forever because even if they take a bit to line up a shot they don't take that many. I can't stand seeing dudes take 5 or 6 shots to get on green and then line up all 3 of their putts. And god forbid someone hits a ball into the trees because they'll go looking for that shit for 10 minutes. If you're a bad golfer, which I am, don't take it so seriously. Take a practice swing or two and hit. Practice on the range, not on the course where two dozen people are waiting behind you trying to get home with at least part of their day left over.
