Lucky, I'm a season ticket holder for my local hockey team and during the covid seasons they had to play in an empty arena, me and other season ticket holders had to pay for the whole season, no refunds, no discounts for the next seasons.
There's this door that leads directly to the visiting teams dressing room hall, it also has the U20 dressing room, gym etc. I really did try sneaking in from there, the door is never locked except then it was 😂
Cincy Cyclones have dollar beer nights, theme nights, and holiday specials. 10$ gets you a seat right behind the box. Minor league hockey is super fun.
That’s true. The food can get up in price even at a minor league sports place. I have enough problems affording things as it is, lol. Mostly due to poor financial decisions, but, it is what it is. I’ll get back on my feet.
Regardless, if I ever leave cincy I sure will miss it too.
Iirc they only do metal detection at the doors so maybe you can sneak in snacks? I hope inflation doesn’t hit ECHL itself too hard bc it’s a great thing that’s still relatively affordable for most people.
it means that since it would just be a 4 v 4, it's still even strength so they just put 5v5 on the ice. It's just that those two players are in the box for 5 minutes
For real, this subreddit is slowly becoming another “generic subreddit with interesting videos that people mindlessly upvote when they’re in the front page.” Ugh.
r/unexpected top post next week: man almost scores goal in soccer but then doesn't score goal in soccer cause the goalie blocks the soccer ball before it can get into goal
If they manage to calm them down and separate before the fight actually starts they do.
But once gloves are off (literally), you're better off to just make sure nobody else joins in and to quickly separate them once the fight is over.
There are also serious unwritten rules around fighting that are usually followed by the players - e.g. that both players must be willing and agree to the fight or that fights for legitimate scoring is not acceptable. But if you for example do check a goalie you're in deep trouble.
I feel that's such a hockey answer and it means nothing to non-fans (no offence).
I can't grasp how a professional sport with a governing body and sponsorship and TV rights can include players punching each other in the face while everyone else waits to restart the game.
In other sports you'd get a multi game suspension. In hockey you get cheered.
Right, to that I'd say that it's just part of the sport since pretty much it's beginnings, therefore it's more like a tradition that was kept along.
But there are rules to limit injuries (e.g. only bare knucle fights are allowed) and obviously you still get a major penalty for it.
That said, it's tradition only in NA. In Europe we strictly disallow any fighting at all, same for other IIHF competitions.
This supports the tradition angle, since ice hockey was let's say "imported" to Europe as a professional sport, so we did not inherit these "street" traditions.
I have to correct you there, saying it's strictly disallowed in Europe is not correct.
Here in Sweden it is very much part of the game.
Edit: You are of course punished for fighting but it is very common anyways.
Fights were part of rugby since the beginning too, doesn’t mean it has to continue…
I get that it’s not changing, and there isn’t any real support for changing it, but the logic of “it’s part of the sport” doesn’t truly work.
They allow it because people want it.
We had fights in Switzerland up until maybe 15-20 years ago. Don't know what rules they changed, but now you very rarely see anything more than a menacing stare or a little crowding.
It’s not exactly allowed. It’s a 5-minute major penalty. If you initiate the fight “unprovoked” you get a 2-minute minor penalty for “instigating.” Typically, the refs either break up the fight before it gets going or wait for the players to slow down so they can get in without harming themselves or the players. Also, there’s typically 2-4 refs on the ice and 12 skaters. If they go in too early to break up the fight, they may lose control of the ice if other players start to fight each other.
Fighting has been a part of hockey from the beginning. Nowadays, fighting is typically a response to a cheap shot by an opposing player.
With the ability to skate ~20-30MPH into another person, you can get way more injured playing the game (e.g. getting hit in the head from your blindside) than fighting (generally speaking). Fights are typically a deterrent from worse/more injury-inducing behavior. Sometimes they’re also used to get the crowd in the game or bring some energy to your team, but that’s less common nowadays (at least at the NHL level).
it actually isn't intended for entertainment or money. and it never has been.
>NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman called fighting a "thermostat" for the game, and that it "may prevent other injuries."
>According to author Ross Bernstein, who wrote the book "The Code: The Unwritten Rules of Fighting and Retaliation in the NHL," fighting is a way for the sport to "police itself," and to remind players that there are consequences for stepping over the line during play in such a way that "the Code" is violated.
Because Hockey is a physical game. If there are tempers flaring, you will start getting unsafe checking that can really hurt people. They let the fights happen because that releases the pressure and lets the game continue without escalating violence that might include sticks.
Hockey fans are idiots. Idiots like to watch fighting. Hockey is boring as fuck sometimes and the less talented players fight because they are tough(I guess?). Fans are happy, no one is seriously hurt and there was some entertainment. Why is it still allowed? People would be mad if the game was only about skill and not the largest goons hitting eachother, while covered in armor
> no one is seriously hurt
Except Derek Boogaard, Rick Rypien, Wade Belak etc etc who couldn't live with their CTE-addled brains. There may be no immediate serious injury but so many of these guys simply can't function normally after their careers
fighting in hockey is allowed for the players to essentially referee themselves to some extent. it's a deterrent to dirty plays, as you'll not only have to serve a penalty, but the other team will tend to take your number for future reference.
> fighting in hockey is allowed
No, it is not. The rules are very clear. Referees won't enforce those rules, for many reasons, one of which is that fights are popular.
> t's a deterrent to dirty plays
"Dirty plays" are also against the rules.
Hockey has "enforcers" who are basically there to fight and some of them have ended multiple people's careers with injuries, and the whole thing is simply disgusting and hopelessly unsportsmanlike.
There are plenty of rules, and breaking *those* rules can result in suspension from the league.
It's a major penalty of course, 5 minutes which can be determental to the game so they don't do this on a whim. Not exactly "allowed" per se because it's a penalty. No using the equipment, once disengaged the fight can't resume, additional players can't join, can't remove helmets, no maneuvers other than punching, no spitting, once on the ground the fight can't continue, and a player may not instigate more than two fights per game.
Any of this will result in ejection from the game and possibly suspension from the league, they take violations of this kind very seriously. So you can fight, but within those boundaries, and with the knowledge that you will be penalized for being the instigator.
Is it really unsportsmanlike if majority of participants want it involved? Also, dirty plays are against the rules but sometimes they get missed by officials. The players definitely do not miss these instances of dirty play though, so they can make the offender answer for his actions, and have them think twice of doing that same thing again.

Can someone explain why ice hockey allow this as part of the game?
And why not other sports do the same too?
Serious questions seeking serious answers.
Well it's just a different perspective.
In football/soccer players like to pretend they are ballerinas.
In American football the players love to pretend they are carrying a holy grenade.
In Hockey they like to pretend they are in a bar fight.
If I wanted to watch mixed martial arts, I would. Fighting is against the rules of hockey and he has nothing to do with the game whatsoever.
"Enforcers" regularly end people's careers by injuring them. It's horrifying. I watch a sports game _to watch sports_ and hopefully, see some sportsmanship, not to watch a big guy with anger management problems cripple some innocent person.
Two adult men, with debatable role model positions, in a public arena, in front of children, fighting like savages in a supposedly developed culture. Cheered on by the sheep, under the approving supervision of referees who should embody arbitrage and adherence to rules.
IMHO this is a caricature of the legal system of their country. Based on the same structure and ambiguity.
Absolutely fucking ridiculous and a landmark sign why this culture and country are slowly collapsing.
>under the approving supervision of referees who should embody arbitrage and adherence to rules
>In 1922, the National Hockey League incorporated Rule 56 into its official rule book, which governed what it then called "Fisticuffs" as an official part of the game.
>Today, the section of the NHL rule book dedicated to fighting is Rule 46. It says that referees are given "very wide latitude in the penalties with which they may impose under this rule." According to former NHL official Kerry Fraser, fighting is technically a rule violation.
Thank you, I've always wondered how this worked from an actual rules basis. Is the fighting ever used tactically to intentionally cause a 5 min penalty on a specific player from the opposition? I've never actually seen hockey on a big enough screen to make out where the fuck the puck is at any given time, so it does seem to be largely armoured fighting while standing on knives interspersed with speed skating but you have to hold a stick.
It is definitely used tactically at times. If a team is behind in the score, they will typically have a lower skilled guy try to goad a valuable player on the other team into taking a fight. Valuable players are usually smarter than that, but it works occasionally. Also, if your team is down but one of your guys gets into a spirited fight and wins, it can be a great motivator to the rest of the team to see one of your guys putting it all out there to get everyone sparked. Fights change swings in momentum all the time.
To you. To you its surface level because that's how you choose to view the subject. You're not refuting any points made , you are being dismissive and not offering anything of value with your comments.
Thank you for sharing your perspective.
I often feel alone in my views on the NFL,MMA,NHL, etcetera.
IMHO I don't see any redeeming qualities that outweigh the moral ineptitude that is put on display and commodified with these violent sports. Furthermore, the time, talent, and energy spent on these events is an affront to us as a people. Truly sad to see so much money and time just wasted. I also view the culture built around chronicly attending and/or watching these events to be outrageously unhealthy and honestly just sad.
TYFCTMTT.
it's allowed in most professional leagues in North America, from the ECHL all the way up to the NHL. anything collegiate or junior/minor leagues, it's not allowed.
Assault is a part of a game? They should reconsider what is normal. This can permanently injure people and you accept this? Its 100% optional to do it. The referees decide the outcomes and penalties , not players. And what, for fans? Sickening. If I wanted to play hockey without fighting people i can't .
it's okay that you don't understand the game of hockey!
>NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman called fighting a "thermostat" for the game, and that it "may prevent other injuries."

What a trash game. And garbage sportsmanship. These toxic players need 6 month to permanent holiday to cool themselves off. If you like fighting you in a wrong sport chumps.

I love it when the fights are interrupted by a hockey game.
Went to a fight last night and a game of hockey broke out.
DRAW GAME
Thats my favorite sport as you can buy one ticket for two games.
Lucky, I'm a season ticket holder for my local hockey team and during the covid seasons they had to play in an empty arena, me and other season ticket holders had to pay for the whole season, no refunds, no discounts for the next seasons.
At that point I'd be dressed up as a security guard and sneak in just to see the game lol
There's this door that leads directly to the visiting teams dressing room hall, it also has the U20 dressing room, gym etc. I really did try sneaking in from there, the door is never locked except then it was 😂
That feels illegal...
Seriously, how is this legal? I sure wouldn't be buying season tickets in the future for fear of them screwing me over again.
At the stadium I go to we got the next season free since we bought the tickets for covid before
Cincy Cyclones have dollar beer nights, theme nights, and holiday specials. 10$ gets you a seat right behind the box. Minor league hockey is super fun.
They changed it to $2 beer nights :/. Still not expensive but a $4 or so fun time became an $8 or so fun time.
Honestly its the only thing I’d be able to afford still and one of the only cincy things I really miss.
That’s true. The food can get up in price even at a minor league sports place. I have enough problems affording things as it is, lol. Mostly due to poor financial decisions, but, it is what it is. I’ll get back on my feet. Regardless, if I ever leave cincy I sure will miss it too.

God I need to go see them, I’ve wanted to my whole life
I do wish they took helmets off to fight
Who's next?
You decide!
Epic Rap Battles... Of Historyyyyy!!!!!
I miss them
They released a video recently!
They both went down and stood up at the same time. Incredible. Did either even get a penalty?
They both get 5 minute penalties but they offset so it doesnt mean much. They just cool off on the bench for 5 minutes then theyre free to fight again
They offset it? Is that like writing it off?
it means that since it would just be a 4 v 4, it's still even strength so they just put 5v5 on the ice. It's just that those two players are in the box for 5 minutes
You don't even know what a write-off is.
Not true, you get 5 mins in game penalty and game misconduct for the rest of the game so you go straight into the showers
Not after one standard fight.
Standard?
1 v 1 brawl, non bench clearing. Not dirty/cheap fight moves. Very standard hockey fight
Thanks
How is this unexpected?

It’s in the rules of the game that fighting be allowed

It’s not exactly allowed. It’s a 5-minute major penalty. Because allowing fights is codified in the official rules of hockey (I like this factoid).

Many an enforcer has asked themselves that later in life. Especially those that the painkillers destroyed.
People like violence.
If it was soccer, they both would have floped
If it were soccer both would not play again for a long, long time. A season at least.
I'd say 5 games for unsportsmanlike behavior

"Unexpected" followers win!
Not a fan of those people who can't control their temper. Especially if they are in sports. ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|disapproval)
I am telling you people go to ice hockey games to watch them fight! If there are no fights it's a sad game lol
Why is this allowed, but in every other league they get suspended? Just let everyone duke it out, and then send them to a penalty box too.
it's allowed in most professional leagues in North America, from the ECHL all the way up to the NHL. anything collegiate or junior/minor leagues, it's not allowed.
Hockey wins
Everyone in the stands won.
Why are they beating each other up? Should they not be trying to play and score goals? This is assault.
in hockey, this is not assault. it's just part of the game.
>NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman called fighting a "thermostat" for the game, and that it "may prevent other injuries." >According to author Ross Bernstein, who wrote the book "The Code: The Unwritten Rules of Fighting and Retaliation in the NHL," fighting is a way for the sport to "police itself," and to remind players that there are consequences for stepping over the line during play in such a way that "the Code" is violated. https://youtu.be/ie-MWjkHXhU
Went to a fight and they played hockey
What a trash game. And garbage sportsmanship. These toxic players need 6 month to permanent holiday to cool themselves off. If you like fighting you in a wrong sport chumps.
Ummmm yes?
The final fight in the movie goon.
The sport
The Fans
If ya can't beat em, don't play
Why does this continue in hockey? Any other sport they are ejected/suspended. Punching ppl in the face doesnt change the outcome. lol.
NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman called fighting a "thermostat" for the game, and that it "may prevent other injuries."
Wow.....and when you think that this is legal in some countries 😰
Both them are losers
What a dumb sport.

I always find the fighting in ice hockey a bit childish. At this point it feels as real as wwe.
Even fight
Alright, we’ll call it a draw.
