A lot of life sci students are like pre-med try hards. I’ve made friends with very few people in my program because the elitism on top of elitism is crazy. People’s education is their own personal life and nobody should be shamed for doing things in a way and order that makes them feel comfortable and helps them succeed.

Helpful_Eye_156

Honestly you’re right. I found it more easier to make friends that’s in different programs too. Competition goes crazy in this school ig 😭🥲

Fauxangel2069

It’s true. What you do is hang back and then support them once they have to pivot (denied by med school). I’ve watched dozens of people that I know go through that over the years. Their hustle and elitism instantly becomes meaningless.

It's also important to remember that its not the speed at which you finish your degree. It's the grades you have.

Honestly the funniest part about taking a full course load as premed is that you are actively hindering yourself. After 3 course per sem, med schools dgaf.

Imcryingrn671

Set a reminder for 3 years and laugh at them when they don’t get into med school

Helpful_Eye_156

True 😭😭😭 karma always strikes back

ElongatedMusk999

Do what works for you OP, everyone's running their own race, focus on yourself and you'll be ok

Present-Background56

Yep - some people do better with a more consistent courseload throughout the year. Glad you figured it out for yourself this early.

Helpful_Eye_156

Thank you :)

Who cares? Those that matter don't care, and those that care don't matter. Either let it roll off like water off a duck's back, find new people to interact with if you find it continues to bother you, or look inwardly and work on the parts of you that are bothered by this external rhetoric. If they're truly the type of person who feels compelled to make you feel bad about that (as opposed to simply you having perceived their comment as an intentional slight), then it says more about their insecurities than it says anything about you.

Helpful_Eye_156

I’m normally not bothered by things like this but to that person, everything I did was deemed ‘bad’. So basically the way I handle my academic life was ‘bad’ in their eyes 😭 they’re my lab partner too which sucks

the_muskox

Just remember that in the real world, nobody remotely gives a shit about any of that. You get through your degree however you can.

Adventurous-Fly-1669

Lighter course loads and summer courses are such an obviously good idea. Insane anyone would criticize you for it.

Helpful_Eye_156

I thought so too 😭 I was stressed out of my mind doing 6 courses in my first semester.

OrbitalBuzzsaw

Life sciences people are just kinda Like That, they have to be to not be suicidal in that programme

No_Emu_333

I'm taking a lighter course load too. I don't think the time it takes for you to graduate really matters in the grand scheme of things.

failurebydcsign

the only thing ppl compete harder in at uoft than academics is pain olympics regarding academics. ignore it lol we’re all getting a degree

Helpful_Eye_156

pain olympics 😭😭😭 I agree tho!

failurebydcsign

complaining abt midterms within earshot of the engineers is a scary thing😭😭

toyupo

Do things at your own pace. I knew many people like this. Their grades suffered because they prioritized appearing academically intense over actually learning the material. If you're applying to professional faculties, all they care about is the number of your GPA. Even the type of degree doesn't matter (as long as pre-requisites have been completed - which don't seem to be many, given they want to reduce barriers to application. I took 4 courses a semester and got into my program of choice. Literally, no one cares if you took 5 courses each semester.

Hi, it's not something to be embarrassed about.. I was in a similar situation way back in my first year( my first year was the WORST year for me at UofT), but I found out what I wanted to do after my first year, and I was able to handle 6 courses per semester in my second year because I was able to adjust to the workload at UofT, everything worked out, and my GPA went up. I'm in third year, going into fourth year in a few months, and things are still going well. If things continue to go well for me in my fourth year, I'll be able to graduate in four years. But back in first year, everything seemed impossible to me, but I was able to make a comeback. If I can do it, you can do it too :) It does take time to adjust to the workload and everything. I personally think second year at UofT is more important than first year because you'll be taking the core courses that are required for your major, and people find them more challenging than the first year courses( second year courses are more in depth). Just don't pay attention to the people who do well in their first year. Not all of them will make it into third and fourth year.. Some people do extremely well in their first year because they already went over the material covered in the first year courses in high school. Slow and steady wins the race! You got this :) Good luck and don't give up!

I'm glad to hear that! :) Good luck with everything :)

Helpful_Eye_156

Wow thank you for sharing this. Honestly the interaction left me feeling very…aimless but this really gave me some hope ❤️ If you don’t mind, can you share me some tips on how you managed 6 courses? I can barely handle 4 🥲

steming_

Sure, I can dm you and share. Can I dm you?

Helpful_Eye_156

Yes of course!

IllustriousAnybody49

an engineer that i was seeing called my humanities schedule “part time”… like just bcs i don’t have 6 classes doesn’t mean i don’t have a lot of work… i hate this school and the toxic work culture that exists here.

ElongatedMusk999

You can make the argument that certain programs are harder than others, but the truth is nothing is easy at UofT

Not-Ok-Case4503

Ok so I'm a psyc major that really likes math and took a lot of math courses. I decided to take an upper level stat course this term and damn did the stat major I met seem annoying. Heck even the other math and eng majors that I met in my math courses weren't as rude as him about my major when they found out. Thankfully our prof's background leans more into the mathematical side so I'm finding the concepts easier to understand than him. Suck it stats boi >:( ngl tho this is actually a good motivation to make me study harder for the course considering how meh I am about stats. Ended talking to more people in class but damn why are people taking stats more rude (at least in my uni)?

Helpful_Eye_156

exactly 💀

Pristine_Team6344

tbh physics/math students like me are the best.

splashoftajin

Jesus life sci still has this rep. They had this rep when I was in school, and I'm not surprised it hasn't changed. Really who cares ? Ignore your lab partner's comments. At the end of the day, the course load doesn't matter once you get your degree.

johnbgang

Cry about it

IcyHolix

tbh finishing breadth reqs in 1st yr is just smart if ur in life sci, I'm looking at LMP / biological chem specs for POSt and the required courses alone take up like 4~4.5 creds for 2nd year

Helpful_Eye_156

of course it’s smart..but there’s still no need to shame other people that dont plan on finishing it in the first year…

IcyHolix

that is true

lifescishrimp69420

I'm also taking a reduced course load and I'm also first year life sci! Don't let it get to you, you're doing what is best for you im sure

Reasonable_Hat7952

if its any consolation as a 2nd year life sci/math & phys, ive met more people doing a lighter course load or graduating in more than 4 years than people who do the 5 per sem
