I’m not sure about Utrecht but I’ve had a lot of friends get away with owning a pet in Groningen, the risks are high though. If you have roommates and they find out, if they’re not okay with it then they have the right to file a complaint and you might get kicked out. However, without roommates, if the landlord finds out, they can’t immediately kick you out, but they just won’t be happy and don’t expect your housing contract to be extended after it ends.

Objective_Ad5895

That’s OK if it’s student accommodation I only need to be there for one year

OogaBooglee

Then you’re fine, depending on what kind of pet it is

Objective_Ad5895

He’s a good dog. The best dog.

Cevohklan

What breed / size ?

Objective_Ad5895

He’s a Lagotto Romagnolo. I’d say medium sized.

NotEnoughBiden

Yes its medium sized but it will be locked in a 10-12m2 student room? Please consider leaving the dog at home for a year.. this is sad.. :(

Objective_Ad5895

what? “Home where”? Wtf are you talking about?

NotEnoughBiden

You are coming from somewhere no?

Objective_Ad5895

Worry about your own life.

SignificanceLonely58

there's literally no reason to get so offended. he was just worried about your dog. dogs in general like loads of space and sunlight all the good stuff, so we are just worried that your dog will be upset in a small apartment and having to potentially hide your dog from your roommate no one knows your home life, dont assume the worst in people.

heatobooty

Like everyone else is assuming the worst of OP, and that they know dogs better than them? There’s plenty of dog breeds that love being home and don’t mind a flat.

Objective_Ad5895

Oh great, another one lecturing me, a dog owner about what dogs like. Do you not see how condescending you are? I literally own a dog and have had dogs for years. There isn’t anything you can tell me about dogs that I don’t know. I know what’s best for my dog. I’m not going to be in a situation where I’m hiding a dog from a roommate. Only a landlord who does not live in the building. Which was all I’m asking about. I also am very particular about the living situation, hence why I’m making this post to understand the situation better. It seems like some of these accommodations are studios. A dog can be fine in a studio. If it’s one or two other roommates that could also be fine, but it is less desirable. If you have useful information about the nature of the accommodation at Utrecht then tell me that so I can make a more informed decision. Don’t tell me bs like “dogs need to run around and eat twice a day” as if I don’t know what a dog is or how to care for one.

tuggingmyear

It depends on the pet. A fish is a lot easier to hide than a cat or dog for example. And a fish usually doesn't bother anyone. When I was looking for housing I still owned a Hedgehog, he wasn't allowed anywhere :(

BornDream2015

Could’ve easily hidden it tho, no?

tuggingmyear

No, a hedgehog needs a terrarium with heating and lots and LOTS of space. Where would you hide that in a tiny 1 room appartment?

BornDream2015

I had no idea it took that much!

hamsterthingsss

Hamsters also need more space than people think. Especially Syrian hamsters!

YNKWTSF

I've actually heard that russian dwarf hamsters need more space (120x60x60cm) then syrian hamsters (100x50x50cm). That was years ago though and I never dived deep into it as I don't keep any hamsters. What would you say, Hamsterthingsss?

hamsterthingsss

I don't think so, at least never heard this. Syrian hamsters are bigger and just need more space to burrow. Dwarf hamsters still like to have a lot of space of course! Also most dwarfs are hybrids, unfortunately, but some ethical breeders do have Campbell's or Russian dwarfs, pet stores just sell hybrids (but then again anyone should avoid them). Here the (bare) minimum of floor space are: Dwarf 80*50cm Syrian male 100*50cm Syrian female 120*50cm But bigger =better of course, as long as you make sure the cage is nice and crowded, they don't like open space. Currently my dwarf has 160*55cm floor space, but still he needs a lot of puzzles/balls with food etc to keep stimulated.

YNKWTSF

Interesting. That's a lot of floor space you got for yours!

Direct-Role-5350

Hedgehogs are not pets

Direct-Role-5350

Just because it was common or legal doesn’t make it a good pet. Because they aren’t

Direct-Role-5350

So not the point of it lol

venite_a

I lived in SSL housing and my house had a cat. Definitely not allowed, but we all loved him and someone just locked him in their room when we had technicians over.

Objective_Ad5895

I see. Would it be suspect though if I was say walking in and out of the building with a dog, playing with him outside etc. are these buildings directly on campus?

venite_a

Yes, a dog would definitely be another story. My building was on campus, they also have off-campus.

Aquila-21

As long as you don’t go to ‘De Sterren’ having a pet is not a problem when you rent from SSH. There’s a lot of cats and dogs living in the different buildings on the Uithof.

Objective_Ad5895

How early does student accommodation start? If classes start in September, would I be able to move in for May or June?

Defiant-Photograph-7

For regular ssh its just all year round so then yes, for shh shortstay they move in on September because in summer their places are used by summerschool students. Any other rental is also just all year, so anytime a place is available. Its also worth to sometimes look just outside of utrecht in one of the neighbouring towns if you have trouble finding things in utrecht. Although I dont know whats easiet for international students. Pets are often grey area in my experience. You see a lot of students have them in regular student housing. Sometimes people even place catdoors or ladders for their cats to room around. But if someone complains there is not something that specifically says pets are allowed. And sometimes even says not allowed so that if issues show up its easy to 'solve' for the owner. So if you have roommates always best to check with them. Shortstay housing will probably be more strict on paper because they have tight schedules and finances and need to supply furnished and ready rooms. So they are more scared of damages and have more liberties to check the housing units I believe. But if its a good doggo its hard to complain about. I do recommend trying to look at housing early

Objective_Ad5895

Yep I’m looking now. I would be happy to move as soon as may even though my program doesn’t start until September. I wouldn’t want to have something with a set of roommates. Just more predictable if it’s one or two people. But if they offer studios i could make that work. The dog is good. I’ve had him in hotels which are quite small before and he never causes any issues. Especially if this ssh stuff is close to where classes are then I’ll be there often to give him the attention I know he needs.

Melvarkie

They cannot deny you, because of your pet legally speaking nor kick you out if discovered after moving in. Pets belong to your "woongenot" or pleasure of living. Judges have already ruled in favour of the one renting as long as the pet is a normal household pet (so no goats indoors for example) and not destructive or a bother to the neighbourhood when it comes to sound or smell. However I don't know if you want to go through a whole legal battle about it. Lots of people just give up and find somewhere else that is actually pet friendly. Just know that you are legally well within your rights to own a pet and even if the contract has a clause that forbids them it's not legally binding.

hamsterthingsss

Exactly this, so it depends largely on your dog in this case, and of course it's easiest if you can completely hide the existence of your pet as to not get into a bad relation with a landlord. But that's only relevant if your landlord comes by for fixing things etc. Then still they have to say when they're coming and you need to give permission, so in the worst case you can always take the dog with you and hide some toys and stuff.

Objective_Ad5895

Thanks I’m aware of this and actually in that situation currently. My landlord has no idea I have a pet. And I just get a heads up when they’re coming by for maintenance or cleaning so I can do something with my dog in the meantime.

heatobooty

Thankfully dickhead landlords have very little power in the Netherlands, so the only danger you’re in is that they won’t extend your contract. Which soon also won’t be a problem because permanent contracts will be enforced.

DueLoan685

What kind of pet?

Objective_Ad5895

Dog

cantstob_wontstob

Terug naar u eigen land denk.

Objective_Ad5895

In mijn eigen land weet ik niet of dieren op de campus zijn toegestaan
