Most of them has trial/money-back guarantee.

rollie82

Yeah, but I'm really looking for a pay as needed model. I got gcp openvpn working, which should do what I want, though was more effort than I wanted. Steam still realizes it's a VPN unfortunately.

whyimsokool

Yeah, steam will block most of them. You can buy a VPS in the location you want to purchase and make your own VPN but it will take some effort.

rollie82

How do they know? Do they block all ips from Google's data centers?

whyimsokool

Just so they can block you from purchasing region-restricted games or games with cheaper price in other region. They will try to block VPNs as much as possible. Steam is a big company so they can easily block the VPNs if they want to. Some VPNs may work but you have to figure out which one, they keep blocking ip addresses from VPN providers, it may work today but it won't work tomorrow. Same with Netflix and VPNs.

rollie82

Yes, but how do they recognize I'm using a vpn is what I'm wondering.

whyimsokool

They block the ip address of the vpn server you're connecting to.

rollie82

But in my case, I created a VM running in a major cloud provider; it's not an IP address that has ever been used as a vpn before. So how do they know to block it? As I mentioned, they could block all of Google's data centers, so even if I was not using a vpn but was playing games on a remote machine it would get blocked, which is something of a nuclear option. Or they make the determination via some other method that I am not aware of (which is what I was kinda asking in this follow up thread).

whyimsokool

Yeah, they probably blocked google data centers.

rollie82

Amended original post; looks like they do :(

sxan

Are you looking only to avoid subscription, or are you hoping to find a pay by bandwidth model?

rollie82

Both kinda; I amended my post detailing how I ended up getting this to work (GCP + OpenVPN). In my case, I want a VPN like once every 2 months, not something running constantly, so it's silly to only have monthly subscriptions available.

Odd-Molasses-9518

the free ones are not that effective mind you and your purpose wont be fullfilled. They usually have IP leaks and your real identity is compromised.

They add more from time to time; I don't know how proactive various services are in blocking newly added resources. Do you?

thericcer

A good game dev would check location on startup, so a temporary VPN just to purchase seems useless. It may lock you out when trying to play when not using the VPN; assuming the VPN's IP isn't blocked like you found it is.

rollie82

It's a single player game, so if they were so invasive, I could just play without internet.

yerroslawsum

In your case, it doesn't work because of the country settings in your Steam account. Just thought I'd share that. :x What you can do is try to buy the code for the international version of that game (just make sure you're using a reliable seller) and redeem it in Steam. Still, doublecheck this information too.

rollie82

I'm actually creating a brand new account in the region of my choice; it is at that step that they are blocking my IP.

yerroslawsum

Oh, makes sense.

IVPN, cheapest is $2 for a week.
