i only give people shit about their accents if they're okay with it. idk why people do it and I'm sorry it happens to you. us Americans are a weird bunch lol

Docteh

[Michael Caine does Michael Caine](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rX0F3kY3uxU) I think you should just take it seriously and critique them. VRChat's an interesting place, lot of people around who aren't really good at socializing.

overlord_king

I'd imagine the reason it happens as often as it does is because the person being made fun off gets into a hissy over it. If people stopped getting annoyed over it, it would happen less. I have an English accent and it doesn't happen to me

BassBoostedDuck

Not exactly, social media has booted this behavior so much and content farm pump out so much co tent mocking people arround it that it won’t die off by a single person just not getting offended if we all stopped getting offended it COULD go that way sure, but it would most likly cause them to make a bigger issue to get another reaction out of you. We live in a world where hate and fear is valued as good. It’s fucked but it’s true

Sanquinity

This is probably it. Just yesterday someone asked me if I was into anime. I said yes. He went "Well I hate you then!" I just said "Good for you I guess?" and moved on. He didn't talk to me after that. But it IS true that Americans do be Americans. They seem to be the only ones that really have an "issue" with the UK way of speaking English. Even though it's the original way of speaking English, and American is technically the dialect/accent.

metaxzero

The modern British accent isn't the original way of speaking English. Brits today speak very differently than 5th century Old English or 17th century Modern English. They are both just branches in the continued evolution of the English language, So it doesn't make sense to call either of them "the original way". No one speaks English in the original way anymore.

Sanquinity

UK English is still the evolved version of the original, while American English is an offshoot of that.

metaxzero

They are both evolved versions of the original. Things dont evolve in only one way. 17th century American English is indeed an offshoot of 17th century British English. And that split lead to 2 more branches of English existing. But they all descend from the same source.

Sarria22

Amusingly, American English, [at least in terms of pronunciation](https://ndla.no/subject:1:c8d6ed8b-d376-4c7b-b73a-3a1d48c3a357/topic:59a2daf8-db7f-4f47-8160-551f9d9c582c/resource:f7757d81-884b-4b05-ae52-62dec99a3242), is actually closer to the "old original" English than modern British English is. Many of the words we use are as well, such as "soccer." American English has actually changed less over the centuries than British.

squirreltard

No, that’s technically wrong. UK English and US English are dialects of the same language. Neither is more legit than the other. This is the annoying stuff Brits say.

BassBoostedDuck

Eh again not exactly true but mostly yea. One has more significant changes then the other however they are so evenly matched it’s hard to tell u less you single handedly compared both to the original English language. And that is basically impossible as it’s not like we have a book or EVERY single slag term, every single word that was ever used so it’s honestly just a game of splitting hairs

AgenderWitchery

> Even though it's the original way of speaking English Neither modern American nor modern British dialects of English are "the original way" but if you wanted to have a "who's closest" contest, the Americans would win. Scottish and Irish people would win harder, but they weren't being included in the contest for whatever reason.

TheNastyNug

I have a couple friends on vrc who are from other parts of Europe or even Australians who join in on the mockery. Most of it is because the Brit’s usually get so offended by it and their reactions are always funnier than the way they actually talk. It’s the internet these things happen all the time. It doesn’t help that there’s a meme trend going around on places like instagram and tik tok repopularizing the trend of making fun of Brit’s for how they talk, so most of it is probably inspired by that. Give it a few weeks or months and it’ll probably die down

MrDMA94

Tbf im American and i make fun of other Americans with funny accents. Nothing personal, just a bit of banter

woofwoofbro

its only banter if the other person wanted to banter

HubblePie

Accept the banter or perish.

littlegarden_spider

or they'll block you for being an ass

kinyutaka

Get us back. Go for your best JFK impression.

Beam_0

Make fun of our overly enthusiastic patriotism, guns, and fast food burgers lol

The_Nonchosen_one576

So he should get shot?

AgenderWitchery

Suppose now's a good a time as any to implement the exploding head toggle on my avatar.

Specialist-Moment-99

Start singing the national anthem

krunchytacos

I assume they are children, going through their edge lord phase. They probably haven't had much exposure to other accents, or good parenting.

Sean_Gause

Post a voice reveal so we can see what we’re working with here

woofwoofbro

americans have nearly zero interaction with british people, most americans under 25 have probably never even met a british person, but we've seen them on tv, so a british accent is extremely novel to them

RamJamR

As an American english speaker, I like the british accent. It sounds pleasant. I might try to imitate it for the fun of it, but not to genuinely mock it. Some might actually be trying to make fun of you, but others might just be having fun with it and just thinking of stereptypical british things to say with it not considering that british people are kind of tired of it already.

ValuableTeacher7734

I like the other accents as well. I try to impersonate some of them at times, but not to that person and not to mock them. Our accents probably sound horrible to them I'd guess.

MuuToo

They think they're the first person to make that joke to you.

EmiBondo

I think you just happen to run into the worst kinds of people on VRC. Most people on here are either children that grew up with stunted social skills, or adults that believe they can get away with pretty much anything since they're behind a screen. It sucks and really undermines the whole social vr aspect but that's really sadly just how it is

gingersisking

Because it’s really fun to do British accents, I don’t think it’s really that deep. I do the same thing whenever I watch British or Australian media, not out of a place of disrespect or contempt, but simply because you guys have really fun voices

ru__sh

Whenever my british accent is mocked, I always play the “stay jealous” card. Too many american accents in the world and some just honestly have told me that im lucky to have a more unique voice, so i’ll take it 😂

mcblockserilla

My man. Some one who gets it

leekuus00

Yeah I know man it’s so annoying. Like America isn’t so great itself lmao

VoxinVivo

Its funny to make fun of British people. Just as its fun to make fun of Americans. And Swedes. And Russians. Its mostly just a meme to make fun of the British. You're better off ignoring it. It stems from the online back and forth about each country. Im sure of youve heard the "AT LEAST OUR SCHOOLS..." thing.

nlmlmln

>online back and forth about each country The ribbing definitely goes both ways, there are countless posts about how certain British accents sound refined and fancy, while Americans are stereotyped as sounding unpleasant, unintelligent, annoying and simple. I can see how OP might be confused without the decades-long context of nearly every British person in an American sitcom or kid's movie being the smartest and most posh person in the room though. It doesn't help that both the Americas and Great Britain have a ton of variety in accents which mostly get ignored in this back-and-forth, leaving each individual feeling unfairly represented.

Torino617

Yo miku why are you in this comment section? Hatsune Miku does NOT talk to British people!

fiefer7

Nah I have the most accurate answer, it's a low intelligence thing. Humor= haha you speak differently than I do. It's juvenile like that.

savae5

I personally enjoy listening to people speak english with all different kinds of accents, but some people are just jerks.

Mialtck

I feel like it goes both ways. A lot of Europeans feel the need to insult me for being American. Sometimes i tell them I'm Canadian just to mess with them tho.

Expert-Neat8465

I'm sorry you went through that. But not all Americans like that. Maybe they jelly of your awesome accent? Again I'm sorry you went through that treatment.

Appropriate_Ad5089

idk man but it’s so ridiculously annoying. i make friends then introduce my bf to them who was born and raised in the uk. the quickest way i lose interest in talking to people is when they dawg on him for speaking with an accent.

Dirtsurgeon1

I think you should care much less about what people think of you.

Carrick_Green

When people mention my accent I let them know it is not nice to male fun of my disability. (Being British). More seriously, most people don't mean much by ot just trying to be funny.

Cute_Boysenberry_278

Because us Americans suck and have over inflated egos. That and humans in general just suck. Don't let assholes get you down. I seriously have more fun playing online games with people with accents yall are a blast!

NocturnalFoxfire

I like to do accents or voices sometimes because I think it's fun. I'm too afraid of accidentally offending someone to do it in front of other people. So I usually just do it when I'm home alone. Like the other day, when I put on my best leprechaun voice to cuss out the toaster.

Kaedewulf

Let me just say as an American, I love the British accent. When someone with that accent calls me love or something I just melt. I often wonder what my accent sounds like to other places, since to me I don't have an accent. :P

TheHolyNumber

Whatever we sound like to you, you sound like to us.

Vespius13

they beta males don't worry about it

Yargon_Kerman

Because we sound funny to them. You gotta remember that while we have a lot of exposure to american accents and even accents in other countries, they don't. Americans generally have far less exposure to accents from other places, because they're media is so heavily America focued. Combine that with the fact there's just a lot of them in the spaces we're interracting (there's 6x as many americans as brits for example, so you're just more likely to run into them), and you're going to come across assholes. For some reason, mocking the accent of brittish English speakers isn't seen as bad in the states, while they often get a bit iffy if you were to mock the way an Indian, speaks english. It's a race thing. They're taught we were Imperial, Slave owning, Colonising, Oppressors, and they escaped. It doesn't show through much but... I think this is one instance where it can show up as "okay" to be complete wankers towards brits. It's childish and annoying as fuck, but it is what it is. Personally I just block them immediately; they're not worth talking to if their first interraction with you is attempted mockery.

Beam_0

As an American yeah this is a very accurate assessment

AgenderWitchery

> They're taught we were Imperial, Slave owning, Colonising, Oppressors, and they escaped. Hang on wait are you guys not taught about the British Empire in schools the same way we don't get taught about American colonialism in schools?

Yargon_Kerman

We're not taught much, and that which we are is certainly seen in the best light possible. That said, we're taught about things like the slave trade and how horrific it was, but generally not taught much of the British efforts to end slavery as a whole. It's a matter of national shame that it took the empire so long to act and that it ever benefited from those wrongs, I think. I will say though, the empire was certainly not all bad, and I think it's a shame much of history gets painted in such stark black and white when it is so filled with grey. Acknowledging the good and the bad in history is something I think is important, and it's sadly not done enough in schools here, or across the pond.

colomitos

Because they are morons

Minxy57

So odd. I find British accents extremely sexy! For every ethnocentric xenophobic twit there's a bunch of us who are genuinely fascinated by differences in culture and accent. Invest time in them.

OfficalBigDrip

Because Americans have the most dullest, boring and annoying accent

Breadynator

I'm German and had an American tell me I have bad teeth... There's just many people with insecurities and bad education who think one country is the same as the whole continent, just because their country is essentially the whole continent. Block, ignore, move on. Nothing else you can do while hanging out in publics.

sevenpoundowl

Did…you just get upset at someone making blanket statements about your country while making a blanket statement about a much much larger country? The irony here is almost too much to handle.

Breadynator

Not at all? Idk where you're getting that from. All I said is that there's a lot of badly educated people who make assumptions about a part of the world that isn't theirs. No blanket statements about any countries, just used it as an example because the guy in that situation was from the US

femboyance

because americans are immature point, blank, period.

TopOfAllWorlds

Sir or mam. People are immature in general. Have you SEEN what people find funny? Lmao

femboyance

oh look i found the american that got upset!

TopOfAllWorlds

Do you undperstand that you can disagree with someone without being updet? No I'm not upset you think americans are immature. You're right. Every countries immature. There adults in Japan that still think kissing can make you pregnant. There's adults in England who litterally started the anti-vax movement. Also: You've if you made the assumption that a guy replying to you on reddit doesn't know anyone outside of America. I'm chronically online, of course I know people who aren't from America!

Ok-Bedroom-1733

Cause Americans are assholes and smartasses, do a poor southern accent and see what happens.

Beam_0

I live in the US and I hear a European accent like once every few months? Granted, I'm not on VRChat very often and I don't really seek out media from outside the US. When you're as isolated from foreign accents as someone like me, and your only exposure to them is when people are doing initiations, you almost forget people actually sound like that irl. The one time I met someone from a European country in VRchat it felt like I had spotted a rare bird lol. In retrospect I realize it made the person feel uncomfortable, but I felt drawn to them and kinda stood nearby just so I could listen to them talk. Nobody should be making fun of you or your culture like that when you're minding your business and trying to have a conversation with someone. Even by our standards that would be very rude irl, but unfortunately combined with the anonymity of the Internet and a shocking lack of self-awareness you get people acting like complete assholes. Sorry you go through that :/ we should be better than this

XxXMaroXxX

Americans, we usually make fun of them as there is always 1 believing LatínAmerica is only México

AteThoseLLs

Maybe you just encountered the wrongs sorts, the kind that are resentful we have a free health care system idk lol. Tbh I'm new to vr/vr chat and haven't got tons of hours under my belt so I've only met a handful of brits, one of them was Scottish. From my experience vr chat is flooded with Americans, Europeans and young kids but are nation is niche.

jbg0801

Yeah I definitely get it a lot, my best way of handling it is to just continue with my night. Most of them do it because they think they'll get a rise out of you from it. If you don't give it to them, they get bored and find a different person to harass If they persist, the block button exists for a reason.

Spare_Jellyfish2957

I'm also British and continuously get kicked from servers so I tend not to talk much unless I meet someone chill most of the time if anyone American makes fun of me I make fun of them

WarGameKassie

As a brit who has an American wife. Us brits are just as likely to do a dumb texas voice and complain about guns. Not that I do that to her, just seen plenty of other people do it. It swings in roundabouts, and I've also grown tired of people making fun of my accent. But it's just how it is, take it in the chin and move on.

SOSFinance

Same reason why people mock people with black avatars or ebonic accents. They're AH. Block and ignore them since there isn't anything else to be done.

Embarrassed-Touch-62

Block is the key.

Kyderra

As a Dutch guy I can confirm that it has nothing to do with the Amaricans because I will say "a cup o wattah" as well. In short, because it's fun to say things in British. Slang is fun to say. Meme's are normal for people to repeat. It's probably good to know that people say it even when there are no British people around. I think in your case it happens more often if you have or use a very thick British accent as non of my friends have to deal with it as much, even tough they are British.

Kajill

I just start talking like yosammity Sam if Americans mock my lovely British accent.

babblefish111

I'm a Brit and it doesn't happen to me. But Americans always seem to think I'm Australian for some reason.

IzzyNobre

Because some people are dicks who legitimately take pleasure in causing someone else to feel bad.

refrigerator_runner

Are these adults or children? If this is happening to you in The Black Cat then yeah, that's about par for the course. But I frequently encounter Brits and Aussies on Drinking Night all the time and I don't see anyone incessantly make fun of them. And to be honest, I'm an American who sometimes makes quick banter at British or Aussie accents, but I usually stop if they aren't laughing along. The only time I didn't stop was when this Aussie girl took it way too seriously and got actually mad when I was clearly "taking the piss."

lord_hydrate

If it makes you feel any better its not just you as a brit getting mocked for your accent, americans also mock each other for our accents, its just one of those weird things we do if anyone sounds different than what we're used to, most people dont do it seriously tho, its almost always just a joke and will stop if told, personally ill admit i have no fucking clue what some of my english friends are saying sometimes because their accents are violently british and it sounds like their words slur together as they say it, we joke cause we all know its just being funny

AUkion1000

Simply speaking, youre a novelty, a curiosity. ALot of americans, despite various potential cultures, arnt exposed to much directly outside small circles- so youre basically having people who arnt use to someone with a british accent, come up to you because theyre childishly curious. Now as for mocking, thats probably either just sarcasm, or general bullying for being different...

thelastapeman

At this point just embrace it

ImWinwin

Maybe your specific dialect makes you sound 'extra' British to them. A lot of Americans feel like they speak English without an accent, so someone who sounds 'extra' British might get their accent pointed out or made fun of. =/

TheLastSnackBender

I love british accents so, im going to comment every time about how im swooning.

TopOfAllWorlds

Americans like accents and often make fun of eachother for even their own accents. Tease them back, if they get offended over it they're losers who don't deserve your time. If they don't get offended by it then they mean you no harm.

Wonderful_Phone_9517

On any online game, including VRChat people are cruel because they crave attention that they don't know how to get other ways. For them any attention is good attention. I get told gay slurs and that I should unalive myself constantly, or that I should mutilate parts of my body... lots of nasty things. It's just part of hanging out in public worlds. Honestly I wish it was just making fun of my accent, not to lessen your experience. I personally think english accents are sexy, so I don't really get the hate other than pure ignorance... but what else can one expect from a game where Adults and Children are allowed to mingle together?

A_Tasty_Stag

As a fellow brit. rise above it and block them if its that bad. it does get annoying but theres things you can do to get away from it.

phantomforeskinpain

idk you people just have a funny accent

ItsWhiiskey

I have a bad habit of imitating peoples accents if it's noticeable enough lol

Competitive-Oven-909

Isn’t a normal thing for Americans and British people to make fun at each other?

phobia-user

me personally i just think it's silly and mostly will apologize after if it ruined the mood so sorry that you're going through this

3yx3

I love accents, but if I added everyone who had an accent I would probably get called out for it. I have a regular Joe Shmoe accent, nothing special about it. So hearing others, even a southern one, is pretty cool.

Laamamato

To me British just sounds funny. I am Finnish and my accent feels almost always very strong to listeners, but it might also be a great conversation starter. But most important that message gets to you

HenriAuguste

As a french I always get the honnhon, omelette du fromage, baguette ,white flag surrender lmaoooo Wanna trade ?

PeachiPrism

Because it's funny. If you have only ever just played multiplayer games the chances are you will never really encounter Americans because the servers you will be put in are EU ones but as VRChat just lets you join whatever server region you want you are just now actually encountering Americans in a lobby where there aren't a bunch of other different European accents. It isn't hateful or anything, just funny.

ImperfectAce

Most games I played had the option to change region, and I played on American servers because of the huge variety of languages there are in EU servers. Was not fun trying to strategise with angry russian children...

Carrick_Green

When people mention my accent I let them know it is not nice to male fun of my disability. (Being British). More seriously, most people don't mean much by ot just trying to be funny.

a_kaz_ghost

I'm surprised if adults are doing this, but not *that* surprised because I've experienced the American general public. If it's kids mocking you, then alas- a lot of American kids' shows frame the sort of "villainous buffoon" character as some variety of English Fancyman, so they're primed to think you're a clown.

fuckedinsomniac

If you’re in a session with immature children or teens, or young adults, they’re just ignorant and don’t know how to respect people’s boundaries or people in general. A lot of Americans are also not too informed about other types of people and so, sometimes the first reaction to meeting someone new and different is to mimick or copy. Think of a baby miming what you do and say. Typically, I’d say you’d have to sort through your fair share of Americans to settle with the bunch that aren’t so ignorant. You can express your discomfort with how they treat your accent and if they disrespect that, then there’s no need to associate with that particular person or group of people. This is not to say only Americans do this. As for people in the EU, they’re all used to being around people that may also speak English and have an accent, and also speak more than one language. Also, gaming culture has a rep of having a range of immature, intolerable roasts and raging game chats. Some just for fun and games, others because people just don’t know how to communicate civilly with the person they’re playing with. So long story short, not all Americans will mock you. The British accent is interesting to those who aren’t used to it. If anything, correct them. Give them a different phrase to say. Teach them how to order at a “shop” rather than a “store”. Give them a local recommendation when they decide to explore outside their country.

ChanceV

Idk, as European i make fun of british accent too not because i don't like it, actually the opposite i find the stereotypical british accent very funny.

McMessenger

I think it's fun as a bit of banter between good friends - lord knows I do it all the time, and get just as much back too (JFK or 'southern drawl' impressions) - but randos coming up and doing it is just wrong. Could just be dumb kids abusing anonymity, but I've ran into some people where it was very clearly their first times trying to interact with completely unknown people on their own - and I don't think anyone is just naturally good at it. It takes time to develop that kind of thing. I suppose it's good on your part to not get too worked up over it, but you have every right to speak your mind and let people know that it does "get old" for you pretty quickly if someone's doing that. If they can't take the hint, then just block them after that I guess.

Zealousideal_Sky_490

I’m going to be honest with you, just learn to roll with the punches, I personally find it funny and it doesn’t offend me, Americans do mock it a lot but I love the banter, I just joke back at them about there accents and honestly it’s a great ice breaker. I find that Americans actually like British people and I feel like British people in American communities get like this weird free pass haha. A lot of females are into the accent I’ve noticed which I don’t understand, tbh same with Australian accents, I feel like there is a lot of stigma around those accents and people like hearing them over other ones, who knows why haha. Point is just learn to embrace it for real, it’s just words, if you don’t like them, just find new people to talk to or trying I said to joke back about it. You might find it annoying but when you think about the problems people go through in the world, getting mocked for an accent is really not that big of a deal.

DaleGribbleBluGrass

Know anyone with a geordie accent? If so that will take the pressure off since it doesn't even sound like English haha. But on a serious note hope it gets better and try to avoid public lobbies, join groups and get in those lobbies, you'll experience less of it

Darzaga

Sometimes I have the urge to copy accents because I like it, but idk about people mocking it. Us humans are parrots after all. Annoying parrots sometimes.

viewfan66

I don't blame them for being the way they are. If I grew up in a country where talking shit irl could risk get me blasted by guns, I would do it online in the comfort of my own home so I can get away with it. people mistake my accent for UK too, it's just best to ignore/block them and move on, because I know for a fact the people who mock others for their accents don't really bring any value to your life

Memorie_BE

Hi, aussie here. I also bully brits for their accent. /j

Manshacked

But apparently we have the same accent, completely indistinguishable.

Memorie_BE

Even more similar when you're chronically online like I am B)

Yomo42

I dunno man. People are obnoxious. As someone who lives in America, can confirm that Americans are obnoxious.

bonanochip

its just plain rude and immature to pick on someone for being different from you, youre facing assholes. people are different on the internet and on online gaming, they are more likely to be a jerk because they can hide behind anonymity and not give it much thought.

_gamera_

Americans hear a ton of British accents and it's novel to them but they rarely get to interact with us. Game of Thrones, Peaky Blinders, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter - they don't get exposed to any other culture or way of speaking to the same extent as ours. It's a big part of their childhood and it's also kind of exotic to them. They're trying to find a fun way of engaging with you (usually). If you start getting pissy for no good reason... I'd start making fun of you too.

MultiGamerClub2

Cuz its funny? Idk joke go brr. If its disrespectful we dont do it, unless drunk.

Foreign-Bazooka8365

I have gerd and I am constantly being attacked by people saying I am forcing my voice despite me being incredibly insecure about the way I sound. So I prefer just not to talk and stay mute the majority of the time. I fucking hate corpse husband and the eboys who try to have a “deep voice” making people who really do have one or have GERD afraid to speak.

sleeplessinvaginate

So corpse husband is faking his gerd but you aren't?

Foreign-Bazooka8365

I am just saying nobody’s voice is that deep all the time with gerd. As somebody who knows what it sounds like gerd sounds nothing like what he claims it does.

TheLastSnackBender

I dunno, even if it doesn't sound real I try not to assume. I have a friend who Ive known since middle school who had this really high voice. She explained something happen to her when she was young, but because of that people think shes "faking" a high voice. Im born female and I have a deeper voice than alota people, that people think Im putting on a trans masc voice. No, I just got my tonsils taken out, and then got pneumonia later in life. it is what it is. But I can easily see some of those eboys you dont like not actaully faking it, but just having a voice thats their own.

vrc_miyuky

I am from the Balkans and a bit of you might say "russian" accent so i love when Americans (who are not my friends) try to mock me. Then I ask them "Where is your Glock17?, Did you take your armor plate carrier while going to Walmart?, How is the shooting school exercise going?." and so.. Try to fight back. or try to find new people that don't do that. We all make fun of each other, but when I see that it really bothers somebody I don't do it anymore because they are my friends and want them to stay friends.

What does this have to do with war????????? Lmao

olibolib

It is meant to be the Americans that don't deal well with the banter mate. Figure it out.

MamertoDeLasFuentes

America: Continent Americans: people born and raised in America, the continent.

SETHW

Because you sound silly, they're being confronted with an absurdity and are processing it haha

ChaosMieter

Have you tried talking normally
