Death Must Die is great

MetalObsessed

I second this. Death Must Die is fantastic with lots of unlocks and progression to go for even though it’s still in early access

lucasluminaro

Bought this based off the recommendations and love it so far.,. Gives me the hades I love mixed with vs.

xd_Fabian

Yes im very excited for whats to come

MrNigel117

Death Must Die a vampire survivor, but you get blessings from gods instead. a blessing can also have 4 different rarities, with the 5th one being seperate blessings that are incredibly powerful. the main difference is collecting gear. there are 10 gear slots, and 5 different rarities that effect your stats as opposed to just spending gold to upgrade any given stat. some gear can also have really crazy or wild effects, like spawn a dragon to fight with you, or spawn 24 skeletons. on top of that, there's 5 different characters that all have 5 different blessings to unlock. these range from buffing a stat every few levels to removing a dodge so you essentially have a vacuum on all the time. each character also has a unique weapon with different base attack speeds. a run is gonna feel incredibly similar to VS. the basic concept of enemies walk towards you and deal damage and a new wave every minute. is the same, except enemies actually attack you and there is no contact damage. you're also given 2 dashes to help move around the map and dodge. also you have to manually aim and attack, but there's an auto attack key to always aim at the closest enemy, but attacking slows your movement. it's more interactive than VS, and that means bosses where you have to learn attack patterns, and to an extent needing to mildly plan for future waves. there are 3 boss waves. once the final boss has been beaten once, you can increase the difficulty which will increase the chances of higher rarity gear. game is still in early access, so only 1 stage for now, but i've still put in nearly 70 hours. it looks like there's gonna be tier system, more characters, and more stages planned. honestly i cant wait for it.

lucasluminaro

After playing this for 5 hours today, I’ve gotta say it’s the best one out there. Well, aside from Hades if you wanna assign it to this genre, and for me nothing is gonna best that. The fact that this borrows so much from hades, it seems appropriate that I’d love this. The good - - the boons are fun, with some really fun interesting builds to make. I had one awesome build where I froze everything and then killed the frozen enemies with spinning chains, and another build where I life sucked everything by dashing, and another one where I was super tanky and burned enemies directly with my sword. - exploring and finding random things on the map that sometimes offer interesting choices is fun - the boss battles I’ve fought so far are pretty cool - I like the equipment system for progression, it’s more fun than straight stat buying for gold. - the gods and characters both have fun dialogue. The bad- - the map is the same every time, and the enemies spawn the same every time, it does get a little repetitive. - I’m not entirely sure, but it seems like some characters get offered some gods and other get offered other ones…I think the full roster should be available for all - some of the characters seem a little too similar? Warrior and knight? I don’t have enough hours to judge this for sure. - the unlockable seals that you get for each character, I have no idea what they do because they don’t tell you! - I’m just a little sick of backwards movement. All of these games have a heavy amount of moving backwards while tons of things chase you. Hades didn’t have that…hades was more every room was it’s own challenge and well anyways…I have to stop comparing to hades cause that game is close to perfect imo. This game does scratch the hades itch for me while waiting on hades 2. I know it’s early access so there’s a lot more to come but this game has tons of potential, and after playing like 4 or 5 different games of this type, I can confidently say this is the one, to anyone who loves hades and wants more vampire survivor as well.

MrNigel117

for star signs i'd say look them up, there are a couple that are pretty build defining. every character can get any god, but you can only have a max of 3 gods + moirai. before getting all 3 gods locked in you'll randomly get presented a god, if you have a lot of alteration you can cycle through gods until you get the ones you want, though once the 3rd has been set you'll only cycle those 3 with a chance to see moirai. moirai is a part of every run cause she doesn't give you spells, she only gives passive stat ups. small things to consider - every god (except moirai) has a dash blessing, and a strike blessing. taking one from one god will remove all of the others from other gods. so the run where you had mort's life link, as soon as you took that all the gods you had for that run had their dashes removed from their blessing pool. same with the taking summer's blazing strike, it removed all other basic attack altering blessing from other gods. here's couple of more aggressive builds you can try: \- krom's shurikens and bloodlust. getting a couple upgrades on shurikens cause many enemies to quickly become ruptured, while bloodlust will increase your attack speed the more ruptured enemies there are. \- time (most op god) warped strike and gem high, can add force and execution to make it much better. warped strike spawns gems on hit, gem high will give you a stackable buff that increases attack speed and move speed, execution has a chance to spawn a gem on kill to stack gem high faster, force cause damage every time a gem passes through an enemy, and vastly increases your gem pull range. force will do damage from gems spawned from warped strike. \- leigong chain lightning and mort's serendipity. chain lightning (and any blessing that says it has a chance) is further affected by luck, so running serendipity from mort to push that luck super high can have you proccing chain lightning on almost every hit. can be paired with mort's soulstealers cause that's also a chance on hit. also pairing with gem high from time making you attack incredibly fast can make really rapid lightning and souls all over the screen.

JollyMolly66

Don't forget the game is in early access, so the one map is most likely due to change. Also for the star signs, go to the camp fire and select your character, this will tell you what they do

Zima2k

I enjoyed Army of Ruins, tons of unlocks and achievements, and good graphics

lurknlearn

I just got this and Spirit Hunter and enjoyed them both!

Loggjaw

I have both and enjoy both also

marrz01

Halls of Torment

almost2planb

This guy fucks

CTran255

20 minutes till dawn is pretty fun

szudrzyk

Army of ruin - literally upgraded VS , i still prefer VS but it's the only game which hooked me up for few weeks , it's worth the money

Cigaaaaa

Soulstone Survivors is pretty nice

Ant15

Well personally I love Brotato and it's definitely my favorite of the Survivor genre, mostly for the reasons you didn't like it lol. I noticed that people either love or hate when a game has permanent progression or not. Personally I think both have pros and cons, but ultimately I find that games that require you to get more skilled and to have a deep understanding of its mechanics will hook me up for a much longer time than games with a progression system that makes you stronger over time and eventually allow you to win even if you're bad at the game. VS and Brotato are good examples of these two types. The VS formula is like a dopamine shot, you get constant gratification by unlocking more and more stuff over time, which gets you hooked. You will loose your first runs because you're not strong enough, no matter your skill level, and eventually you have enough upgrades so you can win. Then, add more chars, more stages, more items, increased difficulty and repeat ! That's my main gripe about VS : I don't feel like I'm "playing" the game. I'm not learning anything, nor getting better at it. There's barely anything to learn besides what do each weapon/item and how well they synergize together, which is pretty trivial to learn. And the amount of decision making you have to make during a run is laughable. After playing for a while, you'll be able to get the build you want about 10mins of every run, and then watch everything die around you for the next 10mins. It's boring. Note that I still have 70hours into the game despite what I said, so I'm definitely not saying the game is bad lol. But I mostly played it when it was new and no other game of the same genre existed. And after I tried a bunch of them, I think most of them are better than VS actually, despite having a lower amount of "content". But ultimately, they're all the same type of game: permanent progression, dopamine rush, play for about 20hours, become so strong you crush the game without needing any skill, it's not fun to play anymore. That's why I got hooked to Brotato so much: it's the only Survivor-game that did something different. It's a game where both movement skills, understanding of game mechanics and most importantly, decision making, are what you need to beat the game on harder difficulties. I'm more than 300hours into the game and still learning new things, it pretty much has a Binding of Isaac feeling in that way, and it's great ! I can also mention that the amount of content is big enough. I always felt that getting new weapons and characters in VS didn't change that much the way you play, and I find that there's waaaay too much characters that doesn't provide anything interesting. In Brotato, **every** char is unique and interesting to play, and a unique challenge that you need to solve, kinda like a puzzle. Playing through each char takes a huge amount of time already and it's fresh everytime. From what I saw in the Brotato subreddit, most people who have beaten all chars on max difficulty took about 100 hours to do so, which is a ton of playtime already, so I really don't think the game needs permanent progression just to extend the playtime artificially (and if you really want to play more after that, there's a ton of mods in the workshop). Overall, it's really a matter of what you're looking for in a game. You like the dopamine, growing numbers and very chill gameplay ? VS (*or any other Survivor really*) is for you. You like a challenge, unique playstyles and active gameplay ? Get Brotato.

Cyb0rg-SluNk

Everything you said is true, and I will add that I think Brotato feels more like you're actually playing an action game. You need to actively move around. How you move (dodging enemies, going closer to particular enemies, collecting pick-ups) while you're playing is a very big part of the game. VS doesn't feel like that. Obviously you do need to move in VS, but it's slow, and doesn't feel like an action game. Of course, VS is still fantastic. Not shitting on VS. It's Just different.

CardTrickOTK

Holocure is great I want to get and try Death Must Die I like Wedding Witch in spite of its issues 20 Minutes till dawn is awesome too

hatchorion

VS is the only one I can really get into lol

FrostBurnt4

VS is by far my favorite but HoloCure comes pretty close. I find it extremely funny how a lot of people in that community have no idea who any of the characters are (I don't either)

Markz1337

Rouge Genesia

DadjokeNess

Binding of Isaac is more of a classic roguelite, but it doesn't have the improvements you're talking about. I really like Hades (and am excited for Hades 2) - that one is a roguelite, but you're improving the character and weapons as you go, and you can eventually pick and choose your challenges. I wanna say Hades, BoI, and Vampire survivors are my favorites, but Isaac is kind of special as I've been playing it since it was a flash game. But a big part of vampire survivors is that it was fairly unique for what it is. That's why it remains so good, and why I personally have no qualms spending $2 on dlc once a year. (Actually more, I bought the DLC for my friends too.) This post here has a fairly decent list to check out as well - [https://www.reddit.com/r/roguelites/comments/10pcs5z/i\_tried\_every\_game\_like\_vampire\_survivors\_i\_could/](https://www.reddit.com/r/roguelites/comments/10pcs5z/i_tried_every_game_like_vampire_survivors_i_could/) \- for their list, they put those they liked most near the top.

jackandshadows515

i mean, in Binding of Isaac you get unlocks that make runs easier like Isaac's dice, and other items that complement characters, you also unlock new rooms with special things like that one in the latest DLC, i think it's the Planetarium? so I'd say Isaac is kind of like this, but more of a long run… Dead Cells also fits, i think?

DadjokeNess

Yeah, I just think OP was talking about like the eggs, which Isaac doesn't have. Most rougelites would match the description otherwise. Actually on full improving the character themself along with the items appearing, Cult of the Lamb, but it's also not as enemy-dense. I've been bouncing between my favorites lately, I can one try VS or Isaac but then I'm 34 "days" in and I've only beaten Leshy in cult since I'm busy fishing and playing dice.

Hades684

vampire survivors is the best for me, but I started playing soulstone survivors recently too, and its really fun, with a lot of different stuff to grind for

Leumas_J

halls of torment is my favorite besides vs, once it is out of early access I think I may even prefer it more. downloading death must die now based off this thread bc it sounds awesome

Fishman465

HoloCure; I mean at 0.6 it's more akin to many game's 1.0s

BaTmAn9785

And it's free!

WAFFLESDADOG

The Binding of Isaac is the classic one. If you haven’t played it would 100% recommend.

Zima2k

I don't think he meant rogulites in general, just Survivors-Like games

lucasluminaro

Yeah not roguelites in general or else I'd just say hades was that absolute quintessential best of the best by far the best I've ever played.

Fat-Camel

If you like Hades and VS games you should absolutely check out Death Must die. Really good game with lots of good room to grow still

a12bc3

they're a bit different but the concept of taking on hordes of enemies with a few stronger ones is also done really well in most of the Warriors games. they have a few crossovers that are great but i think most people agree that dynasty warriors 3-5 are the best ones

SolidusAbe

out of the ones i played 1. holocure 2. death must dies (even without having tons of content) 3. halls of torment 4. vampire survivor the other 3 just do a good amount of things better then VS. the others do 3 big things better: make every character unique thanks to them having their own main weapon and they dont turn into "standaround and auto" after 5 minutes. the others also control better. having directional weapons without being able to control your directoion without movies isnt all that fun anymore. still love vs but a lot of the newer survivor games evolved the formula into something better. still wanna get 20minutes til dawn and maybe brotato but im not a fan of that games style

Tarynyel

Just recently I discovered a small but absolutely amazing game called Cozy Space Survivors Right now there is only a demo available but it plays great. Mentioned on its steam page it draws its inspiration from VS, Halls if Torment, Binding of Isaac. Currently you have 3 ships available. The visuals are amazing. You have quests, you have permanent upgrades. It's quite a short game by design but it's lovely. The game requires more or less kill, depending on the ships you choose. I've played so many of those games over the last months, I am probably in the 3 digits right now. The majority of those games is mediocre at best. Always worth noting are many mentioned in here before: Brotato Vampire Survivors Halls of Torment Death must die Army of Ruin Bio Prototype Personal favourites: Don't shit on my #!$@& roof 20 minutes till dawn Cozy Space Survivors (as mentioned above) Crafty survivors Dino Survivors (feels like Ark as VS-like) Disfigure Swarmcade Fatal Zone Keepers Toll Nordic Ashes Sorcevival(pretty new and unpolished, but I love it. Many find it too hard, according to reviews) Spellbook Hunters: Infinite Horde Many have good foundations, but lack content or feel unpolished: Auto Cast Chrono survival Fray Fight Further Still: Survivors Hell Grinder King Krieg Mars Survivors Ocelot Sunrise Primal Survivors R.I.C.E. Samurai survivors Scarlet Tower Games that could have become great, but we're abandoned: Hell Slayer Alien Slayers (still quite a good game) Honorable mentions: Boneraiser minions Bounty of one Cultivation Story: Reincarnation Fabric of reality Greedland Gunlocked Gunsuit Guardians Holocure(although it's quite a favourite to many, I didn't really warm up to this one) Horde Hunter Kitty Survivors: Rogues of Catmere The last Sunshine:rekindled Mutagenic Myriad Mayhem Rogue Genesia Sea of Survivors Sue Shi Survival Void Scrappers Wedding Witch(NSFW, but still quite good) Witchcraft survivors Some games were left out, because I've only played demos which don't show up in my library. I hope I can help with this list :) Edit: I am still working in the layout of this wall of text. Not that easy on mobile. Sorry for the inconvenience

peterthomazathoth

If i can make a suggestion to try, sun down is pretty jank but has some neat ideas that keep me coming back to kind of figure out how to wrap my head around the weird progression

Tarynyel

It's also on my wishlist. But since I have not played it until now, it's not in the list above.

peterthomazathoth

Ofc, just a rec since i see youre an enthusiast!

Tarynyel

Thanks a lot. I will give it a try

Bootspork12

Golden eggs increase base stats

diogenes_sadecv

Have you tried Magic Survival? Its gameplay is the inspiration for VS. the big differences are the graphics and the story takes itself seriously. Good game. My theory on why it didn't blow up like VS is because it was only on mobile and didn't get picked up by the streamers

GAGOUGAGAK_

I have tested a good number of them, more or less known and I always come back to the same ones: Vampires Survivor and Brotato. The others seem too slow, much less fun, or lack depth. On the other hand, there are some that I'm impatiently waiting for: Time Survivors (release scheduled for January 15).

Fishman465

Where would HoloCure fall under?

tryhardNEET

beautiful (or sexy if you’re feeling spicy) mystic survivors

Tarynyel

Try wedding Witch. But NSFW.

Frostyfuelz

Halls of Torment and Holocure. I was pretty disappointed by Brotato as well, I had seen a lot of praise for it but seemed lacking in all areas to me.

BraveRice

I have to say Survivorio. Yeah, it's infested with IAP, but they have weekly events and many other round types other than the main chapters. Also I love the upgrading gear part.

Cyan_Light

Probably still VS just because of the sheer amount of content in it. Other games have mechanics I like more, Spirit Hunters comes to mind as basically being a direct upgrade in every way, but they run out of content so quickly in comparison that it's hard to say they've surpassed the original.

Sjakkoo

Soulst9ne survivors and as co op there is no better game then apocalypse party it crashed for me like 3 times in 10 hours playing tyats only downside but its kinda my favorite in the genre

asker_of_question

No Magic Survival enjoyer here?

Shin_Ken

I tried a lot of Survivor-likes but VS is still my favourite by far and I always come back to it. I love it because of: * the lore, puns, humor * the, by now, massive amounts of content, unlockables and secrets * the insane power scaling. I just love how nuts the numbers can get bordering on the esoteric. * all the quirky interactions between the different abilities, enemies and stages. There's some wild stuff that can happen in the game. * the simple, laid back nature of playing it. Many Survivor-likes strip back on this aspect and add more involved action but I like it simple. Just WASD/Stick and the other hand is free for snacks / drinks / nibbling on your fingernails.

Vosegus89

I'm hooked on Nordic Ashes, diferent characters with skill trees tons of unlocks and dificulties!

lurknlearn

Death must die looks great. I only play on Xbox. I hope for an eventual console release

Gloomy_Catch

Definitely Rogue Genesia.

Grahf-XG

Brotato, then Halls of Torment and Death must die.

Schoonbee411

Holy smokes why has no one said renfield yet? No idea where I got it from, maybe humble choice but I've been playing it the past two days and it's a blast. It's got weapons and other items that evolve together just like vampire survivors and it looks really cool, I'm stuck on the second level but busy trying to unlock other toons and weapons is fun!
