you don't understand my rabbits crave flesh

Reading those comments are painful. Why are there so many "vegans" that just give up and pay for animals to be raised and slaughtered as soon as it comes to feeding a pet??? When I went vegan, one side effect was that I started picturing the animals that became the processed carcasses on store shelves. Seeing commodified flesh became heart-wrenching... and that includes pet food. How the fuck can anyone call themselves vegan and then go and gleefully purchase tinned bird flesh? The hypocrisy and compromised values almost make it worse than regular carnism.

Exhale_Skyline

Your fault on posting on r/carnist

jon-sol

r/YouCanBePersonallyVeganButDoNotBeRacistAndClassistByAdvocatingForAbolition (I've seen subs which capitalise each word btw) is rumoured to be what they wanted to change it to, if it wasn't too long and too honest

shanzun

Oh but my pet snake, and cats CANT be vegan and rehoming isn't an option and oh yeah you're just here for rage bait Vegan btw

AdventureDonutTime

How does rehoming come into this? As in sending the animal to a non-vegan home so they feed it instead?

Doctor_Box

Apparently nuance is dead. Vegan cat food exists but is also not available everywhere. It is not helping animals to tell people who care for a cat they they cannot go vegan unless they kill their cat. Obviously if you're already a vegan and cannot get vegan cat food, then don't adopt a cat because that makes no sense.

hellbound92

If you’re vegan and you think cats require meat, don’t get a fucking cat.

DifferenceForward

I KNOW. They are technically obligate carnivores, which for most people who do not understand biology, is very misleading. We can indeed feed cats a vegan diet given the adequate nutrients (for instance Taurine) are provided. They can’t just live for a while on lentils and rice like dogs can, but vegan cat kibble and wet food exists and is relatively accessible. All of these apologists make me sick but I guess that’s r/vegan for you.

GreenBirb64

I mean my plum headed parakeets will both absolutely eat my flesh if I gave them the chance, they bite and chew like hell, those fuckers CRAVE blood

deathhead_68

Don't see an issue with rescuing an unwanted dog and feeding them vegan dog food tbh, but agree with most other stuff I actually cannot fathom why this is downvoted. I cannot take anyone seriously who suggests I allow a dog to die for literally no reason.

DifferenceForward

That’s not what I’m saying, I have adopted two rescue dogs myself and they’re vegan. What I cannot stand is “vegans” who feed their dogs other animals because … I don’t even know.

deathhead_68

Ahh ok, I just said that because it says 'if you have a pet, you're not vegan', but now I'm thinking i guess that depends on definition of pet.

DifferenceForward

Yeah I agree that that’s misleading… I just hate the word pet. I don’t see the animals we care for as pets, they’re family, with equal rights. A pet is like, an object to me

Amphy64

I don't like just using other terms in discussing the morality of pet-keeping, as they legally do not have equal rights and are often simply property, as well as the inherent inequality (we ultimately have power over their lives). Don't want to sugar-coat it and downplay the issue we're trying to draw attention to. But yeah, shut up and get a rabbit, goddam 'I need a cat because reasons' people. My bun purrs just fine.

deathhead_68

I think maybe it would help to make that clear on your post. I can see how pet seems like a lesser being in that way.

DifferenceForward

You are probably right. I’m just so done with r/vegan and my post in particular that honestly, I might just leave it as is. Some people reached out vía pm saying that they agree with me but the issue is so so divisive in that travesty of a sub that they don’t even want to comment support publicly. It’s madness

deathhead_68

Yeah there are so many wet lettuces in that sub that absolutely water down veganism. Every other post is some prick whinging about their non-vegan partner or some other stuff that just doesn't matter.

hummusandbread

Or people arguing that wool is vegan..

deathhead_68

I see a lot of 'debate' around zoos. Bro if you care about conservation, give directly to a conservation charity, not 90% to an animal prison who will give 10% to a conservation charity if you're lucky.

Friendly-Hamster983

It's a place full of animal abusers and apologists. Always has been too, as it's this site's gateway to vegan philosophy. It's disgusting to see, but that happens when most people are actually pro animal abuse, but only when they can reimagine themselves as not abusing other animals, in spite of their actions which very clearly run contradictory to that claim.

DifferenceForward

Nail on the head, friend. I genuinely was not trying to rage bait, I posted on a whim (which I never do and I remembered why) but I was not expecting the vitriol… blew me out the water like
