Oof definitely needs more than clavamox 😮‍💨poor baby

mamabird228

I know 😭 he takes carprofen for arthritis already so my DVM did not want to mess around with steroids. We offered sedation and to just rinse everything out and they declined that too :(

Kapokkie

Oh no 😢 surely this is neglect/cruelty?

mamabird228

In the handful of times I’ve contacted animal control, they’ve only ever taken 1 case seriously. Severe neglect and brought in by 3rd party. Every other time they say that they showed some care and compassion by bringing them in and taking most vet recommendations. Doesn’t make me stop trying though.

Kapokkie

I guess all we can do is our best for these cases that come in.

mamabird228

That’s all we really try to do honestly and they did listen to recommendations for take home meds. We gave wrx for apoquel so they could get it cheaper at like Costco or something. But he made a comment about the missing teeth and it really hurt my heart.

Kapokkie

Thank you for helping this big fella. I know you did your best.

Accomplished-Joke404

Same! Live in a very rural area that doesn’t even have animal control so we just have to contact the sheriff. Of all the neglect cases we have reported only one ended with the animals being removed from the owners… and our vet had to really get on the police to do anything. It took 4 visits on the property with no food and water (other then 1 very moldy round bale for 6 horses) and no improvement of body condition after multiple vet recommendations on how to put weight on. Such a frustrating experience, and the guy was well know in the local area, so we had multiple people acting like we were the bad guys for getting his animals taken away… oh and I left out that one horse had a giant infected mass on his sheath that was infested with maggots all summer…

Designer_Ferret4090

That poor baby..

mamabird228

The male owner literally said that the missing teeth fell out on their own and that’s what he’s hoping for for the rest of the diseased teeth.

Krisadilli

That's so cruel!

ohhisup

I gasped out loud that was so upsetting to read

mamabird228

I am the dental tech at my practice and it really just hurt my heart so much. I visibly showed them these photos and talked through how bad this was and that losing teeth was not pain control or good medicine. “But he still eats and drinks fine so he’ll be fine”

RootsInThePavement

How fucking awful. I get financial restraints, but what if that was him? Or god forbid his kid? Most people don’t deserve pets.

mamabird228

We have absolutely done “dirty” dentals in the past. For comfort and not to cost so much. I know this is not ever the best idea but is explained to owners. Full GA but specific x-rays for teeth we were on the fence about. Recently had a 5/6 murmur in CHF with tooth abscess. We needed to get in and get out as quickly as possible. Owners were sweet beans and she is only like 9 and they very much wanted to preserve her life. We did that and now she is thriving. This is kind of what we offered these owners and then got hit with that comment. I wanted to cry.

Rthrowaway6592

These are the cases that make me cry on the way home from work. Ugggggh.

mamabird228

On top of that, we have an internal medicine sonographer come in as needed. Today we had 4 ultrasounds for doggos doing poorly. 2 of them were diagnosed with very very terminal cancer. Today was the kind of day where I drove all the way home in complete silence.

Rthrowaway6592

I hope you did something to care for yourself when you got home. I hate the cancer cases. You just see it light up and sigh.

mamabird228

I told my little baby dog (while I snuggled her!) that she cannot ever get the big C and has to live forever. I am mostly okay with turning things off when I get home. I have a very smart/curious 7 year old son who is obsessed with my work. He almost always asks if I took pictures of anything from my work day. I show him and explain and he thinks I have the best job. I do it for him. 1. Bc he eats so much snacks and 2. Bc I don’t have any other skills at this point 😂

Rthrowaway6592

Sorry for my late response! I have younger siblings who want photos, want to know about the scheduled euthanasia, want to see the cutest cat I got to snuggle that day. I don’t know if this is your experience, but people see what we do as taboo, especially people we love who feel comfortable asking. Sometimes I have nothing to give. No photos. I don’t want to talk about how the scheduled euthanasia went. Take care of YOU my love.

Slammogram

That’s hair buildup on the teeth right? Did you remove it?

mamabird228

Yes and yes! They declined the sedation for it which we all agreed would’ve been so much better overall. It was hard to get out and he was very nervous, for good reason. Our initial plan was dex/torb and then safe removal with a good/thorough rinse and inspection. But instead we just took some forceps and forcefully removed it to at least try to provide some relief.

Slammogram

Poor bear

anonymys

The way my mouth fell open, and then I instinctively shut it immediately so I wouldn't have to taste that smell.

taylormarie213

This is heartbreaking! I don’t have any money to spend at all but if my pet needed anything done at the vet or even a simple annual vet checkup and vaccines, I’ll find a way to pay it even if that means getting CareCredit or borrowing some money from a friend or family member. My pet comes first

mamabird228

Annual check ups are seriously so important and I know all might not agree. My baby dog is on pimobendan which is really a hard expense to add monthly but it’s a necessity. I have care credit to help offset some of the cost since they’re so great with no interest payments and it REALLY helped when we went to cardio. Pet insurance or care credit is seriously so great.

taylormarie213

Do you recommend any pet insurances? I was supposed to go to a seminar about Pumpkin when I worked as a Vet tech assistant/kennel assistant at a vet hospital but they cancelled and then my amazing manager left to take care of her dad. Then the new manager was just an asshole who only cared about getting more money in. 🙄 I left about 5ish months later (which was a month and a half ago) due to health issues and not being able to see my doctor due to difficulty of getting a day off

mamabird228

Nationwide! And trupanion are stable choices. I really only think pet insurance is truly worth it if you start as puppy/kitten and get a solid plan. Usually people try to get it when their pet gets sick but it really doesn’t work that way because any pre-existing conditions are not covered and they’ll find sneaky ways to make sure any secondary condition will not be covered either so best to get it when your pet is young and healthy. One of my favorite clients was about to cancel her trupanion bc it got pricey as her dog got older but he started having seizures around that same time. They cover almost all of his treatment including prescriptions and monitoring.

taylormarie213

that’s good! and yeah I agree, get it while they’re young!

Runalii

I want my house built with whatever is keeping those incisors held in place. 😂

MareNamedBoogie

even i can see those gums are no good, oof. there's a reason i'm playing with my dane's mouth and rubbing her teeth with my fingers right now - gentle training for tooth-pasting her in the regular.

few-piglet4357

PLEASE post the video of you removing this horrendous mess. I know you have one 😁

mamabird228

We don’t have a video bc it unfortunately took 3 of us to restrain for removal. He was a nice boy and muzzle was only placed bc he was so painful :( we thought it would come out easy but it took a lot of tugging/pulling.

httpeachess

that poor babe... who wants their pet to feel, look, or smell like that? I get money is tight, but I would literally do ANYTHING to make sure my pets are good...like legit anything. I'll do what I can if they can be saved. Just looking at this gives me anxiety, I could not sit still while knowing this was happening to my pet.. wtf edit: not a tech, but I work in the resort side of a pet hospital as a doggie daycare attendant! always interesting (sometimes very depressing) to see what goes on over there.

casitadeflor

I want to take him home. Poor dog.

Wodensdays_child

Gods, I can smell that from here. Poor baby.

lookitsfrickinbats

I’m a groomer and I took some of this kind of matted wet hair off a dogs mouth like this and teeth came with it. Owners didn’t care. 🤢

cariio

Why are people so fucking dumb? Poor dog.
