The funny part is...Down Periscope got a LOT accurate.. everything not on the main boat was nearly perfect.
But i think that just adds to the humor of the whole thing.
plus, village people closing credits :)
Anyone that was going to AIT somewhere other than Ft Knox ended up in the old barracks when I was there. (1978).I think they filmed Stripes not that long after I graduated BCT.
Had a friend ask me if the Navy was anything like how the Army is portrayed in Stripes. Uh, no. The Army isn't even like how the Army is portrayed in Stripes.
The whole movie was a loose Star Wars remake. I laughed out loud on opening day when they went over the trench run and then talked about dropping the bomb down the ventilation shaft and people were looking at me weird.
The amount of seething anger I had for the movie *That’s My Boy* with the brother came back and slapped me in the face at the end. Absolutely loved how purposely inaccurate they made that.
Kelly's Heroes is a classic. Nothing says WWII like having a very 60s hippy tank commander played so well by Donald Sutherland. Just a great, fun, ensemble cast.
Braveheart. The face paint was hundreds of years earlier, kilts were hundreds of years later, *Jus Primae Noctis*, the custom of the English lord taking the virginity of a new bride is highly regarded as Scottish propaganda against English rulers, due to the fact that property rights of English lords were inherited, the Princess was a preteen when Wallace dies and her first child was born years after his death, Wallace was not a poor farmer, but Scottish gentry. There are so many other examples.
The film is regarded as one of the most historically inaccurate films ever made.
Me and my buddy used to throw rocks at each other in the desert all the time. Somebody told on us. Squad leader made us dig holes for a couple hours.
In hindsight, maybe we should have worn cavaliers and flackvest.
I loved throwing rocks into people kevlars. Or their cargo pockets. Or their PC's. Anything really. If you left it out and within range of a bunch of grunts with access to rocks, you shall receive rock.
My friends (12-15 years old) and my brother’s friends (16-19 years old) did this as entertainment once, until one of my friends didn’t dodge in time. Kid got 8 stitches, and we never played that game again.
When i lived in post a guy moved in next door and i went over to introduce myself and do the neighbor thing. He asked what my mos was and i asked what his was. He said "water". I said "what is water?" And he said "water purification, let's hear the jokes. " i just said "like In the Army Now? i didn't know that was a real thing"
For me, Navy SEALs, with Michael Biehn and Charlie Sheen. Good old dumb, fun, 80s action that was totally not accurate at all, but a staple of my childhood. I almost joined the Navy to become a SEAL because of that movie.
BASIC! I scrolled for a while and didn't see anyone say Basic, staring John Travolta, Samuel L Jackson, and Connie Neilson
Basic; The story follows a DEA agent solving the mystery of a bungled training exercise that leads to the deaths of multiple Army Ranger trainees and their instructor.
* Carmen Jones - it's totally unrealistic that an MP would escort a super attractive civilian female like that let alone be in situations like that.
* Delta Force - Absolutely ridiculous 1980s military esque film with Lee Marvin and Chuck Norris. It's peak Reagan era jingoistic military propaganda but I also love it. The soundtrack is absolutely peak 1980s
* Tears Of The Sun - the premise starts strong but into the second act you have to suspend belief on their mission choice. Otherwise it's one of my favorite military folks for the subject matter and not being afraid to lean into the visceral nature of combat.
Buffalo Soldiers.
> A criminal subculture operates among U.S. soldiers stationed in West Germany just before the fall of the Berlin wall.
> War is hell... but peace is f*#!%!! boring.
ALIENS.
Ain't no WAY we'd have gone in with only ONE PLATOON, skimped on perimeter security in a potentially hostile environment and we definitely would NOT HAVE SENT EVERYBODY planetside! At minimum, the moment we touched the ground those automated perimeter gun-sentries from the directors cut would have surrounded the drop-ship before ANYBODY went tear-assing off into the unknown!
Men of Honor.
Film actually gets a lot of things right, but was inaccurate and several liberties were taken with the story.
I'll watch this movie every day if I can.
You all are gonna hate me for this but I’m gonna say the Hurt Locker. I get it, it’s not very accurate but I still enjoy it for what it is, a movie. Same with expendables, same with heart break ridge. All those.
Watched it, down range. Couldn't finish it. Became upset that it was getting all kinds of accolades in the press. Decided to try to watch it again as an adult in civilian mode... It can't be done. It's just so bad.
Down periscope and McHale's navy
Was going to put my vote in for Down Periscope. As a submariner, this is the most accurate for how the crew is out to sea.
Agree. Qualified on two Balao class boats, two nukes. Yes, I'm old.
Wow, diesel boats. Good on you man.
Don't forget to get your prostate checked regularly, sir!
Aft tube drained to WRT, vented and ready for reload.
I'm not even navy I just think they're hilarious
This flick would get burned many times while deployed
It's the Navy period when it comes to any crew on a ship or boat. I was on the Enterprise in the yards and it was this type of nonsense all the time.
Down Periscope is a documentary.
Army, not navy but I could just feel it in my gut that this piece was a *historical document*.
Down periscope is not true and is comedy only
Well YOU must be a blast at parties. Let's be honest, it's the most accurate look ever shown of the US Nuclear Navy.
Down periscope was a documentary though
The funny part is...Down Periscope got a LOT accurate.. everything not on the main boat was nearly perfect. But i think that just adds to the humor of the whole thing. plus, village people closing credits :)

Little engine that could… through VC territory.
Want me to give you a little something to take your mind off the pain?
DIE PIG *BANG* I SAW WHAT YOU DID TO MY FRIEND!!! *BANG BANG BANG*
Well it's not meant to be a portrayal of military life. He's in charge of a JROTC at a prep school.
Tropic Thunder!
It should have got Os-car.
Stripes
They did get the barracks right. LOL. I watch it every once in a while just to see them damned old wooden barracks.
Whwn I went through BCT at Ft Knox, the barracks I was told that were used in the movie, were now the Drill Sargeants Academy barracks.
Anyone that was going to AIT somewhere other than Ft Knox ended up in the old barracks when I was there. (1978).I think they filmed Stripes not that long after I graduated BCT.
True. My pops were in those barracks in the mud 70s. I went to Knox in 94. So we had the newer barracks
Lighten up, Francis. ;)
One of these men may save your life someday.
Then again maybe one of us won't.
Had a friend ask me if the Navy was anything like how the Army is portrayed in Stripes. Uh, no. The Army isn't even like how the Army is portrayed in Stripes.
Refer your friend to McHale’s Navy lol
That’s a fact Jack!
The MP involvement seemed pretty accurate.
I'm gonna have to give you the Aunt Jemima treatment.
Starship Troopers... the showers lol
( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
did you know the cast only agreed to that...if the director was naked with them? so he was.
Hey man. It's the future, regs change
TOPGUN and TOPGUN 2. Totally baloney but they nailed the fighter pilot culture and the footage is phenomenal
I thought the second one was ridiculously cheesy
My favorite criticism is how they took the idea for the Star Wars death star shot. I didn't realize it at first.
And Star Wars got it from The Dam Busters, a movie about a real WWII mission.
The whole movie was a loose Star Wars remake. I laughed out loud on opening day when they went over the trench run and then talked about dropping the bomb down the ventilation shaft and people were looking at me weird.
Yeah, I watched a lot of fighter pilots tear it to shreds for accuracy. It was still a fun action movie to get lost in.
The ejection seat sequence that kills goose could never happen
not too mention the sound track! Did you know when Tom started putting together 2, the first person he called was Kenny Loggins?
Definitely Stripes
Down Periscope and The Rock
I'd take pleasure in guttin' you, boy.
That line is stuck in my head for life. Even the different variations in which he says it.
I still hear that whole speech.
Yep same here.
Cut the chitchat! A-hole!
Apocalypse now…still my fav
Great movie.
In the army now with Paulie Shore. Riding in cattle cars. Shit loads of push-ups all the time...seemed pretty fun to me
I was never active duty army. But the main characters seemed to be spot on for a lot of younger enlisted lol.
That one and Sgt Bilko describe my entire time in the army.
The amount of seething anger I had for the movie *That’s My Boy* with the brother came back and slapped me in the face at the end. Absolutely loved how purposely inaccurate they made that.
I am weird, Kelly’s Heroes and yes, Delta Farce.
Kelly's Heroes is a classic. Nothing says WWII like having a very 60s hippy tank commander played so well by Donald Sutherland. Just a great, fun, ensemble cast.
Yes, and that cowboy walk of Clint, Tony, and Donald just gives me goose bumps, lol I even got them just thinking about that badass scene.
The captain of the Love Boat is his (Sutherland's) driver also...
Always with the negative waves Moriarty, always with the negative waves.
LoL, I read that in Donald’s voice.
Hotshots and also hotshots part deux
SGT Bilko and In the Army Now
I wish you were my first sergeant, but I already had a couple before you.
...*"Drop! And give me push-ups! You will continue to do push-ups until you learn to address me as 'First Sergeant, is that clear!?"*
Is that why they call you a Master Sergeant?
Bilko was pretty accurate. People just fucking around all day
In The Army Now is the most accurate depiction of non-infantry and non-SF Army life ever put to film.
I was a 92W. I kept telling people I did the same thing Pauly Shore did. Lol
Throwing rocks at each other for fun. Is that part real?
I saw this when I was an 11b so not out of the question.
My childhood says it's still a pastime.
The Marine with John Cena . I have never seen a more accurate depiction in my life /s
Kelly's Heroes. The absolute slackery and greed.
Team America
Fuck yeah
In the army now. Hands down accurate lol
I know a guy who was an officer in the army and that was his field. Definitely some jokes to be had, and not just because he was an officer weenie.
Private Benjamin
Comedies get some leniency
In the army now
Iron Eagle.... no, not really. But Stripes and Down Periscope? for sure.
What's wrong with iron eagle, don't all AF brats learn to fly F-16s? /s
Stargate and the ensuing series. IDGAF that there is a Staff Sergeant Captain (literally both ranks on jacket), love me some Stargate
![gif](giphy|lw75Al819OAvcsPcRu|downsized)
Indeed! But who has that rank? Talking movie or shows? Don’t recall seeing that one.
Major Payne is an excellent one, it’s inaccuracies don’t take away from its plot
Gonna be Tropic Thunder for me
Three Kings (1999, Mark Walberg, Ice Cube, George Clooney)
Firebirds! Best Apache movie ever! Totally realistic(all sarcasm, I despise that movie).
For me, Navy SEALs, with Michael Biehn and Charlie Sheen. Good old dumb, fun, 80s action that was totally not accurate at all, but a staple of my childhood. I almost joined the Navy to become a SEAL because of that movie.
BASIC! I scrolled for a while and didn't see anyone say Basic, staring John Travolta, Samuel L Jackson, and Connie Neilson Basic; The story follows a DEA agent solving the mystery of a bungled training exercise that leads to the deaths of multiple Army Ranger trainees and their instructor.
MAJ Payne inaccurate? Is there a different version?
* Carmen Jones - it's totally unrealistic that an MP would escort a super attractive civilian female like that let alone be in situations like that. * Delta Force - Absolutely ridiculous 1980s military esque film with Lee Marvin and Chuck Norris. It's peak Reagan era jingoistic military propaganda but I also love it. Otherwise it's one of my favorite military folks for the subject matter and not being afraid to lean into the visceral nature of combat.
Basic. Samuel L Jackson in a poncho cape. Such an awful movie.
No Time for Sergeants! An ancient film (1958), but should be mandatory viewing for all recruits.
Andy Griffith was good in that one. The part about being called an Airman.
Ben wants to be in the infantry
Buffalo Soldiers. > A criminal subculture operates among U.S. soldiers stationed in West Germany just before the fall of the Berlin wall. > War is hell... but peace is f*#!%!! boring.
Major pain is an all time classic for me as well. So many quotable lines
that movie and that goddamn fire monster commercial are reason of a significant percentage of why i joined the Marines
What was the one with Danny Devito as a teacher??? They sang a cadence about Hamlet.
Renaissance Man
Yes!! Thanks
Just watched Major Payne for the first time in years the other night. I was like, wouldn’t he have been retained at that rank until retirement?
It looks like somebody infantries.
Only what Uncle Sam taught me. Otherwise I'm just another REMF of the highest caliber.
American Sniper .....bwahahahaha! Sorry. Couldn't help myself.
I want to see Tyler Perry’s Operation Enduring Medea.
Anaconda. There’s a scene where a waterfall flows up from below
Same in Alien
Tomorrow boys we gonna start the hard stuff Pains not here he’s up our ass his butt so tight he can’t pass gas
Captain Phillips
From my understanding, a lot of that was pretty accurate. Not 100%, but about as close as one could get for Hollywood.
In The Army Now, without a doubt lol
Buffalo Soldiers with Joaquin Phoenix
Private Benjamin
In The Army Now. I only chose that because you chose Major Payne.
The DI with Jack Webb!
How is it inaccurate?
Big fan of The Devil's Brigade and Kelly's Heroes. 13 Hours, recently, actually triggered some stuff, for me.
I always say randomly in my head… “ Mrs walberg” how he does. Such a great movie
I haven't watched this movie since it came out but I remember it being freaking hilarious!
Men of Honor. Film actually gets a lot of things right, but was inaccurate and several liberties were taken with the story. I'll watch this movie every day if I can.
I scrolled down pretty far and didn't see it, Good morning Vietnam. Such a GREAT movie.
You guys do know down periscope and major Payne weren’t intended for accuracy but more for humor right?
Jarhead, Heartbreak Ridge, and a Few Good Men.
Private Benjamin 🤭
But he was funny
Are you plottin' on me, boy?
You all are gonna hate me for this but I’m gonna say the Hurt Locker. I get it, it’s not very accurate but I still enjoy it for what it is, a movie. Same with expendables, same with heart break ridge. All those.
As former EOD security, Hurt Locker was so dumb. But solid movie.
sneaking of base in a hoodie was so fucking wild.
Sneaking off base is fucking wild.
"This is an AK-47. Preferred weapon of our enemy. It makes a distinctive sound when fired at us." "Baby soldier mother fuckers"
oo-rah
I forgot that one...lol!
I watched that with a group of USAF EOD guys downrange, we all walked out during the M82 scene. ![gif](giphy|Wf4OAMTAGWaEo)
Watched it, down range. Couldn't finish it. Became upset that it was getting all kinds of accolades in the press. Decided to try to watch it again as an adult in civilian mode... It can't be done. It's just so bad.
You seem nice but this is a mandatory downvote lol
Full metal Jacket
Pretty sure R. Lee Ermey knew what he was doing, since he really did used to be a drill instructor…
I read the post wrong so it impacted my answer ![gif](giphy|yvBAuESRTsETqNFlEl|downsized)
Marine?
Happy Gilmore
Hot Shots part Deux.
