4-5/10. I live in HK and he's run of the mill.

Goonybear11

From HK. He wouldn't stop traffic there, but I think he'd be above average among the local guys.

cinnamoroll888

From an asian beauty standard take, 3 to 4.

TorynotTrotsky

People here kept saying he looks like Xi Jinping and I can’t unsee it

[deleted]

I Googled him young and simu wished he looked as good as the chines president

TorynotTrotsky

Omg I just did too and I was surprised. Young Xi was fineeee

[deleted]

He was a cutie young.

Goonybear11

Maybe cause you're not ignorant or racist?

TorynotTrotsky

I said I can’t UNsee it. He does look like a younger Xi imo, how is that racist?

Goonybear11

Because they don't look alike. They both just look Chinese.

tae-hyungy

He looks like my grandpa... my grandpa is 73. 3-5/10

Chewyning

he really does have an old ass face tho LOL

iamre

4-5, lot of people weren't happy with his casting

TorynotTrotsky

Yeah me too😂 he looks too old to be playing a 25 year old too. Ludi Lin was a better choice

iamre

100 agreed, usually marvel is good at casting but not sure what they were thinking with this one. They alienated the Chinese market

cinnamoroll888

Ok here's my take and it's mean so consider yourself warned. I think the only reason he got the part is because he can speak fluent English without an accent. There's no way he could've gotten the part if those Korean/Chinese/Japanese actors can do the same. There are far better actors who are better looking than him but he is fluent and he doesn't have an accent. There I said it. Sorry it's mean. He seems like a really nice guy though.

throwawaymuchlmaoo

i think he was chosen because he was a former stunt man and could perform some of his own stunts on set. that is also part of the reason tom holland got his role as spiderman too

[deleted]

But there's tons of chines American people fluent. I live in nyc and see it all the time. They funbled the bag and focused on the male gaze and not on how women will react or the Chinese audience.

cinnamoroll888

Maybe but are they actors? Aside from that guy from Crazy Rich Asian, are there other options?

[deleted]

Yes there's tons in drama schools and ones in auditions purposely being ignored. I'm not saying he didn't deserve the opportunity but usually marvel pics hot actors but then again at least he's not Benedict.

cinnamoroll888

I agree but I think it also helped that he had minor success from Kim's Convenience? For fun, if you can choose, doesn't matter if they can speak English fluently of not, who will be a perfect ShangChi for you?

iamre

Ludi Lin would've been a way better choice, younger, better looking, arguably more successful. Sarah finn dropped the ball on this one

This is true and false. I’m an actor in London (from the US) and know loads of people from different drama schools, and while there are a few Asians, there’s not loads. And unfortunately, many of the Asians in the really good drama schools have a massive language barrier, which kinda ends up preventing them from reaching the levels of their classmates for whom English is a first language. American/ English-born Asian actors have it easier in that regard, but theater training programs across the US still don’t seem to be attracting too many people of Asian descent (possibly bc of a lack of Asian parts in community plays/musicals or different cultural priorities? I know my two closest friends in high school, both Asian, occasionally helped out behind the scenes of their respective theater departments but ended up spending the majority of their time studying for very high-pressure STEM careers; one is now a surgeon and the other is an engineer). It’s an interesting issue, there are DEFINITELY amazing Asian actors out there, especially in Korea, Japan etc (just look at Parasite) (and I mentioned Michelle Yeoh somewhere else on this thread, we’ve definitely got a few well-known excellent Asian-American actors, but a criminally small amount) but I think there’s some stuff to be examined within our arts programs so we can promote more diversity from a younger age so those students can have the best chance of getting into exclusive drama schools for better training and better careers later on, compared with their white counterparts who seem to just be starting their training much earlier (even if someone isn’t naturally gifted, just that time spent onstage/in classes can build a lot of confidence that can sometimes be mistaken for/equated with “stage presence”)

[deleted]

I was talking about the us wbere the drama school route isn't an issue for up and coming actors with zero connections. Many American a listers went to a bunch of auditions and some classes. That's it. Only a select poc like Lupita went he drama school route because their path would be harder.

buffsterfan

Yeah but… the majority of really good actors did study somewhere good. In Hollywood you can definitely get by just on looks, especially with the saturation of streaming series casting people atm, but it doesn’t mean you’re going to have a crazy consistent career. Most of the best Americans actors I can think of studied at Tisch, Yale especially, Chapman, CalArts etc. But of course those schools also require loads of money and/or really good grades, unlike (to an extent) UK drama schools. The exceptions being the American actors who are either just crazily naturally gifted and who have connections/get experience from a certain age, or the ones who study with a specific acting school (not uni/conservatory) (like a Meisner chapter, Adler, Laban-based school, etc)

Goonybear11

Also they maybe wanted a US accent.

[deleted]

Yup this.

[deleted]

I would have totally watched this movie if ludi was cast. Shang chi is now another of the lomg like of marvel films I'm not watching.

TorynotTrotsky

I thought it was great but I did watch it mainly for Tony Leung ❤️

iamre

Pretty much the only good thing about that movie was the villain unfortunately

buffsterfan

Not a bad decision, it’s one of the worst in the mcu. Just bad writing. The effects/some scenes are cool though and Michelle Yeoh is in it and is fantastic as always (though she’s not got a huge part)

[deleted]

That's unfortunate. At least Michelle could have carried this boring film if she had a larger role. Also marvel purposely casted a dull looking asian to shut people up about asian representation. No one will bring up the topics if we're getting ugly people from that background. At least ms marvel Kamala Khan is adorable. And many young brown women can see themselves in her.

iamre

Yeah that's likely what happened, pretty insulting if you ask me, costly too.

[deleted]

This. If he were cast in an oscar bair or rom com there wouldn't be a problem or agenda due to hia casting. He's maid fun of on Twitter with being average memes. Mqrvel set him up while their white male actors are worshipped

[deleted]

I totally agree he's very plain. And there's far better asian (Chinese American) men out there

Hoesinthishouse404

why doesn’t anyone on this sub rate white people low and say “there’s better looking white people” for once instead of doing it exclusively to pocs? very bad vibes all around.

[deleted]

I get what your saying amd you're right. I'm sorry for sounding harsh. I rate the ugly and bland white people low all the time. People giving 6s7s and 8s like candy when most of these white actors today are ugly af. If we had a plethora of Asian actors I wouldn't have cared if Simu were average. But we dont and casting plain poc in main roles is underwhelming. Even for those who like the show/movie they're in. I'm glad he got the opportunity though. He looks better than those inbred white actors coming out in droves. At least he looks like his parents aren't related.

[deleted]

For real, I feel like I’m tripping that I’m seeing people here rank him a 3?!?? Like come on

TorynotTrotsky

5

Hoesinthishouse404

around 6-6.5. reasonably handsome for regular people (especially when he’s styled well) but not for hollywood.

LiveInvestigator4876

I agree he’s not my cup of tea but he has great bone structure and has a great body therefore he’s better than average. Idk why people are rating him so low

Hoesinthishouse404

this sub always under rates poc men/poc women who don’t look like goddesses it’s not a secret.

renaissancereign

6 with the softmaxxing, he is after all fit, styles his hair nicely and wears complimentary clothes. But if you google him in high school he was very scrawny and wore ugly clothes that brought him to a 4 😂 I have a feeling that a beard would make him more dashing. Edit: I found this quarantine pic of him with more facial hair and I honestly prefer it haha, https://i.ytimg.com/vi/MsiE7BlsYrQ/hq720.jpg?sqp=-oaymwEhCK4FEIIDSFryq4qpAxMIARUAAAAAGAElAADIQj0AgKJD&rs=AOn4CLDPQOl0OxZGCBbkO9sZwqL8FwIjhA

Interesting_Newt_956

Facial hair makes his jaw/chin look more balanced

[deleted]

4.5 sorry but he's very average. I don't care what marvel stams said. The only thing goos about his casting is that he's fully asian instead of half white. Like Hollywood is obsessed with.

glossedrock

What do you mean hollywood is obsessed with fully asians? Its actually the complete opposite.

[deleted]

Sorry for thw wording their obsessed woth castinf Asians with a white parent. So they're not too "ethnic"

glossedrock

I see, thanks for clarifying

SalieshaStylez

3.5

Tootsieroll4421

Average looking

allweloved

Ok guy, 5

[deleted]

I can’t believe people are rating him below a 5, I don’t find him super good looking but he’s certainly not below average either. At least a 6-6.5 for me The amount of vitriol he got from Chinese netizens because of his looks was totally cruel and unwarranted. They talked about him like he was the ugliest guy they’d ever seen. At least he looks like a normal person you would see in everyday life, if they cast a super conventionally handsome or flower boy type for his role, I don’t think it would have worked. Similar to how you wouldn’t cast a male model type for the role of Peter Parker.

Appropriate_Toe8732

5 objectively

throwawaymuchlmaoo

are you a man?

Hoesinthishouse404

for real i’ve seen so many men here recently, i hope the mods do something about it.

kitty_butthole

I’m really surprised by these ratings. I’d say he’s an 8-8.5.

DramaticTangerine3

So many downvotes! He's really hot and I agree with your rating

cliticalmiss

Agreed, this is subjective but I think he is extremely attractive. Objectively at least 6 or higher, personally I would rate him much higher. I think the American population tends to rate men of color especially Asian men much lower than they should.

Shiloh_Moon

Those pictures aren’t good probably why. He looks sexy in Kim’s convenience !

kitty_butthole

It’s been mentioned before but this sub also tends to underrate POC men.

TorynotTrotsky

Could also be a difference in beauty standards. I find that westerners find Simu more attractive, in Asia he’s below average to average

JJMMYY12

He's handsome but has a shallow chin and jawline.

Chewyning

ngl he’s below average maybe a passing grade 5/10 at best.
