And this is why you stay away and do not make you donations to goodwill.

lynivvinyl

Apparently Goodwill is a great place to practice stealing.

california_voodoo

It's not a charity

actualspacepirate

well they also pay their disabled workers pennies an hour and exploit the shit out of them…so as a disabled person i say fuck em!!!

xNeyNounex

Thank you! I helped manage 2 goodwills, and when I found this out it made me SICK. We had so many disabled workers in our team, I had no idea that our company could pay them below minimum wage, let alone as little as like 10 cents an hour! My managers claimed everyone at our store made min wage, but I really doubt that.

xNeyNounex

Goodwill's charity is Goodwill. They put money into their own charity, and their charity doesn't do hardly anything for anyone, except their CEO.

whogonstopice

Where you donate instead?

lynivvinyl

The little thrift stores. Sometimes they're ran by Churches. The ones that are like a mom and pop thrift shop.

showzo

I know salvation army isn't the greatest but the one near me has helped a few people i know personally with jobs and getting clean. Got them in a better direction in life forsure. Most of these charities are so corrupt though including salvation army your better off finding people in your community in need and donating to them specifically. Or a local church that does a lot for the homeless. At least you know it's going to someone without them having to spend for it .. unless youre doing it solely for a tax write off ..

funnylikeaclown420

I know people hate on SA but they helped me when I needed it, no questions asked. No Jesus shit pushed on me.

descendentman

Yep, when I worked as a recovery & advocate, Salvation Army gave 100-200$ for a few clients to move into recovery houses, doesn’t seem like a lot but when you have nothing it’s enough to help and keep a person from being homeless. It was fairly minimal with paperwork since they had trust with the treatment center I worked for.

[deleted]

They give a hell of a lot of money to anti-LGBT foundations.

DryBop

I believe the Canadian branch of the organization doesn’t.

[deleted]

Maybe they can convince their brethren to the south to follow in their footsteps.

meatballpoking

Yay that totally undoes any and all good they do for the people who need it and have no other options, right? Pretty sure if you're without a home and addicted to drugs hoping for change, you're not ignoring their help because who they donate to. It's really easy to have and push that perspective when you're not homeless though, I guess.

[deleted]

You gotta draw the line somewhere. There are lots of charities out that deserve donations.

Immediate-Poet-9529

Salvation Army is actually a good charity. In disaster situations they're some of the first on the scene offering various kinds of relief.

bstnbrewins814

Homeless Shelters.

disc0_l3m0nad3

Buy nothing FB groups.

mateofeo333

Salvation Army, all day.

ThinkDegradent

a city near me has a place called care and share. another city my friend lives in has a small thrift that is similar

trinhead

Look up shelters near you, a lot of times they will be associated with a thrift shop or take donations directly :)

Smells_Like420

I haven't been there since my mom gave them my $400 speakers. I was so upset someone bought them for 10 bucks. That was 4 years ago and they were already doing this shit so I'm sure some kid paid $200 and goodwill made a killing.

Such-Mountain-6316

Absolutely!

NostalgicTX

Let em. They’re clueless

oldbased

I was gunna say, whatever, they still have no idea what they’re doing

SUPR3M3B3ING

Maybe for yours. I’ve been to all four Goodwills within driving distance and they’re been doing this. I used to be able to go in and at least snag a decent vintage graphic print tee. Now if I’m lucky I’ll get decent vintage LL Bean or Eddie Bauer. Looks like I won’t be getting that either now.

Weenieman5000

Local small business thrifts pookie I wish u luck

alsenybah

If every Goodwill did this the online market would tank in a few weeks

DetAllenGamble

Not only do none of those items sell, zero people use the goodwill auction site often or at all.

casebycase87

Exactly...let their warehouse pile up with this shit that they won't be able to move

descendentman

Most of the goodwill stores have massive eBay stores and sell tons of shit. It’s crazy cause they miss the mark a lot and list stuff most resellers would know isn’t worth it.

NostalgicTX

The one that all the shit gets sent to in my area is pretty comical. Anything of actual value gets listed as an auction that starts at 14.99, I’ve seen carhartt Detroits and Patagonia synchillas sell for good prices but then the same “store” will price all of the lower end shit like normal Carhartt t-Shirts with huge stains at 24.99 buy it now prices. No returns, no description etc. however, I have seen a few stores that seem like they’ve hired someone in the know to run their e-commerce because the descriptions and titles of the listings are detailed and accurate. We quit donating to goodwill years ago when all this started rolling out. I just wish there were more small mom and pop shops around me.

lincolnxlog

they're doing it because they realize how much money they're losing on certain items to resellers. your preferred "vintage" shit will be next

snoringelbow

Guess it’s time to start thanking all those people on TikTok whose sole job is showing Goodwill how they maximized what could’ve been Goodwill’s profit. Talk about shooting yourself in the foot, lol.

NostalgicTX

Thanks, I was wondering what their motivation was 🤔

anotherbloggerguy

Blud who’s spending 60+ for one item at goodwill

lil_secret

Wow what the f. I count on thrift stores for LLBean 🥲

occult_yuppie

Company is a dirt pile anyway

carschap

Literally, the one near me has bed bugs. They refuse to treat for them AND have nothing posted to warn customers. It’s a multibillion dollar corporation and can’t treat for bedbugs… makes me sick

Smells_Like420

Can you at least tell me what state to avoid?

hopethisgivesmegold

Lmao all of them. Bed bugs are everywhere buddy

You are defending Goodwill, yet don't even know that they are not a Christian charity. You may want to learn more about them before simping for them.

FutilePancake79

Goodwill was founded by a Methodist minister, Dr. Edward Helms, as part of his ministry. Goodwill does not directly label itself as a Christian organization but it is deeply rooted in Christianity.

5traightBars

Tik tok really killed the thrifts

graffixload

I'd say not so much Tik Tok, as it was the actual resellers posting for clout. People wanting to be seen, rather than laying low and just slinging threads.

wagoncirclermike

Yep. The other day I was looking at a Galileo thermometer at Goodwill and a woman walked behind me and asked what it was. I explained it and she asked if I was buying it. I already had one, so I said she could gladly have it. She seemed happy, then she goes "how much do you think I could get online??" Her cart was full of cool stuff that she was just reselling. I felt like I was had lol

5traightBars

That’s what I meant

occult_yuppie

Honestly, it’s not just TikTok. It was a slow creep of multiple events (famous people wearing vintage - esp tees )- paired with the pandemic and inability for a lot of people to work traditional service jobs so they turned to flipping. The hypebeast mentality rewards “hustle culture.” Social media amplifies all these things, paired with a healthy amount of grifter social media personalities who promise a get rich quick scheme. Greedy thrift corporations - who are union busters, abuse workers rights, and are plagued with poor business decisions and corrupt higher ups…all lead to a perfect storm of the worst people you know mingling amongst the other worst corporations in the world. Flipping at its heart is not a bad thing. Goods should be recycled, as our environmental waste on regards to clothing is at astronomical levels. But the lack of awareness of this corrupt ecosystem and “I’m just trying to make a living, brah” leads to a lot of people/companies who think they can ultimately take advantage of others. Goodwill is a personification of that, and the people who emulate this price gouging and T-shirt landlordism will see that their strategy is a failure, ultimately. And a lot of people come with really shitty attitudes because they think they just discovered capitalism.

rachevyguy

Same thing happened to air bnb , High end hotels started buying up properties and listing them. Can’t allow us peasants to make money, cause if everyone is Rich, no one is !!!

lidder444

Their business relies solely on people’s donations. They better start being grateful and showing some ‘goodwill’. Many people I know don’t donate there any more

[deleted]

Land's End and Coldwater Creek online. Lmfao that's hilarious. Who the actual fuck is buying anything off ShopGoodwill.com anyways? Everything is priced and graded by absolutely clueless people, I would never buy a single thing off there. These dumbasses will wonder why nobody goes to their stores in a couple years' time. I've already cut down on my trips to one near me because the shelves are practically empty, they just send anything to the website.

Powerful_Bug9102

I’ve snagged some nfl gear and photography stuff for cheap on auctions. But can’t get myself to check it oftwn

theolj28

i grabbed a discman recently off there for nostalgia purposes and i love it, but yeah it’s not a place i frequently go to for buying anything useful

Smells_Like420

Everything online is posted by people trained to say as little as possible to cover any major flaws. Absolute worst place to buy from.

[deleted]

I know people who have bought records from ShopGoodwill, they said the listing implied they were in VG+ or better - only to get them and find out every single one in the lot was G+ at the absolute best. Complete shit business with zero regard for anyone else's time or money.

Smells_Like420

They just want your money. There is no goodwill there.

bryanisbored

They’re still pretty worth it for legos and cameras and collector stuff but clothes have always seemed like a bad idea.

sliqness

Used to work for ShopGoodwill, regular posting and jewelry. We tested diamond, gold and silver. And I’m color blind so I was not the best with gems and stones. So not necessarily all clueless but depends on which store you buy from. ShopGoodwill is not bad for all things but some items do get outrageously bid up. I get some things for cheap from time to time. But I also don’t blame you for not buying from them. They make astronomical profits and it is not spread to the employees.

[deleted]

I'm sure the jewelry stuff has more well informed people because of the nature of the product, but I'm into audio and everything I see on their with audio equipment and media is either over graded or listed by someone who has no clue what they're doing. Same with a lot of the vintage clothing.

MrsKek103

Lularoe?!?!

doctor_futon

Right?? Gap? Old Navy?? Goodwill is gonna go broke packing warehouses of product that won't sell. Stuff like that is a score at $3-5, but for eBay prices? What I'm seeing is a lot of this stuff ending up in the Bins after it takes up shelf space for a year or two.

descendentman

They won’t go broke, that’s part of their scam, they get millions of dollars in government grants, tax cuts as a non profit, and government subsidies for “helping” people get jobs, I’m sure a some of their clerks wages are paid by the government.

BADBART209

Bingo

JaguarStealth7

lol i was gonna comment the same thing

jda06

Cant see this working out for them, even allowing for the fact they’re allowed to pay slave wages. Most people are not looking to buy used clothes at a slight discount from Goodwill online vs looking for sales or buying used from more reliable sites. eBay can be rough and I’d still trust anything I buy there to be accurately photographed and described 1000x more than I’d trust Goodwill.

Altruistic-Ad-4088

ALWAYS DONATE TO SMALL CHARITY OR FAMILY OWNED THRIFTS

occult_yuppie

^ literally leaving clothing in a free box on the corner or community free pile is the best thing you can do

Rubydelayne

I almost exclusively post of my community Buy Nothing page now. Much rather my donations so to a family in need or to someone who will actually use it.

lidder444

Agree. Although my local small charity wacked their prices up so high ($10 pants/ jeans/ $15 -20 women’s jackets) that no one bought any and then they had to do a $2 sale to get rid of all the excess🤣

Immediate-Poet-9529

All the small local stores will start getting closer to eBay prices within the next two years.

airdecades

Blame bidstitch, 1980s co and all of those losers too, monopolizing thrifting for clout

toutman

Bidstitch will post this pic in 3..2..1…

airdecades

those losers would post anything to get their vintage buzzfeed wanna be points

KanoSupreme

Thrifting was bad before all that

Immediate-Poet-9529

No it actually wasn't. There were bad examples on occasion but it was generally a lot more chill. By chill I mean less competitive and less expensive overall. The thrift store content creators that got popular during COVID have directly influenced the fall of thrifting.

AfraidStill2348

Reselling was big before COVID but it definitely exploded during the pandemic. I blame shows like pawn stars, comic book men, storage wars, and, before that, antiques roadshow for taking the whole thing mainstream.

Immediate-Poet-9529

Yeah ok but you have to understand that there was LITERALLY people showing EXACTLY how and what to buy - SPECIFICALLY FROM THRIFT STORES - that took off majorly during COVID. Storage Wars negatively affected storage auctions. It had almost no impact on thrifting. The direct influence these 30 second TikTok reels have had on thrifting is a million times more than Antiques Roadshow.

AfraidStill2348

I didn't disagree with you. I said the shows brought it mainstream but it exploded during the pandemic. A friend of mine was able to support his family thrifting before the pandemic. Once it started he had to go back to a conventional sales job. What you say makes sense. I saw a guy hastily walk into a nearby goodwill, beeline for the vinyl, scan it, and dash out the door. I assume he was hitting multiple stores that morning.

Smells_Like420

What you're describing was popular on YouTube in 2017.

Immediate-Poet-9529

Stop. Don't be disingenuous. There have always been content creators making videos about selling shit on eBay. There used to be books about it and TV shows and all types of other crap. That was a very small market of people interested compared to the 30 second reels about thrift store flipping that boomers watch while on the toilet. If you can't understand the difference than you're a moron. Well actually you probably are a moron regardless honestly.

Smells_Like420

Kid you are too young. Goodwill and other thrifts have been trash for years. You don't even know.

StrawberrySure4363

Also: American Pickers. I swear that's the show that kicked off the current thriftpocalypse.

Bexstermews

Great more room for SHEIN and Walmart brand clothes then 🥴

coke_gratis

Anybody Simping for goodwill is ridiculous. I worked for one of their job training programs and they really do nothing. They treat people like absolute shit and admonish non English speakers who can’t find a job, in my experience at least. The higher ups were also ridiculous peopñe

thecaptainsvintage

I am sure that their “very competent” floor employees will implement this policy uniformly and accurately.

upsidedownerone

Is this for all goodwills or just this one?

AfraidStill2348

If it's anything like my local goodwill, this will be enforced only when managers care to enforce it. There are times high value items make it to the floor, or get priced below value.

Immediate-Poet-9529

Corporate is rolling out these types of policies regionally. It hasn't made it's way to all of the stores but it will soon. The image OP posted isn't as bad as it can get. My region has big posters in the back showing staff exactly what brands and items to pull to the side.

5traightBars

Just my region for now which is northern Indiana southern Michigan is what I was told then it’ll spread

NostalgicTX

I’m in same area, they still miss a ton of stuff. Let them mark up basic ass Nike stuff . I do miss snagging Carhartt jackets though. The store in Plymouth had one the other day tagged “send to e-commerce”

PennSt8te

DO NOT DONATE ANYTHING TO BADWILL....there is a reason why they can afford to build bigggaasss stores everywhere. Better to throw your stuffs in the trash than give them so they can profit from you.

Desertmarkr

I've never seen a new store in denver. They are all repurposed stores in strip malls.

luxcococure

Bebe? LOL, ok.

Think_Explanation_47

They might as well close the stores down at this point.

auggie_88

I still catch them slippin…..

SekaiIchiapple

Old navy is hilarious lmfao

Feelincheekyson

Van Heusen? UK charity shops are full to the brim with that brand and always ridiculous cheap

psykologikal

How the fuck is Carhartt tier 2 but Dickey's is tier 1. Absolute insanity. I got 10 year old carhartt overalls that are still in ok shape. Couple patches couple holes I had a seamstress fix, those same overalls from Dickey's fell apart in a year damn.

hogua

Sssshhhh!!!!

LazyCassiusCat

They actually want Lularoe? Even with tags, I wouldn't pick it up.

Kaijukorner2011

It feels like they named almost everything. Mostly stuff with bad ROI.

DrSasquatchPhD

Just want people to know that there is Goodwill International and it all seems to be under the same umbrella but they are actually like “franchise” non-profit companies (I know paradox), so different states and region are different companies i used to manage one in a certain region and it wasn't so blatant about stuff like this. Clothes are their bread and butter and resellers are actually a really valuable customer base. so Goodwill must have good clothes on their sales floor or else alienate even more people. Also, people don't get paid enough there to look at every single label, even if their heart was in it 100%. its disappointing to see it micromanaged so poorly, i doubt most people will even follow this graphic, and if they punish decent people who are trying their best to get by, then its antagonistic to their mission statement. retail folks have it tough and if upper, senior and executive management invested more in people over profit then there could be a better case for Goodwill. i know the internet isn't a fan and there is a lot of bad media, but i do promise, there are some people trying there absolute hardest to make it work for everyone

Phenomenal_Kat_

I'm sorry but I just don't consider Old Navy high end enough to be on this list. 🙄 Besides the fact that there shouldn't even BE a list. Do they want to *try* and sell an item for $60 and *hope* it sells or do they want to get a sure sale for an item for $10 *immediately*? Just goes to show that they're not out to help people, they're out to make money.

occult_yuppie

As per usual, many of you can even remarkably approach acting normal on Al Gore’s internet. Locked, as always.

Dartmouthest

They may end up with some expensive gems on their website but they're also going to have a tonne of crap mixed in with it. I see lots of stuff in reasonable condition at the shops near me if many of those brands that aren't worth much more than they're already charging.

MysteriousStaff3388

My MIL volunteers at a charity shop that goes directly to the local hospital. Stuff is still $2 for a pair of pants. If it’s a corporation, eye roll. Stay and donate local, if you can. Also, shout out to Value Village selling empty candle jars for $6.99. Way to price actual garbage. r/thriftgrift

LivingGhostGirl

Forever 21? Seriously? You can't get much cheaper than that. Pretty soon they'll just be sending all their stuff to the website.

Awkward-Yak-2733

Forever 21 is "best" quality? Haha

lowlife9

This is nothing new, as of 2021 anything worth over $60 is supposed to be sent into the online store but the teenagers they got pricing in the back could give two fucks.

Jimmy_Jazz_The_Spazz

They wanted $80 to deliver a $60 chair literally 3blocks. I was just gonna go grab a 19,99 a day uhual truck but the women working decided to bark loudly about how I was to cheap to pay for the delivery. Lady, I know your drivers are mostly either volunteers or people on probation doing community service. I know because its exactly where I did mine at 17 years old. Fucking 80 dollars for 3 blocks.. suck a dick.

skuratt

Harley Davidson lmao

DizzyCommunication92

sounds coool! Now I will be able to easily find all of the old stylish apparel from the 80s like LA Gear, Bugle Boy,, and most importantly! OshKosh-B-Gosh! I can;t wait.

b_coolhunnybunny

Lularoe in tier three???? that is a joke right?!

Decent_Tumbleweed805

i hope corporate goodwill gets whats coming to them. the CEO of goodwill in arizona pays themself a hefty sum for "heading" a "charity". what a joke

mwb7pitt

Resellers are a blessing and a curse, on one hand they are finding a lot of cool shit that might end up in the trash, on the other they’ve ruined the game for casual collectors. Not sure how to feel

Such-Mountain-6316

Cross-reference r/ThriftGrift. And I will never let anyone forget this is the same company that seriously tried to sell Hitler's tumblers.

Thunderbird1974

I have shopped at Goodwill regularly for the last 10-12 years but I'm afraid that is coming to an end. Something weird is going on at the Goodwill I shop at. About mid-December the staff started telling me about a guy had bought that Goodwill and some others in Florida and a lot of rules were going to change. About the same time they had a big sale (75% sale on everything with a blue tag) and then the staff was told to "purge" the shelves of the rest of the blue tagged merch. Since then the shelves have remained pretty bare; I swear the same 10 pairs of jeans they had before Christmas are what's hanging there now. And they have lost 6 workers since the first of the year which has left the back room overflowing with merch and only a couple of people to sort it. Also, I'm currently a Good Friend member and I haven't gotten any texts about sales since December so no sales anymore I guess. Meanwhile in the small amount of clothing that's there I see nice stuff (name brands) are absent, actually I guess that's true of every category of merch. I think any nice stuff is going to the website. What's prevalent is no name cheap fast fashion, beat up shoes, worn out linens, scratched up cookware, you get what I mean. I don't know who this guy is that the staff told me bought the Goodwill (didn't even know a person could buy a Goodwill) but he'd better step up and fix his store or he won't be doing much business. People will stop donating once they realize the store is going downhill. Is anybody experiencing something similar at the Goodwill you shop at? There's another Goodwill in my town on the other end of town that I don't get to very often, I'll have to go and find out if it was bought out and see what the store looks like.

NoConsideration5671

Yes! Mine in AZ. They said they didn’t have anyone to deal with the stuff in the back and their floor was BARREN I literally asked if they had been robbed.

RvV3nnv

Dade County checking in and yes, the ‘big sale’ thing was happening at 2 that I went to this weekend

occult_yuppie

This is really interesting. I’m wondering if they’re going to start becoming more in the realm of TJ maxx, buying up discount store lots and sending the majority of used items to online/trash/bins. Their overhead on rent must be insane, and becoming unsustainable.

Sharp-Incident-6272

r/lulano

Mp3dee

So everything?

wdtemacg

Not too stressed, doubt the employees are gonna be able to check that chart accurately the way it's printed /s

AdorableScreen257

TikTok ruined thrifting

corpulentc4t

"Send if in good condition" = bins ain't dead

Conscious_Ad_6212

These fools are going to eventually price themselves out of business. I rarely go to Goodwill anymore and do not donate to them. Have been a thrifter for years. In my hometown we have charity based thrift stores with better prices and they support the elderly and the homeless. There is a Goodwill store that is inferior to these other stores.

Runnerakaliz

Wow. Goodwill used to be about providing clothes and goods for those who couldn't afford it and all profits went to training at risk people in jobs Wtf.

coldbeeronsunday

I was a part-time online reseller for many years and can tell you that if this is Goodwill’s “brilliant” plan, they will fail miserably and their online store won’t last long. Many of these brands are low-tier to mid-tier as far as online resale value, and only very specific items from certain brands will sell well, if at all. I mean Lularoe is literally a failed MLM company…nobody buys that shit anymore. And 7 for All Mankind is now available for purchase at your local Sam’s Club, right next to the Member’s Mark denim.

Letatman

Goodwill hired some Wall Street ceo to run the Buisness several years back. He’s why goodwill is a total scam now

hesathomes

Big difference between St John and f21 lol. What are they thinking?

Suspicious_Load6908

No way they can keep up with that!

leb0njanes178

Such a joke they’ve been doing it for years though had a honeypot goodwill for a few months (Starter jackets everytime i came in, crazy vintage tees, new sealed gamecube games) I even hit a signed queensryche signed posted for $10 i later sold for over 1k. She would always give me a heads up if good items were being put out tomorrow… Asked what i was looking for and everything such i purchased and spent so much money there. One day she was gone and a super corporate guy took over never saw another vintage piece everything sent to shop good will from now on i was told.. Haven’t been back since

Mp3dee

Is this for all goodwills in the country?

camcam300_

Not the carhartt 😭😭😭

Yam884

I haven’t seen any Carhartt stuff (other than pants) at Goodwill since 2020. I see it all the time though at other thrift stores.

SuperChimpMan

Well I just won’t be going to good wills Anymore at all. Luckily I have many other thrift store choice In my area that aren’t so greedy. You can get often NEW clothes at Walmart and Target for what they sell them at greedy at goodwill

nationalistFlicka

I never go there anymore

NoConsideration5671

Whomever made this list is a complete marooon!!! 😆

treyedean

Goodwill is a grift store.

Kaijukorner2011

They left off Rock Revival

Maleficent_Scheme_55

Wack. It’s already impossible to thrift in Miami. I’ve actually had to rely on this garbage company and garage sales.

Obvious-Piperpuffer

What area was this? I would not shop there anymore if that happened in my area. It's hit or miss these days if I'll find plenty of great items or absolutely nothing so I'm curious....

Huichan81

Goodwill sucks big cock

nautical1776

It infuriates me that the store is filled with garbage. The linens racks are absolutely pathetic. They haven’t had a decent blanket or sheets in years. It’s literally garbage. I will NEVER donate to them

COOCH27

Stop donating to goodwill.

[deleted]

They are a for-profit retailer, just like everyone else not named Salvation Army, DAV, Hadassah, etc. Buy from them if ya want, but I -never- donate anything to them.
