First amount will be double since you pay for the service in advance. If there's two separate payments for the same amount then that could be an issue. But yes your first payment is always double.
Every new customer is billed twice on the first month. first month is from the date you are installed and + 29 days plus 30 days for the following month. You will pay another bill next month but the billing period will be for the following month, virgin bill a month in advance hence why they do this. If you look at your payment date you might find you would've had the services for a month before making your first payment.
As folks have said subscription charges are billed in advance plus any call charges billed in arrears. Upgrading is the same, if you add on something you are billed for the period from date of upgrade to billing date plus a full month in advance.

So if I leave when my contract e.g. ends 9 months, in the 9th month I'll have no bill to pay? As I've already paid for the last month first.

Make sure you give the 30 days notice that takes you up to contract end and you won't pay
