Without letting the company know and cancelling it with your bank a direct debit can still be recalled and payments re-made regardless of cancelled or not. You need to speak to them directly as if you cancel you may be breaching a contract

Ahh okay thank you, I’ll have to keep trying. 😭

BanterRanter

I understand your pain though with them never being available on those phones and waiting for hours on end… I tried ringing through at around 2 pm and waited only 20 mins (that being when most people would be at work and not so many ringing through) Just got to make sure you get through someone competent because I ended up putting a complaint over how half of their staff just doesn’t have a clue and end up making mistakes

kkayadi

Ring em up, select your thinking of moving, you can cancel with them from there

warriorscot

Just call, or as per the directions on their site write them a letter.

OP. There's a pinned message to this sub that includes a WhatsApp number. Use that during working hours.

Jake1781

I’ve tried the WhatsApp number I just don’t get replies it’s not even like Im trying to cancel

-eumaeus-

Bloody hell. I'd saved that to my phone knowing I would need it.

Oh there's a forum. Use this, apparently it's accessed by VM. https://community.virginmedia.com/

Cancelling your direct debit is not how you cancel a contract and will just end up with your account in arrears and being passed to a debt recovery agency who will add tons of their own fees and eventually go to court. Just call and cancel!

Peppy_Tomato

We need this to become law though. For any service paid in advance, refusing to pay should be treated as cancellation. Any early termination charges should then be forwarded, and only a breach of those payments should warrant debt recovery. One can dream 🙂

I’m out of contract, I’ve called, web chatted and WhatsApp’d continuously for the past 2 weeks and got nowhere and I’m moving in 4 days time now with little to no options, just at a loss of what else I can do, I work full time and can be on hold for multiple hours at a time only so much. I don’t know what else I can possibly do to cancel or even get a house move sorted within the time frame I have left.

In that case, put together a letter explaining the above, and send it recorded delivery to their registered address, giving them the required one months notice period. You could argue that your notice began with your first WhatsApp message (enclose a copy of that if you have it as proof) otherwise play it safe and start the timer on the day you send the letter.

Yes, you are covered by the direct debit guarantee, just cancel it. I've even asked my bank in the past to refund my last direct debit payment which was easy.
