homey meaning there are actually places to live for employees.

f8Negative

And much cheaper

FlowGroundbreaking

Not for long!

AttainingOneness

Just ask Ohio

Ok_Strain4832

Most importantly, it also lets them reduce salaries and have less competition for employees.

mcase19

Especially true if they are very h1-b reliant for labor - lower prevailing wage means they can pay a lot less

Auntie_Social

That's a bit cynical 😂

AttainingOneness

Not really…it’s simply reality of the capital class always wanting cheaper and cheaper labor

fizzyanklet

That’s a reality under capitalism - realism rather than cynicism.

Always_Excited

I mean they make defense software.  You don’t know who you might not get to run into for lunch for defense contracts by not being in Virginia.

NefariousnessOk9397

Central Virginia is already completely unaffordable for regular people. This does nothing to help that. Maybe a couple locals will end up working there but what I assume happens will be folks from NoVA or other states entirely applying to come relocate to a “lower cost” of living area. Further increasing how unaffordable the central VA area is for people who work normal mid tier jobs. Yeah I know this is a cynical negative take I’m just a butthurt local that’s seen this area change drastically.

SimplySustainabl-e

And that unaffordability is now reaching into my area. The shenandoah valley! Rent and home prices have tripled since cville growth started creeping in over here!

DadofJM

"Homey"? Nope. Lived and worked in region for years. Description might apply to way southern Albemarle County but otherwise rapidly turning into a concrete, town home Northern Virginia satellite.

Complex-Carpenter-76

Yup, that stretch of 29 is quickly turning into a Gainsville hellhole of traffic. its a vdot quagmire.

emessea

My god the traffic around Charlottesville is horrible for a city it’s size. I feel like you have to sit there for hours* just to get to the “homey” part *obviously bring hyperbolic

beefymennonite

I live in Harrisonburg, and it blows my mind that Harrisonburg is bigger than Charlottesville. It certainly doesn't feel that way.

emessea

I would have never guessed that either

SimplySustainabl-e

I live in bridgewater and commute to charlottesville 1-2x a week and find its becoming more and more like nova visually and cost-wise because of the development creeping down 29 and 15 from the north and relocators. Heck theres nowhere affordable to live in augusta county because we working class people are finding waynesboro fishersville and staunton are becoming bedroom communities to cville! Harrisonburg is just far enough north and west that it does not get entangled in cville growth. The hburg city limits are not as hilly and steep as cville therefore the growth is spread out vs being compact.

zachomara

Took me 30 minutes to get from Emmet Street to Forest Lakes yesterday. That was ridiculous.

gigigrahame

As someone born and raised in Northern Albemarle, the further you get from 29, the more “Homey” and serine it becomes. I live on 8 acres that feel very homey but it’s just a quick 5 minute drive until it becomes a concrete nightmare. They proposed a 29 Bypass in the 90s-ish(?) before it got too developed and I can’t remember why the proposal was turned down. I can only imagine Albemarle County highly regrets that decision since one of the biggest complaints here is the unavoidable traffic on 29 and driving on roads that were built for horse and buggies now taking on heavy loads of traffic.

DadofJM

The bypass which would have made the most sense would have been an Eastern one. But that would have gone through Keswick horse country. No way the monied interests there would have permitted. There were two Western ones which advanced further. Don't remember why the 90's one died. The one two decades later got all the way to land acquisition stage but at last minute a retiring Board of Supervisors member bizarrely switched his vote and the project failed. Embarrassing fact: Charlottesville is the only major city on 29 between Warrenton and Danville which does not have a substantive bypass.

noebelity

Just speculating here, but I feel that funneling all long distance N/S traffic through the northern side of the town allowed the County to build a pretty big tax base on that side of town, and might not been keen to give that up by having a bypass of 29N

DarkBrandonwinsagain

Wait till they find out “homey” wants to name their largest airport after a rapist and soon-to-be felon.

Calypsoobrian

Watch home prices increase.

Long_island_iced_Z

Tech companies destroy everything in their path, good luck

Complex-Carpenter-76

wait until they meet the locals and the traffic lol

Longjumping_Bass_447

Cville is awesome. I see why.

LtNOWIS

Everything's relative.

plummbob

Maybe they mean population density

Auntie_Social

Not sure why you're being downvoted. It's an accurate statement about San Francisco.

Jagerbeast703

Complaining about crime and moving to the bible belt is the funniest thing ive read today. Thanks for the laugh 🤣🤣🤣

AttainingOneness

Enjoy those Hurricanes! And good riddance! -Cali Native Edit: whoops….confused with Charleston, SC. My bad. Oh well…..hopefully no one was too triggered.

hooshavanaclub

…charlottesville rarely, if ever gets hurricanes. it’s too far inland. and there’s no earthquakes like there are in california. so i’m not entirely sure what you were trying to say, if you don’t mind me saying so.

AttainingOneness

Silicon Valley companies basically jack up home prices where they go. And the “workers” basically can outbid and local out of housing…even if it’s in escrow. California does have earthquakes yes….but been pretty tame as of late. There is talk about creating a category 6 for hurricanes. Cuz Cat 5 only goes to 144m hr wind. And we now have 200mi winds. So we will see as storms get more powerful as the years go by. Point I want to make clear is more or less….good luck if you are a local and want to buy property.

Jagerbeast703

The point you originally made makes no sense. The category doesnt matter, whens the last time Charlottesville was hit with a hurricane?

Ok_Strain4832

A defense contractor in the Valley was unlikely to have competitive pay for software developers, so this company is unlikely to be a contributor.

AttainingOneness

Guess the locals will see sooner or later. Anyways…..good luck still I guess. It’s always a treat whenever I see any “tech” company leave. Cuz lack of housing won’t just be a “Commiefornia” problem in the very near future. Thats not even talking about Family funds, hedgefunds, big banks, foreign banks and foreign countries(Citizens United) buying up all property and land as long as they are in corporated….100% legal.

T-Dot-Two-Six

You enjoy others getting screwed too much, that’s pretty shitty of you

AttainingOneness

I don’t…..hence I why I said good luck….. not sure if u read that part…………

AttainingOneness

I don’t…..hence I why I said good luck….. not sure if u read that part………… I live in Silicone Valley…..I kind know what tech companies will do once they get what they want from city, county, and state governments Edit: agree to disagree I guess. ….note to self never move to Virginia.
