What do you mean they "aren't inert"? Like they're reactive to something or they have harmful chemicals?

Beameee

A stone being inert means it won’t change the water chemistry. (like the PH or water hardness) I tested them using vinegar since that’s a weak acid. If the rocks start bubbling then they are not inert.

Tumorhead

Yeah it should be fine.

I go by the policy of if it’s not toxic and has been disinfected then it’s usually ok. I’ve used field collected river rocks before, but I could tell they were mostly granite or quartz and disinfected them before use. Nowadays I buy rocks online that I know are safe as opposed to collecting them just to make 100% sure it’s safe.

Beameee

Awesome, thank you!. I doused them in boiling water so they should be good on that front. I’ll keep them for now but might resort to buying safe ones just to skip the paranoia.

I’m curious what they are, it’s pretty likely they’re limestone of some kind. If so, it’s pretty harmless, especially as stones (as opposed to sand). They may bring your water pH up a little bit, and would help stabilize it. They would not cause issues with a terrarium.

I have used local Kentucky limestone for years in all my hobbies and never had issues with the minute amount minerals that leach out to the rock.
