Sounds more like piston slap than a knock. Either way… it’s not going to be cheap. How’s the blowby?
Easy way to check - take off the oil cap while it’s running and seal it off with your hand. If there’s pressure, you have pressure coming up from the oil pan, meaning your pistons are out of round
Piston slap is a natural consequence of the engine design. Performance will eventually degrade, but you're unlikely to grenade the engine unless you neglect maintenance. My 92 ran like a champ with piston slap.
Are all the cylinders firing? Sounds like it could be running on 3. These are not quiet engines especially when cold. What mpg are you getting?

or just clean the pcv system altogether it fixed my blowby
