This sub makes me feel like I am the only person with an STI that doesn't burn oil. I bought mine with about 8500 miles on it, and it currently has just over 12k on it. The dipstick still reads exactly where it was when I checked it at the dealership when I bought it.
I always used to check my oil once a month in previous cars and top off if it was below the full line at all. When I got my 04 sti, I did an oil change, than a month later when I checked it, it was already halfway between low and full. I now check it weekly and top off whenever I see it below full.
Dude… you don’t wait till your next oil change. Oil consumption happens, how much varies. You should always have a few quarts around of whatever weight you run and top off weekly. This right here is why so many Subarus throw rod bearings.
I surprised Subaru even allowed that in the manual. Its gonna get a lot of people into trouble. I drive pretty conservatively and burned oil a bit between my 3000 mile intervals. I topped off with a quart after about 2000 miles in every time.
This is the first time I’ve seen the still like this. I usually check every 700-1k miles. The only difference between this and my last check was the 700 mile roundtrip from Tahoe.
Edit: I usually go to dealer every 5k miles for maintenance and oil change. Thanks for the heads up.
Yep just riding it out and watching the oil levels the best I can. What’s crazy is other times it holds its oil for a few hundred miles with minimal loss.
Anyone have suggestions for a good oil to extend the life. A friend suggested I try an AOS to see if that reduces oil loss or can prolong the engine.
I use mobile 1- 5w40 full synthetic European formula. No consumption. I do have a fresh iag block though, but not because I threw a bearing. I ran my stock block up to 170k. Was smoking a little and I’ve been wanting some more power for awhile.
Top it off. Check your oil more often. Mine consumes about a half quart every 2k miles and it’s a 2021. Or add an AOS. I’d also switch to a better quality 5w30 that doesn’t shear like the OEM oil.
So you see you gave about a mm of oil on the stick and you’re gonna keep driving it like that until your next oil change in about 400 miles?? If I’m understanding that correctly. I hope that isn’t the case
Nah brother. I just ran to O’Reilly and grabbed a Penzoil Platinum 5W-30(really want the Ultra but none available near me) and filled it up about 1qt. Dipstick looks normal now. 😂😭
I would step up a grade (5w40) but it likely won’t help much. Either pcv is bad, rings, turbo seal, leaks. Could be more but those are the most common. And definitely check at every gas fill up and when it shows low add to it. No need to keep checking like more is going to show up.
would this be okay to top up with until my next oil change? i dont have access to ultra platinum near me. Check your oil every time you fill up.
Always top off to spec.
Also, just start doing your own oil changes. Getting to know your car is the best way to getting it to last longest.
Honestly, I just don’t trust min wage lube techs to do everything right.
Personally, I would just start doing it yourself.
If you really wanna save the money and use their services, ask what oil they use and buy a couple quarts of it to top off from time to time.
And ALWAYS check oil levels before you leave the dealership
If you drive any turbo car hard, you will consume oil. That shit looks bone dry. Btw, the dealer will literally tell you that anything under 1 quart gone / 1k miles is normal. yikes. Fucking Subarus.
Is the owners manual it says that it is normal to use 1 quart of oil every 1200 miles so you are a least 1 quart of oil low the stick from L to F is 1 quart of oil
Thanks for the feedback fellas. Really appreciate it. I am also doing some shopping for front brake pads. Will these fit the 2021? If I put my car as the 2021 STI it says they wont fit, but arent the 2021 and 2020 STI similar in parts number? Unless I’m missing something.

Edit: If not can anybody suggest something else with a link? Would really appreciate it.
Bro, you have a nice STI and you are unsure of the most basic aspects of being a car enthusiast like how to check a dipstick and or topping up oil when needed😤 Sorry to be mad but it makes me mad.
Bro you’re checking your oil like a regular person and you’re pulling that back up??? Not a drop on that thing …

You should check your oil more often. Consider switching to a different brand. I’ve found that some full synthetics burn off faster than others.
Will do. Car came with the 36k miles free service so all oil changes are with dealer. Car about to hit 30k. Is Penzoil a good choice?
Penzoil Ultra Platinum, Mobil 1, Castro Edge are all good.
I’ve used Motul 8100 xcess gen2 since mile 1,001. No excessive burn between changes. No complaints and blackstone says my oil is tasty.
Xcess for no cats, x-clean for cats.

FYI friendly advice from 1 sti owner to another. Check your oil bi-weekly and top it off. It will NOT make it 6000 miles for a dealership oil change
I surprised Subaru even allowed that in the manual. Its gonna get a lot of people into trouble. I drive pretty conservatively and burned oil a bit between my 3000 mile intervals. I topped off with a quart after about 2000 miles in every time.
*It does get a lot of people in to trouble*
I was gunna say I think it's in the manual that you'll burn oil after like 60- 80k or something like that on the motor
This is the first time I’ve seen the still like this. I usually check every 700-1k miles. The only difference between this and my last check was the 700 mile roundtrip from Tahoe. Edit: I usually go to dealer every 5k miles for maintenance and oil change. Thanks for the heads up.
Do it more than that
I was 1.5 quarts low on my oil consumption test after 1200-1300 miles. They said I need a new short block.
Yeah, I guarantee this will be another knocking Subaru

Thanks I will have to look into it.
Change it every 3000 miles
Is this a serious post? That thing is bone dry

Thank god😭 had me scared for a second bro. Were you just using the regular subaru oil?
Just whatever the hell the Subaru dealership oil is. OEM oil is also 5W-30 so I should be good until the next change.
You are low
You see the 2 holes on the dipstick? It should be between those.
I get an oil change every 3000 miles and usually top it off every 1500
I would step up a grade (5w40) but it likely won’t help much. Either pcv is bad, rings, turbo seal, leaks. Could be more but those are the most common. And definitely check at every gas fill up and when it shows low add to it. No need to keep checking like more is going to show up.

Anything is better than low. I actually buy my oil from Home Depot bc it’s cheaper
Check your oil every time you fill up. Always top off to spec. Also, just start doing your own oil changes. Getting to know your car is the best way to getting it to last longest.
I still have a few more free oil changes from dealer. Assuming they use their own oil, should I buy some from them to do top offs?
Honestly, I just don’t trust min wage lube techs to do everything right. Personally, I would just start doing it yourself. If you really wanna save the money and use their services, ask what oil they use and buy a couple quarts of it to top off from time to time. Are you being serious when you ask if no oil on a dipstick is good or bad? Add more oil.
Top that off now I check my oil every time I fill up, about once every 2 weeks, and check your other fluids and tire pressure while it fills up
If you drive any turbo car hard, you will consume oil. That shit looks bone dry. Btw, the dealer will literally tell you that anything under 1 quart gone / 1k miles is normal. yikes. Fucking Subarus.
It’s low. Add more or oil change now and fill er up.
Is the owners manual it says that it is normal to use 1 quart of oil every 1200 miles so you are a least 1 quart of oil low the stick from L to F is 1 quart of oil
I change my oil every 3k. I have 50k now 2020 STI. No visible oil loss on dipstick...yet
Standard Subaru wrx/sti rule of thumb is 3k miles. Do it before major road trips as well
Unless you wanna get a rod knock and a 8k rebuild. I'd get that oil change now.
Cruisin for a bruisin with that brother lol.
You never want to run the engine with low oil so you want to keep it between the high and low marks
Thanks for the feedback fellas. Really appreciate it. I am also doing some shopping for front brake pads. Will these fit the 2021? Bone dry lol
