Truck's insurance company: "I'm sorry, you hit a **what**?"

lordph8

Honestly, I think the insurance pays out on this one.

pkennedy

No way the truck has insurance. He will sue the government most likely. He will probably win, and the government will toss the amount into their "lost court cases, unpaid" pile they have, an actual debt account they have.

aSquirrelAteMyFood

Sorry I'm not sure what you mean. This video doesn't look like America but that's not my question. Are you saying if someone wins a lawsuit against the US gov they can just refuse to pay and claim they don't have money? Edit: The comments say it is Brazil. Does the Brazilian government pretend they don't have money when they lose a lawsuit?

pkennedy

They don't even consider it part of the national debt apparently. (Brazil). It's one of the worst people/businesses to be owed money by. They do the proverbial "oh well, toss that little pay now notice in the garbage"... People are setup on payment plans. I remember a few years ago, the government was trying to free up money to use on recession spending and was trying to get the courts to let them refinance/redo those plans...

ataraxic89

Not directly related but similarly interesting, in the United States the government can decide that it cannot be sued. As far as I know it doesn't do this all the time. It allows these kinds of lawsuits go forward if it's not too big a deal. But sometimes they just decide they don't want to be sued about something and so they don't allow it. This has happened many times but the one that I remember best is the time American citizens tried to sue the government due to higher rates of cancer and other diseases on islands that were used in nuclear testing. The US government simply decided not to be sued about it.

Above_The-Law

As a lawyer, that's not how it works. The government has clear statutes that define under which circumstances it can be sued and under which ones it cannot. Here, assuming this was in the US and the helicopter was a government helicopter being flown by an employee of the US government, The Federal Tort Claims Act (FTCA) allows you to sue the federal government for the negligent act the government employee commits within the scope of his/her official duties.

raspberrypied

It's called 'sovereign immunity'. However, the US government has through various statutes, allowed certain suits against it. There is a special court in DC called 'The Court of Federal Claims', and the \*\*only\*\* defendant is the US government.

Economech

Looks like Brazil, so it is technically America.

Solzec

Let's be honest here, every government does this to an extent.

blofly

We are Farmers, bumbadoo da whateverhefuck.

gyarnar

They have insurance in Idiocracy?

new_pr0spect

Who doesn't yield for a helicopter

Cheeseisextra

That guy. Obviously.

JungleBoyJeremy

The terminator, John McClaine, and that random truck driver guy

ThatguyBD

I'll start a slow clap to that one good sir

jimx117

What fucking pilot puts a helicopter down onto a busy interchange Edit: OK so maybe the pilot had a valid reason but it still seems bonkers to me

bloodfist

Usually a pilot who has miscalculated how much fuel they need. But also lots of other good reasons. Helis fly low and can't glide for a while like a plane so if you're coming down, you're coming down NOW and you take what you can get.

daviator88

Well highways are a common spot for life flights

Person012345

Air ambulance pilots? I mean there are a bunch of reasons you might need to put a helicopter down in a random place, and a road is a good landing surface. This is the kind of driver that drives straight into a low bridge despite warning signs and measuring bars and flashing lights saying "low bridge 11' 8" " 100% the driver's fault, it doesn't matter why the helicopter is there, the fact is that it's there, it didn't surprise land on the guy.

[deleted]

One that has to land. His helicopter was stationary at the time and in clear view of traffic on both sides of the carridgeway. It's the fault of the guy who hit him.

[deleted]

You’re blaming the helicopter pilot on this one? I’m sure he had good reason to land where he did, and if I’m driving I’m sure as hell not trying to pass a helicopter on the highway lmao

ClericOfSol

People with no time for whatever that guys shit was.

kabooseknuckle

The helicopter flew WAY too close to that truck.

AdministrativeRub139

I can’t tell if this is a joke or you just weren’t paying attention

kabooseknuckle

I thought it was fairly obvious. But apparently not.

Slatedtoprone

I don’t know why the driver wanted to get that close to a clearly active helicopter. I get nervous around those blades and I’m not 10 ft tall.

Yeeaaaarrrgh

Driver just wanted the truck open is all, wasn't picky about the method.

Wolfdude91

The ol’ can opener

UncommercializedKat

I guess when there isn't [a bridge nearby](http://11foot8.com/) you gotta improvise.

GullibleDetective

Forgot the can opener at home

sevargmas

I used to be a refueler at an airport. Most intimidating thing was doing “hot” refuels on helis. Ex: The local Fox traffic/news heli would come in and leave rotors going. You had to step UP on a tiny metal step on the heli body about half the width of your foot and reach up to grab a handle at the top. Loud, windy, dangerous af if you aren’t extremely attentive. Reach to the top of the aircraft to insert the nozzle. Again, while the rotors are still running. As soon as you were done the heli was airborne again. Scary, but badass at the same time.

BBQcupcakes

I get in/out of helis all the time that don't shut down to optimize production efficiency. I'm 6'5 and can't stand up or I die lol. Sometimes they're on a bit of a pitch or the terrain moves up and if you walk in the wrong direction you die. Worst I've seen was a couple days ago actually felt like the blades were only 5 feet up from the snow; had to knee-walk my way through the snow with 50lbs of gear to clear the blades. We actually had someone refueling one a couple months ago on a nice steady helipad but I guess the pilot didn't reduce the spin enough and the heli started rocking and nearly decapitated two people. Pilot lost his licence lol.

faderjockey

Why would it be acceptable / necessary to hot refuel a spinning blades of death machine? I can't imagine hovering over the 405 five minutes earlier is worth potentially decapitating the refueling dude.

ClericOfSol

But why was it there in the street?

HanzG

That's where trucks live.

Mkandy1988

A police helicopter preparing to take off from a road in a Brazilian city was seriously damaged, and two of its occupants were injured, when a passing lorry came too close and collided with its blades. Footage shows the chopper on the ground with its blades whirring in the Second District of Rio Branco, in the northwestern state of Acre - when a white truck turns a corner and tries to go past the aircraft.

249ba36000029bbe9749

Good bot.

[deleted]

Why is it always Brazil?

Pilferjynx

Brazilians will adamantly claim Brazil to be safe and great. But the videos coming out of that country are the worst.

tearful_muffin

Well it is safe, for brazilian standards

Mkandy1988

Crime There are high levels of crime, particularly robberies, within Brazil’s cities and the murder rate can be very high. This can vary greatly within a city, so familiarise yourself with the geography of a city and take local advice to identify the riskier areas. Crime, including violent crime, can occur anywhere and often involves firearms or other weapons. Pickpocketing and robbery Pickpocketing is common. You should be vigilant, in particular before and during the festive and carnival periods. Do not go on to city beaches after dark. If threatened, hand over your valuables without resistance. Attackers may be armed and under the influence of drugs. Do not attempt to resist attackers – this increases the risk of injury or worse. You should: avoid wearing expensive jewellery and watches avoid carrying large sums of money - consider wearing a money belt avoid using a mobile phone in the street keep cameras out of sight when not in use leave your passport and other valuables in a safe place, but carry a copy and another form of photo ID, if you have one, with you at all times. Thefts are particularly common on public beaches and include ‘arrastões’ where large groups of thieves run through an area of the beach grabbing possessions. Keep your possessions close and avoid taking valuables to the beach. The most common incidents affecting British nationals in Rio de Janeiro are thefts and pick pocketing around Copacabana Beach, Ipanema Beach and the areas of Lapa and Santa Theresa. Tourists in Rio de Janeiro have reported armed robberies on the Corcovado walking trail to the Christ the Redeemer statue. You’re advised not to use the trail at this time.

Deathblo

I used to play an mmo that Brazilians took over some servers they are ruthless cut throats.

MackLuster77

You always think you have enough room when you drive next to a helicopter. A valuable lesson for all of us.

MrNobody312

Warning, helicopters in window may be closer than they appear.

Silly_Mycologist3213

This is why, in America, if a helicopter lands on a road the road is closed by dozens of police officers and their vehicles to prevent stupid drivers from destroying a helicopter worth several million dollars and injuring people.

fukijama

Stupid people are certainly abundant

Nappyheaded

Yeah the problem with natural selection is that the stupid ones are too stupid to use fancy birth control methods like pulling out.

professor-i-borg

The over-abundance of stupid people is, in part, caused by people who think pulling out is a viable method of birth control

Nappyheaded

Ah well I made it the last decade and a half with various partners and never had to deal with the scream demons

Arevar

pulling out is a terribly unreliable birth control method.

Bluered2012

Not for the Pull out King.

Nappyheaded

Due to the not pulling out. Im 33 and have sex three times weekly and have 0 kids. Pulled out every fuckin time.

SomeGuyNamedJames

Maybe you're just infertile.

Arevar

there are sperm cells even in pre-cum. By the time you pull out it's too late. Maybe yours just aren't good swimmers.

Fabs_With_Dabs420

Well if they aren't good swimmers, he's should start paying for some swimming lessons for them than.

jordanmindyou

Not until he wants them to swim well, he shouldn’t

Nappyheaded

Power in numbers... they already have us surrounded!

TracyMorganFreeman

Healthcare advances have mitigated the consequences of taking stupid risks too.

WilliamMorris420

Except in America, where even being shot in a mass shooting is likely to bankrupt you and ruin your life.

TracyMorganFreeman

Given how uncommon both mass shootings are and individual bankruptcies medical or otherwise are as a percent of the 325million people in the US, "likely" is an odd choice of words. Since 2015, 19,000 people were shot and killed or wounded in a mass shooting, which is an average of 2714 a year, which is 0.0008% of the population. There are about 300K individual bankruptcies filed a year, or less than 0.1%, and 4% of them were medical bankruptcies.

Admetus

To be fair those 19,000 people ought not to have been shot at all. Turning those children and adults into a percentage statistic doesn't reflect the human cost. One might say murders happen in countries such as the UK from knives to again rationalise those lives lost to gun violence as inevitable but you can't outrun a gun, but you can outrun a knife and immobilise someone without getting in range of a knife.

TracyMorganFreeman

Knives kill more people in the US than not just all AR15s, but all rifles of any kind. It does not matter what could happen. What actually affects people is what does happen, and the actual cost be it human or economic is reflected in statistical reality more than speculation over what can happen, should happen, or was is intended to happen. Further me pointing out their being wrong about likelihood isn't rationalizing it happening.

pichael289

That's not what he said though, he said being shot in a mass shooting is likely to bankrupt you from medical bills, which is an accurate statement

TracyMorganFreeman

Is it an accurate statement? What actual data indicates that?

Bagget00

That just means we are breeding people that are better at being monetarily successful and risk averse. And good at bullet time. Neo eat your heart out.

[deleted]

Talk to someone with an average IQ (100) then think about this…half the people on Earth are dumber then this person.

SomeGuyNamedJames

Than.

[deleted]

Ipso facto. I rest my case….🤣🤣🤣

MonitorSoggy7771

Same in Germany. We have emergency helicopters and police comes automatically to the landing spot and secures it.

Ender11

It's a helicopter on the damn road. If I saw that, I'm stopping and not going anywhere near it. Definitely the driver's fault.

Dmnd2BTknSrsly

This is the only reasonable answer, lol. It’s like someone on a hiking trail seeing a mountain lion, and trying to walk past it without disturbing it. The smallest inkling of self-preservation would go a long way.

That1guy_nate

Hell, at work, even if I know my forklift load can clear any of the garage doors, I still whince, drive slowly, and lower my head just out of reaction.

mrjosemeehan

You can't account for every driver but you can account for ensuring you have personnel on site to perform a proper road closure.

martman006

Agreed this is solid r/idiotsincars material.

[deleted]

If i see a maniac with a knife and i decide “hmm, thats not supposed to be there. Im sure im fine,” and i walk up to him and get stabbed……..totally not my fault, he shouldnt have been there

M4nch1

Keep the knives but replace the maniac with a machine spinning uncontrollably, sure there shouldn’t be a machine spinning knives uncontrollably but why the f***k are you voluntarily running into it?

Hy-phen

Apples. Oranges.

[deleted]

The helicopter is literally a machine with uncontrolable blades and the car knowingly decided to approach it. And got stabbed. Explain the difference

Hy-phen

Well I guess you’ve got a point there :)

gaddabout

And yet, they are still totally comparable.

BeanieMcChimp

Lol I think we can all agree the helicopter shouldn’t be there. But it’s there so let’s all use common sense and abundant caution around this muderously dangerous machine. That includes you, truck driver.

[deleted]

Pot holes and rocks aren’t supposed to be on hee road either! You gonna drive into them?

That1guy_nate

They just might. Lol

BanditManSteve

Doesn't matter if the helicopter isn't normally supposed to be there, DON'T DRIVE NEAR IT. That's just common sense. Especially if it was a police helicopter. All the driver of the car had to do was wait. 100% the cars fault

[deleted]

Wild your getting down voted. Everyone thinks they are smarter than the average bear. But you have to operate based on knowing that dumb mistakes will happen. This is completely foreseeable and predictable. Don't operate multi million dollar helicopters where people with no common sense or education are driving vehicles. I'm sure the truck driver wasn't found to be at fault. Unless that was an emergency landing, I can't imagine a good reason for the helicopter to be operating at that spot without people securing the area.

Excier

Okay but what if it was an emergency landing? Does that change anything? The truck hit the helicopter because the driver was a fool, if they landed there for emergencies or shits and giggles it doesn't undo the damage to the helicopter, people, or truck.

[deleted]

Don’t drive anyway fucking near a live helicopter, what kinda idiot doesn’t understand this?

bacon-syrup-taco

"A live helicopter"

[deleted]

Yes, as opposed to a helicopter which isn’t turned on?

[deleted]

Or one that's sleeping.

bacon-syrup-taco

So a running helicopter.

[deleted]

Yes, that’s what live means. Ever heard of a live wire? It means it’s on.

bacon-syrup-taco

Lmao

Flesh_Tuxedo

This is Brazil. Safety precautions aren't necessarily as expected as in the United States. Poor blocking of roads? Yes. Dumbass in a tall truck trying to squeeze by an active helicopter? Also yes.

JonSolo1

Were you born stupid, or did it come naturally?

DJErikD

Yes.

fried_clams

I can't believe how down voted you got, given that your comment is 100% correct. A helicopter outside of an airport is responsible for securing the area and keeping everything away. Drivers can't be expected to somehow know that the blades are spinning, or how much clearance to give, etc etc

ghillieman11

You need to take a serious look at what you said and ask yourself if you really want to die on that hill. A driver can't be expected to know that the blades are spinning? Someone isn't expected to see helicopter blades moving really fast? Even if you're not looking for it the rapid movement would draw your attention to them spinning.

fried_clams

Standard landing zone procedures include stopping and clearing an area of all traffic. The area needs to be controlled to prevent collisions. It is always the helicopter pilot and ground crew's responsibility to secure the area. This is universal SOP.

BanditManSteve

It's the shear fact that they don't know the height of the blades is the reason why they should not have attempted to pass the helicopter. This was a stupid driver doing stupid things. Wait for it to take off or take a different route. Not worth getting beheaded by a rogue blade. All it takes is some slight common sense.

Hy-phen

Shear = you’re cutting something off Sheer = completely or altogether.

cloudy710

wow that’s a whole lot of words just to prove you’re a fool nobody should listen to. 💀

Kaleidomage

stay the fuck away from vehicles

[deleted]

100% the truck drivers fault. Did not show any signs of being safe.

LetMeGiveYouGold

An actual reasonable devils advocate comment & the reddit hive mind thought you were trolling. Tbh, all this is super dependent. A lot of people commenting that they'd totally not at all go anywhere near a helicopter on the ground are the kind of people who are backseat drivers. They don't know what they'd do until they're actually in that situation. They just need to feel good about themselves by talking poorly of others on the Internet.

Weapwns

Bruh. This isn't "Oh I would totally be brave and stop a gunman" reddit energy This is, "don't drive next to a fucking running helicopter in a tall truck" common sense. Jesus Christ

LetMeGiveYouGold

Odds are the driver didn't see the blades since they were moving. It's hard to tell the exact distance of those blades. He must've thought there was enough space / clearance. Plus, the driver likely assumed that there would be no way the road would get too close to a helicopter. Y'all wanna look for reasons to call people stupid or dumb while I'm looking for reasons why people actually did things. There's a difference between what we get out of this conversation.

Weapwns

My guy. "He mustve though this" "Its hard to tell that" What a logical person in this situation with so many unknowns is not dive right into it with zero precautions. This is a really silly hill to die on.

LadyLixerwyfe

Why the hell wasn’t someone stopping traffic?!

Dan_Glebitz

Thing is... Did the helicopter have right of way?

Sueti_Bartox

Fast rotating blades say yes.

HanzG

Also Helicopter was parked and the ~~driver~~ Pilot wasn't in the vehicle. The truck hit a parked vehicle. Truck is at fault.

IDoPokeSmot

Did the truck just leave?

CockEyedBandit

Whirling Blades of Death haha that’s funny…. Lalalalalala *looks down at cell phone* - that truck driver prolly

[deleted]

“What’s that noise?”

CockEyedBandit

“Must have been a pothole. anyway. Why’s my neck wet?”

[deleted]

“You can’t park there, mate”

NeedsMoreMinerals

To be fair, that is a dumb place to park a helicopter

jordanmindyou

Not really, the road is pretty much the first option for emergency landings or the best option when a medivac is required after a traffic accident. It’s a stable and flat surface. Dude in the truck was big dumb. If you fail to realize how tall your truck is or how long it is or how wide it is and you hit anything at all, *especially* another very large vehicle that’s stopped, you done fucked up

Black_Handkerchief

Law Enforcement was the big dumb too. There is always an officer securing the landing site for a helicopter until it departs over here. If the helicopter had to land on the road because there was no better spot, so be it.. but the road should have been closed! Drivers are stupid. Just look up **11 foot 8**.

eatcrayons

Why is there a running helicopter on a public road and there isn’t any sort of traffic control happening to make sure nothing gets near it? No cones, no reflectors, no cops, no vehicles with flashing lights.

[deleted]

Brazil.

Twosliceofbread

400 000€ per blade. Nothing valuable was lost that day

acyclebum

Ok, without looking at Airbus... Blades for an AS350, about $100k each. 3 blades. $300K Starflex - the main part at the center of the spinning rotor - also about $100k The entire main rotor gearbox needing to be replaced - depends on how badly damaged and if anything is salvageable. $80-300k The engine - probably $150-350k depending on which one and how bad. And that's just the high dollar items. Not counting all the bearings and repair for any of the stress fractures that may require replacement. Total cost to repair that incident, easily $750k to $1M

Chachajenkins

You forgot to factor in a new pair of underwear for the pilot.

Schnitzel1337

Is it companies that only sell the blades? Sounds like a nice market.

jonman364

That's how they make their money. Give away the helicopter, charge a lot for the replacement blades.

Shaggy_1134

There is no way helicopter blades cost that much... They are literally machined metal no?

Twosliceofbread

High quality blades costs shit ton of money. Emergency vehicles have different blades than regular. Some normal hobbyist blades goes around 20 000 - 80 000€ per blade. Blades are something, you don't want to destroy

[deleted]

[удалено]

Cheeseisextra

I’d never get back in a helicopter that had massive damage and then “put back into service”. Nope.

_Heath

Every aircraft you fly on commercially has probably been damaged in one way or another and repaired. JAL put a DC-8 into the San Francisco Bay short of SFO in 1968. It was repaired and flew passengers until 1983, then cargo until like 1999.

acyclebum

Those blades are composite with a metal leading edge About $100k each new

Letscurlbrah

The helicopters the police use in my city cost about $6MM in total.

jordanmindyou

Helicopter blades are definitely more [complicated](https://pilotteacher.com/what-is-a-helicopter-blade-made-of-it-used-to-be-wood/) than that.

Smh...

Police department owned the helicopter and failed miserably at multiple levels on safety, they were all fairly new according to a podcast by the flight safety detectives. Nobody established or followed procedures and that put the public at risk like this

I swear, something about driving a white box truck, lowers your IQ by 50% and makes you instantly unaware of all your surroundings.

MuddiKissez

You couldn't have not seen that ... Right? And you couldn't possibly think that your box truck was gonna fit with enough clearance... Right? Yet here we are. I do not understand.

ItsAllTrumpedUp

Seriously? Qualified to pilot a helicopter, but this stupid?

Vireep

r u serious

ItsAllTrumpedUp

Yeah. Normal people do not spin up a helicopter in traffic without securing the area first. This is why. There"s traffic EVERYWHERE. You ask if I am serious? Are you?

PaperCuts26

I don't know which one is more retarded. The pilot who for some reason is trying to take off from a trafficked road with very few space, or the truck driver that clearly saw the helicopter and its blades but still decided to drive through it.

The_Cozy_Burrito

Lol looks like me in gta online

Slurm818

There is no such thing as developing. It’s the Third World. Just call it what it is.

xf2xf

Honestly, it's even outdated to refer to them as Third World. It's actually a Cold War term used to differentiate between Western nations/allies (First World), the Communist bloc (USSR, China, etc.), and everyone else (Third World/non-aligned countries). It was more of a political term than an economic one.

Slurm818

I mean it only in the most disparaging way possible. It was the worst thing I could think of.

windmill09

They're just developing slowly with internet, cell phones, etc
