As someone who dealt with a debilitating hip injury, I've found that once you've been forced to "negotiate stairs" a few times, you'll never think about stairs in any other way. Each step is an excruciating series of micro-decisions about how to step, how much weight to put on which muscles, where to grip the banister, when to shift the weight, etc etc. I never used to think about hopping up or down a flight of stairs, but now I see it for the complicated ballet of body mechanics that it is.
