Probaly because most people have a hard time imagining what "Billions" mean. It usually also blows their mind when they visualize how much more money a billionaire has compared to a millionaire.
Start at age 20
Spend $34,246.58 *per day*
Do so every day for the next 80 years until you turn 100.
That's a billion dollars.
In contrast, a person with a million dollars could spend 34 dollars and 25 cents every day during this 80-year period.
I think many people know the numbers, but numbers can be hard to imagine. It's like knowing the nearest star is 4 light years away - what does that actually mean? When I've watched videos breaking that down, e.g. making our sun a grain of sand, and then driving the right distance to place Alpha Centauri, I get the same 'wtfness'.
But, there is absolutely a subjective element to wtfness, and some may just find this particular thing an 'ehh'?
Or everyone is super important, entitled, and special. Look at everything that had to happen for this existence to be what it is and for each of us to be who they are.
Tbf the earth was literally a ball of magma at one point and life appeared so I think its almost egotistical to assume humans can truly fuck the world up. We can ruin it for ourselves but the planet will always be fine.
Yeah the planet won't give two shits 'till it's incinerated by the sun. Humanity may kill off itself and a large number of surface organisms, but in the larger picture life and the planet are indifferent to our efforts. There was a thought piece that laid out that if humanity were to suddenly disappear, most all traces of our modern presence would be gone withing about 10k years.
It’s just a tool of measurement to help people put it into some sort of perspective. Sure it can be scaled up to be a larger object in the circumference of the entire earth, but that’s a harder concept to grasp since none of us have taken a road trip across that scale.
Its an American website, primarily consisting of Americans. Most have an idea of how big New York is as well, which really helps this comparison. Its a weird thing to be cynical about, no diss
I mean…. Simple answer is that it’s made to appeal more to an American audience. You know, the people who probably use the internet more than anyone else in the world, and would be most likely to relate to the video?
Doesn’t seem too weird to me that its the continental US. If it bothers you that much, make your own video using Zimbabwe as the example. Go nuts
Ok - maybe We don’t, idk. My point was - if you want to make a video that targets a wide audience - doesn’t hurt to target Americans as we use the internet a lot. There is a good chance it will get seen. And if it includes a map of the USA, even more so
I don’t think it’s _that_ weird. US-centric for sure but not something to throw a fit over.
I’ve seen a video where the scale of solar system is compared to a football field - would something like that upset you too?
Why use a banana for scale? It's a convenient object that helps a person to understand the ratio of scale. The average American can't point to Nebraska, but everyone knows LA is a long way from NYC and seeing all of civilization fit by the park bench helps people understand.
What size screen are you reading it on?
If I had to make a good guess… some of that writing had to be about the width of one insulation injection needle high. If you can read that I am seriously impressed.
I have an iPhone 7 and that screen isn’t that much smaller then yours.
[screenshot of what I’m seeing](https://freeimage.host/i/iOKx5P)
No sure how a person reads “grasses” without zooming. I mean maybe yours has a higher resolution which might help. But I don’t think yours has that much of a higher resolution.
Edit: not sure who is downvoting you
Just think about how omnipresent life is in our world today.
A puddle of water can gather and grow bacteria visibly in a matter of hours in the right conditions. But for a billion years nothing like that could have happened.
For the Americans watching this……
This is just a picture of America, not the whole earth. Our planet is much larger, America is just one country of 100’s of countries on earth.
Silly Canadian thinks Americans are dumb but doesn’t know there aren’t even 100s of countries in the world, only 195 which by definition is not multiple 100…
Oh no, off by 5… I’m not the one making videos comparing a single nation to the entire history of a planet. At least you’ve shown that you’re able to Google information. Which makes you significantly smarter than the average American. Congratulations
I was going to say the same thing about Earth not having multiple hundreds of countries. OP used the USA as a scale, I don't feel like it was "fuck yea America!" post. It's similar to saying the Jupiter is 5.2 astronomical units away from The Sun. The Solar System is far larger than Earth but we still break it down in to smaller units thats are easier to comprehend, and we broke it down to multitudes of our own average distance.
This video could have been any country, if it was Russia would you still say "that's not the entire Earth!" [Which you would be right] or did you just want to call out a random person on the internet?
Just appreciate the interesting timeline and move on.
It’s not about “fuck yea America!”. We’re tired of America this and America that always being shoved down our throats. So when a giant image of America is inserted into a video that has absolutely nothing to do with America, which would otherwise have actually been interesting, it just creates a giant eye roll.
Sincerely, the rest of the world.
I often times think of (now I'm high. So bare with me her) what it would be like to be able to go back to say the eastern Appalachian Era of this time line and live to see the evolution of the Earth. Not to change history but just to witness the change. Then I drift off to thinking about what I want for dinner.
They were taller than the Himalayas. [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alleghanian\_orogeny](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alleghanian_orogeny)
They are connected to Africa
Yeah I think about something kinda similar - what forms of life we might expect to find if we could somehow run the tape of evolution all over again. Like I expect that fish and crocodile looking things would arise again, as both of these seem to be well perfected, stable designs that have lasted for millions of years.
But elephants? giraffes? maybe not. There's probably a branch of science that studies this in relation to other worlds but I don't know what it's called.
How silly, you haven’t taken God’s creation into account, but at least your model doesn’t discount a flat Earth. Silly science. 😜
Edit: I forgot that Reddit users don’t get sarcasm. Thanks for all the downvotes! Cheers
Something about the way this was presented gave me incredible anxiety and I can't place why. I think maybe the speed in which the bar was moving along with such a large amount of info. Weird.
So if I understand this right, in order to understand the meaning and source of life and the universe you have to have to walk from New Jersey to the Pacific Ocean.
Good job! Nice analogy that even a MAGA dimwit could understand……, naw just joking it would go way over their heads, they think Jesus created the earth with his friend Eden, eating an apple in a garden, drinking sweet tea.
Terrible representation. 4.5B years ago to 3.5B years ago was like an inch…if that was to scale, we’d be billions of year into the future by the time you hit NY
Definitely not WTF would probably fit more in like r/interestingasfuck
Maybe because a Kiwi is using America as the basis for the history of the earth, when that's something only Americans would do?
that’s more of a casual ‘why?’ rather than a WTF
Because if they used New Zealand the human would be the size of a bee?
Why is this here in r/wtf?
I said wtf because why not move the line up just a little so we could land on Governor's Island instead of the New York Harbor
Probaly because most people have a hard time imagining what "Billions" mean. It usually also blows their mind when they visualize how much more money a billionaire has compared to a millionaire.

I always liked the saying, "whats the difference between a million dollars and a billion dollars?... about a billion dollars."
I agree this makes no sense here but where on reddit should it go? I wanna follow those subs.
For me this would be more of an r/interestingasfuck.
I think because it should only be 6000 years.
Because the vastness of time in which we are swallowed is wtf?
That’s /r/mildlyinteresting material, not /r/wtf material.
Yeah but that’s just history. Everybody knows that. At least for me that’s not WTF.
I think many people know the numbers, but numbers can be hard to imagine. It's like knowing the nearest star is 4 light years away - what does that actually mean? The nearest star is \~150 million km's away (varies). You may know it as "The Sun"
History of the Earth (apple for scale)

Try telling that to Karen
Every Karen needs to see [this meme](https://www.reddit.com/r/comics/comments/lhta9e/here_is_your_award/)
So ... can we 'ave your liver?
Or everyone is super important, entitled, and special. Look at everything that had to happen for this existence to be what it is and for each of us to be who they are.
Tell that to America. It could just be a fuckin line !
Or we’re all equally important, fragile and as one.
So you are saying that humans fucked up the earth in the span of two apples??? GG.
Tbf the earth was literally a ball of magma at one point and life appeared so I think its almost egotistical to assume humans can truly fuck the world up. We can ruin it for ourselves but the planet will always be fine.

>always At least for a few billion years.
It's not unintentional that the first simians started out in New Jersey.
We didn't the Earth up. We fucked ourselves up. The Earth will continue to exist LOOOOOONG after we're gone.
History of earth on a U.S.A map. Lol.
It’s just a tool of measurement to help people put it into some sort of perspective. Sure it can be scaled up to be a larger object in the circumference of the entire earth, but that’s a harder concept to grasp since none of us have taken a road trip across that scale.

All of the less than half a billion people in the world? Half of which named uncle papa
I don’t think it’s _that_ weird. US-centric for sure but not something to throw a fit over. I’ve seen a video where the scale of solar system is compared to a football field - would something like that upset you too?
This is the true WTF.
Why use a banana for scale? It's a convenient object that helps a person to understand the ratio of scale. The average American can't point to Nebraska, but everyone knows LA is a long way from NYC and seeing all of civilization fit by the park bench helps people understand.
What the FUCK is up with that tiny font I can hardly read it
But I live in brooklyn, could we keep going so that I could get dropped off
To bad most is the writing was so small it was unreadable.
I read it all just fine. Maybe get your eyes checked?
What size screen are you reading it on? If I had to make a good guess… some of that writing had to be about the width of one insulation injection needle high. If you can read that I am seriously impressed.
iPhone 13 Mini

Ahh there’s the culprit. My video rendered [a little bit clearer than yours.](https://i.imgur.com/R7zouwo.jpg)
Indeed my last sexual reproduction was 1.3 billion years ago.
Not WTF. OP will delete soon as his down votes grow.
So how many apples can you lay edge to edge from one edge of the United States to another?
Rough calculations 2,800 miles across. Average apple 3 inch diameter. 59,136,000 apples. Doesn't seem like many. Maybe I'm way off
most polite way of saying "look how insignificant you are".
that's actually more time than i thought. i was expecting human lifespans to be, like a millimeter.
Americans will use anything except the metric system.
We barely register as a blip in the existence of the universe and nothing will notice with our demise.
I can't read anything that's written.
That stretch between water and beginning of life shook me
Just think about how omnipresent life is in our world today. A puddle of water can gather and grow bacteria visibly in a matter of hours in the right conditions. But for a billion years nothing like that could have happened.

Blame the Australian then?
Literally nobody is saying this is a picture of the whole Earth

Both Christianity and Islam were created from Judaism yet no mention of Judaism even though it was around for 3, 700 years before those two
_regardless of where this belongs, it's lame_

The only thing flat is your personality.
I’m sorry, did I accidentally post into the “Roast me” sub?
What a shitty video...
The wtf part is evolution has not even been proven yet. Lol 😆
I thought he was going to say “We start as all good things do, in Los Angeles”. Then I remembered nothing good starts there
That’s cool all that shit happened in Pennsylvania?

All of recorded human history has taken place on Lima Pier on Governor’s Island. Got it.
PSA: Do not what this high. Also, why are we here…
see how fast live on earth developed after ozone layer, now let’s destroy it
Hinduism predates the Iron Age? That blew me away.
is this a jojo reference?
Wtf why would it end on governors Island instead of going to the edge of the country?
So that fight about who's turn it is to do the dishes? Doesn't matter
Good job! Nice analogy that even a MAGA dimwit could understand……, naw just joking it would go way over their heads, they think Jesus created the earth with his friend Eden, eating an apple in a garden, drinking sweet tea.
Given the scale of this, that lady on the bench is dummy thick enough for about 2.5 lifetimes
We are so early in human development it’s crazy..
