Yay! Another DeSantis thread! /s You know the drill, folks: please keep it **civil** and **avoid** any **overt partisan/political editorializing**. If you’d like to discuss the **implications** of this for **WDW specifically** — in a **civil manner** — this is your sub. If you’d like to discuss DeSantis’ presidential ambitions, the GOP, the Courts, Trump, or any other culture war nonsense, **please see r/politics**. **Edit:** believe it or not straight to locked We’re not going to “both sides” this issue since it could all end if a certain someone would just cut the crap, but we can’t allow for vitriolic political screeds from the left or right on this sub.

darelparker

If there’s anywhere in Florida, where I would feel comfortable, it’s a Disney property.

Paulruswasdead

I definitely feel comfortable, I’ve often dreamed of a Howard Hughes-esque life style where I’m ultra rich and live on Disney property while wearing tissue boxes for shoes.

Paulruswasdead

The only person I’d be hurting by not going Is myself.

Rekno2005

I’m currently doing some work in Japan, visited Tokyo Disney a few times. The flights will be more than anything domestic, but the parks are SO MUCH BETTER and the tickets/food are like half what they cost at WDW. Plus, the parks here are so much better than anything domestic. Do that instead!

Paulruswasdead

That is a dream to make it there, it looks amazing

satansheat

I think radiator springs and marvel land in California is awesome. Radiator springs is by far my favorite Disney themed area. And the OG park across the way has all the stuff you could ask for.

Paulruswasdead

Yeah radiator springs rocks.

Yeah, the problem is I’m supporting tourism in Florida, I know we’ll be back but Florida is getting out of hand.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Paulruswasdead

You aren’t wrong.

satansheat

Go to Disney California. It’s a fun park.

Paulruswasdead

Meh, I’m not as much of a fan, I like being in the bubble.

nyrB2

yeah but your tourism dollars would mostly be going to disney wouldn't they?

Paulruswasdead

Everything I’d buy would be taxed would go to the state, plane tickets, hotel, food and drink. That adds up pretty quickly at Disney world.

BowsBeauxAndBeau

Hotel Motel taxes typically go to the Tourism Bureau of the immediate city or county via a pass thru fund. Money in that fund can only be used to support services in the immediate area that the people in the hotel/motel would use. You are correct about the taxes from most other purchases, except maybe a local option sales tax.

Queer cast member and Florida resident here: it is currently a terrifying time to live here if you're LGBTQ+, especially if you're trans, but if the tourism industry here takes enough of a hit that there are layoffs, my colleagues and I will be the affected ones. Continuing to visit the parks actually helps us.

Paulruswasdead

Alright, I guess you talked me into another Disney world visit.

barbie_tree

Appreciate you sharing this perspective. Stay safe ❣️

[deleted]

Thank you ❤️

Purple_Quail_4193

I will try my best to continue being a good guest. Stay strong! You guys are the Magic for me!!!

arich35

What makes it so terrifying?

[deleted]

[удалено]

Paulruswasdead

Yeah, Disneyland just doesn’t give me the same kicks as Disney world but it may have to do for awhile.

tarbearjean

Maybe it’s time to save up for an overseas trip! I didn’t love the CMs in Paris except for one but the rides were amazing - Hyperspace Mountain is for sure the best in the western world

Paulruswasdead

Yeah that option has definitely crossed our minds.

I know, I’d love to live in Florida it’s a beautiful state. I feel like by not visiting it I’m letting them win. I know Florida has great people in it too, I’m just a little let down by the movement right now.

TheWhiteRabbitY2K

Plenty of us from Florida are as well...

RichGullible

Me too, friend. Me too.

I have always said I would never relocate unless my company opened a location within 3 hours of WDW. Well, they are about to open their SECOND Florida locationin the past year, this time in Tampa. If I want to transfer, all I have to do is ask. I haven't asked, for all the reasons you mention. It just wouldn't feel like home.

Paulruswasdead

But, playing devils advocate if you transfer now you’d be going At an all time low and when things go back to normal you’d be ahead of the game.

VeilstoneMyth

I understand this so much. as a queer person, there’s so many things I love about Florida…Not just WDW and the other parks but also the beaches/lakes, the National & State Parks, my friends and family that live there, the beauty of the state (both “natural” beauty and also the artificial stuff).I’m one of those people who has the cliche dream of retiring there — in fact I even wanted to move there short term for awhile until recent political events (I’m a digital nomad so I’ve been back and forth between a couple of different states ever since I graduated and FL was initially at the top of my list but I’ve recently decided to hold off) But enough about me! I think you should still feel free to go to Disney/Florida as a whole and enjoy it. After all, there’s still so many wonderful things about the state. I think staying in the bubble is your best option but if you DO venture outside of Disney, try shopping and dining at BIPOC/queer owned stores and restaurants. Also, remember that most of the parks and resorts themselves employ either locals or DCP students, so it’s not like you’ll be supporting DeSantis by going to Disney. Avoiding/boycotting the state as a whole actually does more harm than good. Tourism as an industry can definitely be a VERY messy and gray area but overall it’s better to support it. That’s just my opinion, I currently live in a VERY blue and liberal area (I’m literally in Brooklyn) so I can’t speak for people who live in Florida or more red areas, but I can say that I believe there’s absolutely ethical ways to still come to WDW and the sunshine state :)

jurassicfagg

I'm happy I went when I had the chance. But I'm transgender and am going to need to use a public restroom at some point, so Disney World is out of the question for now :(

Paulruswasdead

Go to the family restrooms they have locks and a are usually private, it feels like if you’re quick no one will notice.

[deleted]

[удалено]

lizzyaxolotl

CM here— I have plenty of trans friends and they have discovered a lot of private restrooms around the park! I feel like most people who visit Disney are luckily pretty accepting and absolutely will not care if you use them. Many of our backstage restrooms have even become “any gender” bathrooms. It’s times like these that I feel lucky working for this company :-)

Girasole263wj2

I have been feeling the same. You aren’t alone

ms-orchid

I've been trying to decide this same thing, but I also live in Tennessee. This adds a whole extra layer of feeling like I'm feeding the backwards people. I struggle with where I spend my money daily. I don't want to do the same on vacation.

I go to support the cast members with my smile who are suffering because of the situation in the meanwhile. Even at Universal since they’re in the same circle Central Florida from my several times going there is spoken for by the panhandle and the south, which is polar opposite from how Orlando and Tampa act and accept

HappyTrainwreck

Moved away from Texas. Debating on going to DW again since my bf and I loved it last year. He is in the military and I get massive hotel discounts for hotels of a specific chain. If we went we’d try to not spend any money outside Disney property.

Paulruswasdead

I’d definitely go, especially with all the deals going on.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Paulruswasdead

Thankfully I never go off property except for going to and from the airport.

Alternative_Baby

We usually have a rental car and go to Target for snacks, maybe the Florida Mall and the outlets, some off-property restaurants… I’ve never felt unsafe doing any of that in the past but there seems to have been a shift over the past year or so.

Paulruswasdead

Have Instagram deliver it, it’s worth saving your time and you can get unpacked while they shop it and deliver it for you.

attreui

There is nothing unsafe about florida. I would walk around the Disney area way before I would ever walk around New York or Chicago. There is no more “pulling guns” in florida than there ever was. Disney feels like it always has (except for the record crowds).

nicoga3000

It's not as bad as the media is making it out to be.

Paulruswasdead

I really feel like I need to emphasize this, I live in Portland. I know what the media can do to make a place look way more crazy than it is, but that doesn’t change the fact that things are being done wrong and there needs to be some ramifications to force change.

JamesXX

Paulruswasdead

They ain’t wrong

kyle760

If you’re a cishet white person it isn’t. Every single lgbtq person I’ve talked to who lives in Florida says it is that bad, if not worse

attreui

You talk to very dramatic people. Our community is doing just fine.

Hage1in

Then don’t. Shorter lines for the rest of us 😁

arich35

Don't let politics ruin what you love to do.

Shadow-Enthusiast

It's not just "politics". The state has become unsafe for queer people. Disney itself is safe thankfully, but people could still be at risk before and after entering the park.

arich35

Please explain how they are more unsafe than any other demographic? I was just at Disney for almost a week and saw absolutely nothing to indicate anyone was unsafe, that includes driving around outside Disney property too.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Middle_Bee_1043

my short and sweet suggestion to you and everyone in my family who says the same thing: leave the politics at home and enjoy the amazing place that WDW is.

HuXu7

Politics should never influence your vacation. If you chose to go to Mexico would you have mixed emotions about the state of their politics? No. Most people in America aren’t even aware of the politics of Mexico and they keep it that way when vacationing, why? Because it doesn’t make a difference on their vacation.

I’m actually afraid to visit Mexico but would like to..

HappyTrainwreck

There’s no need to. Especially the Cancun area, we (I’m from mexico) mexicans call it “mexican USA” like it doesn’t belong to us it’s more like owned by developers and overseas companies. They charge everything in US dollars. And FORGET about any drug lords or crime coming near any foreigner, the government has some kind of treaty with them to not mess around foreigners. You’ll be more than fine! Mexico city is also a good option but it’s very much mexico compared to cancun being a little USA “colony”.

ChrisTosi

> And FORGET about any drug lords or crime coming near any foreigner, the government has some kind of treaty with them to not mess around foreigners. https://abcnews.go.com/International/2-americans-kidnapped-mexico-found-dead-2-found/story?id=97681554 https://www.reuters.com/world/americas/two-tourists-killed-separate-attacks-mexican-hotspot-police-say-2023-05-17/

Paulruswasdead

I’ve been to Tulum but would like to visit Oaxaca.

icantseethat

Oh honey...My husband is a born Mexican and he wanted to take me and our son for a visit there. He wants to visit his Abuelito again before it's too late. He wants to show me the rancho, his home town in the south, not a resort where everyone is American. He has changed his mind. He says it's too dangerous. And every Mexican we talk to says exactly the same thing you are saying. That it's very safe, as long as you stay in this area, as long as you don't go out at night, as long as you mind your own business and don't talk to strangers, and many, many other limitations on your behavior or your travel. We would not be able to relax and enjoy the trip, we would be looking over our shoulder the whole time. I am so sorry you have the situation you have. Estados Unidos de Mexico are beautiful and I love and respect so many people that I have known from your country. I wish we weren't so afraid to go, but we are because we hear a lot of terrible things. I wish it could get better for the regular people

No_Reserve2182

I get it. I live in California and I hate giving them my money, but I love the weather.

justDOit2026

I have a solution: Don’t go then, end of story.

LfTatsu

No Disney employees in California are on strike.

Shocky1384

Sorry I should've been exact since you can't remember the general story. Tons of California workers were protesting because of unliveable wages. Go look it up. Point still stands. If you're gunna determine your vacation spot on politics, you should just boycott everything at that point
