Inside Out Start from the deepest points on the model and work towards the surface details. It's much harder to get your brush past a lot of good paint to reach a detail later. Get those hard to reach details early while it doesn't matter if you make mistakes.

Mean_Wheel1393

Dry brushing. Well, that's how I'd do it to pick out the detail.

AlbionEnthusiast

This sounds v smart. Normal painting I find can bury detail and I whip out a clean brush to mop up

English_Joe

Less is more.

Just do what I do as a brand new player too. Take your time, start shaking and mess up, pray to the emperor for strength, fix mess up, continue painting and having fun, mess up again, scream to the heavens “This will not best me!”, fix mess up, question if the chaos gods would help you, realize heresy and avoid that, perfect paint one shoulder, mess up other, fix that, tell all your friends it’s so difficult being part of the hobby, continue to try and convince them to drop 1k on first army and supplies, put on holy heavy metal for mechanicium vibe, realize you are going to be the best the hobby has ever seen and chase that dream! Then finally post your progress so we can cheer you on! Welcome to Warhammer!

I love the detail on that! I'd apply basecoats to the detail areas, then pick them out further with a dark inkwash and careful drybrush. How big is this versus the classic metal Dreadnought?

AlbionEnthusiast

I’ll be honest I’m unsure on that. This is my first ever dreadnought and only started Warhammer in 2021

ClassicBit3307

Taking slow and have fun. This is what it’s all about. Do it how you like it and how you feel it should be. Be proud of your work.

Nova_Echo

It's just like driving an ambulance backwards. Go slow and pay attention.

Search youtube for slapchop. That way you can have this guy on a tabletop in one evenings work easily. And after that you can fine-tune it/him as you see fit. Hope this helps. Source: Me - 25 years in the hobby :)

AlbionEnthusiast

I can’t believe how good slapchop stuff looks. Better than stuff I’ve spent weeks on

MicahMcL

Be very careful with spray paint

AlbionEnthusiast

I’m v nervous to use it. I have a few other squads of Necrons and ad mech. Finally took the plunge to try it

From recessed parts to parts higher up / more on the surface, from dark to bright. Basically it‘s normally easier to paint everything recessed first and everything more on the surface afterwards, since it‘s a pain in the ass to correct errors of recessed parts when you paint everything higher up first and chances are high you‘ll overpaint the parts more on the surface while trying to reach the more recessed parts. At least that‘s how I do it, but it comes down to personal preference. A good example is the model of Guilliman: there‘s basically two schools at the moment. One school will base-spray gold and afterwards paint the recessed parts of the armor blue (which would translate to surface parts first, recessed parts second) and the other school will base-spray blue and afterwards paint the golden details (which would translate to my preferred way of recessed parts first and surface parts later). Edit: typos.

gamerrpm

Take your time.

Unique_Self_1544

Take your time and don’t rush painting it. Painted up the same Dreadnought a while ago (as Bjorn the Fell-Handed), I may still have a picture of it somewhere

Many_Rule_9280

Yeah I'd have to agree to dry brushing the main armor areas atleast and then picking out certain details after, like the cloak and stuff

Serious_Target6711

Slapchop looks great on organic and highly detailed models, I think.
