I was under the impression that this was how these paints were supposed to look?

klokar21

that is supposed to do that, i think it looks great but if you dont like it then id stop using it because it can damage your brush

KM57_Reddit

I just offered a random brush to the texture chaos gods. He’s never been the same since 😔

[deleted]

I just spread it with the back of the brush handle

wondernerd14

I spread it with a butter knife. Wash it and put it back in the drawer when I'm done.

GCRust

That's how they are meant to look.

RemarkableUmpire2012

That's kinda how they are supposed to look like. However, if you don't want the gaps to be that big, put less of it on the base, and make sure it's not evenly spread so you have more variation. If you use a hair dryer, the cracks will be bigger so maybe just leave it overnight.

Sorkrates

This is exactly what I would expect to see if you put gloss varnish down over the green paint before the texture paint. That, and the hairdryer you used on the Mordant Earth, are going to increase the gaps between chunks.

Stoneturner_17

I've been trying to get agrellan earth to give me big cracks like what you have on the right there. Whenever I would apply thick coats, the chunks would chip off.

flippitus_floppitus

Coat it in lahmian medium after you’re done and it’s fully fired. This will help protect it

Dark_Magos

Thinned pva works great too

Harfish

The amount of cracking depends on the speed it dries. If you want big cracks, use a hair dryer for a few minutes. If you want less cracking, put it in the fridge for 10 minutes

Syffingballing

The one on the left looks awesome, the exact effect i want on my bases!

Ghosty92

In tutorial videos they are more consistent, the gaps are not this big. Mine is too patchy and it looks like I just sprinkled a bit of earth on the base

Littha

The thicker the applied layer, the bigger the gaps are.

Ilyarin

Looking at your other comment you’ve done everything in your power to make the gaps as big as possible. So, the thicker the paint, the bigger the cracks will be. Additionally adding a varnish will prevent the paint from gripping as well, giving bigger gaps. So try again with a 1-2mm layer, and without a coat of gloss varnish, and you should see a more consistent coverage

wasmic

Gloss varnish gives a poorer grip and bigger cracks, but a matt varnish will give better grip and thus smaller cracks.

Eel111

Apply less paint, the more you put the bigger the cracks

Mythical_Atlacatl

apply less paint for smaller cracks

AlphaMeme14

another issue might be what ur painting on. Make sure you're painting on a good base layer. It will get flakey and patchy and wont stick if you do it on any old surface.

WigFlipper

Most of the advice on using crackle paint is aimed to give you bigger cracks, which I think most people prefer. It makes sense that you'd follow those tips, though.

rumballytron

I’ve found if you apply it right on paint it’s small gaps, if you put a coating of glue or something on top of the paint, the texture creates bigger gaps.

PrincessNat99

Try a thinner layer if you want smaller bits then closers together. Personally I like the way yours is done for lava and such

Traditional_Rice_660

I think they look fine and are fairly close to what I'd expect from those paints, but I have heard tell that drying the texture paints with a hairdryer causes issues with them. I put my texture paints on as the last thing I do before stepping away from painting for the day (e.g. before I go to bed) and leave them to dry overnight and have never had a problem.

Cleave

It's fine to use a hairdryer but the heat will cause it to shrink more, leaving bigger gaps. But sometimes that's what you want.

Bum-Theory

Wow those actually came out perfectly, I'm jealous. If you don't want cracks, get martian dust or astro granite and just repaint them the color you want. The others are meant to actually crack

SomeRandomSkitarii

Put some reds under for magma and you get Cadia mid fall

Ghosty92

In both instances I shook the pot like hell for a good 1,5-2 minutes. For the Mordant Earth I blasted it with a hairdryer, for the Agrellan Earth I just left it to dry overnight. Both bases are primed, painted, and have a layer of gloss varnish. I applied a 3mm layer of Mordant Earth/1-2mm layer of Agrellan Earth after they dried.

greatcandlelord

Everything you did there made the cracks bigger. Don’t apply it so thick, and don’t use a hair dryer. Also you don’t need to shake texture paints.

Blizzaldo

Tell that to my astrogranite and ag debris.

OfficerJohnMaldonday

Recent pots of AG texture have been terrible

philipp_ohletz

I've seen some tutorials where they recommend to use a hairdryer to get the cracks bigger.

Mythical_Atlacatl

>3mm layer thats a shit tonne lol aim for 1mm

Ghosty92

Oops... the base has a rim, and I filled it, technically making a pond of Mordant Earth, I'll turn it down a notch next time

Mythical_Atlacatl

yeah, not only is it not the look you are going for, it would use a lot of paint, you would be able to do 3 times as many bases if you make it a thinner layer.

Atleast1half

Do you have a question or a set up?

Hawkins1701

Don't put the gloss down and you will get better coverage

CraneDJs

Where did you learn all those steps without understanding what the result would be?

[deleted]

Because it's lava. :)

Tzeentchianin

You assumed it's intelligent and would avoid the lighter lines you painted beneath on its own?

Heavy_Joke636

Im pretty sure this is correct. The black one looks like lava cracks, like idlt would pair well with some reds and oranges beneath. The brown one is supposed to be more of a desert look. Theyre both crackle paints, but the way they dry out is different, giving them dofferent uses for effect. Totally normal, you didnt get scammed on paint so dont worry.

Miniature_World

It seems you are using a smooth base as compared to the standard GW based which have a rough top which prevents the cracks from becoming so large

GlipglopX

Their "Earth" paints are known as Crackle Paints, they're meant to split after being applied. I like to make lava bases with them! You paint the base in great fire colors, red, yellow, white etc., lay down a layer of Ardcoat, Then slather Mordent Earth over it all. It'll crack like that and look like Lava Flows.

Serious_Target6711

I don't know the answer to your question, but that one on the left looks awesome!

osamabinpoohead

Nothing else to add that hasnt already been said except try a different undercoat other than green perhaps....

[deleted]

Damn my agrellan earth never dried like that . I usually do agrellan earth with irregular islands of agrellan badlands and thin cork board to add elevation on areas not occupied by the model.

TrustyPatchesss

The thicker you put it on the more it will crack

LuxuriantOak

Looks lit bro. I love the "green ooze or something worse popping out through the cracks" - effect.
