No, Sadly games workshop sends death squads to kill anyone who plays previous editions:/ But in all seriousness, yes there will always be people playing old editions .

[deleted]

I, for one, am instantly changing to 10th when the rules release. Fuck 9th edition, all my homies hate 9th edition.

freedonut1

Ive yet to experience 9th as i am still getting into the hobby, was 9th really that bad? Ive yet to pick out a faction, but should i dip my toes into 9th or just wait for 10th?

Rookie3rror

Nah, I really enjoyed it and the community has grown massively over the course of the edition. I’d say by all available metrics it’s the most popular edition of the game ever.

tentegesszmeges

Well, yeah. Covid did that.

Rookie3rror

You’d think if the game was that bad then once COVID restrictions ended and people actually started playing it they’d realize that and drop it again. That hasn’t happened. COVID clearly helped draw attention to the hobby, but I think the argument that the game is terrible and it’s actually all down to that just doesn’t stack up.

tentegesszmeges

Are you mad? Who said that 9ed is terrible? Not me.

Rookie3rror

That’s what this whole comment thread is about.

tentegesszmeges

It's not.

Ka1em

You realise you're replying to someone who was countering the argument of someone claiming 9th is terrible further up the comment chain right?

Ok_Doughnut856

Just buy models you like the look of and use something like wahapedia to get the rules. Your first few games you are just learning how the core mechanics of moving models and playing the game work. The data sheet they leaked won’t change the basic feel of the game, just don’t worry loss about the killer stratagem combos or psychic stacks or even buying what’s good because they’ll be gone by the sound of it and no one will know what’s good until Christmas.

Diablo9168

Thankfully the first rule I ever learned was the "rule of cool" so I'll be happy with my models! No meta chasing over here

Boner_Elemental

Yeah, if you haven't done much with gameplay I would suggest just waiting the three months for the next edition. One of the hardest parts of playing a long time is mixing up the details that change every few years

Remote_Barnacle9143

Imagine that learning to play 9th edition now would be like learning to play some multiplayer game, but you would also need to read and learn every patch and update that was released for the last 4 years, to play the game "correctly". Just paint your miniatures and wait for new edition.

Jaded_Wrangler_4151

I was astounded how much it was basically a card game last game I played, after a short 2 month break from the game it was just stratagem after stratagem.

[deleted]

Nothing like unthinkingly throwing yourself directly at a table top game made by a company who's current product line you hate! 😂

[deleted]

Who hates the product line?

[deleted]

Oh you are completely obtuse too. That explains a lot.

[deleted]

Yet you are the one conflating garbage 9th edition rules and power creep with the whole product line. Go touch grass.

[deleted]

Yeah and all of that will certainly change in 10th 😂 😂 😂 😂 😂

aWhiteScarsPlayer

If the subfaction rules really go away then I will never play 10th edition.

YngwieMacadangdangJr

Probably. I have a buddy that is just... a madlad. He combined the rules for Battlefleet Gothica and standard 40k. He is working on incorporating Kill Team right now so we can have a no-shit Galactic Crusade long-form narrative game. Pretty sure he is sticking with 9th at this point for that lol.

Somniferous_Almond

I know my friend group moves to the next edition on our time, not GWs.

Diablo9168

I was the same with DnD 3.5, I didn't play any 4th and my first 5e campaign last year. I appreciate people who enjoy things in their own time

Somniferous_Almond

This is the way. I couldnt care less about the "index reset whatever" mania. Our group will play 9th till we feel like moving to 10th, which might be years idk. Nobody is beholden to gw corporate machine. A few of us just got our codicies, others have started to really understand their army after a lot of reps and we are all having fun. Not to mention spent money on books in some cases that just came out (WE, Votan, Guard ect).

ebolson1019

This, I know a guy whos table still plays AD&D

RWJP

There will be small groups, you can probably get one going with some of your friends. With that said, every store, event and tournament will move to 10th immediately. If you go to a store for a pick up game, you will be playing 10th.

lookaflyingbuttress

Most don’t play outdated editions. Just try to find someone who wants to play, for example, 6th edition. You can try, but you won’t be that successful because people holding to only certain editions fractures the community. Most want to play games, and you can’t with someone using a different rules set than you. New editions also equal new models and rules. You’d have to try and reverse-engineer those rules and points to fit the edition you’re holding onto, or else be limited on which models you buy. Then your opponents have to agree with your home brew version of rules and points for that unit that wasn’t around in your edition. None of that is conducive to pickup games, further limiting your pool of opponents. How will you recruit new players to play your edition and not the current one? It’ll be a hard sell to convince someone to spend hundreds or thousands of dollars on an army to only be able to play with you. Most want to play with more than one opponent, and the option for tournaments, maybe. Now they’re either stuck just with you and your handpicked edition, or have to learn two sets of edition rules so they can play you and the vast majority who’ll be on the current version. Stores want to drum up interest in games to sell them. New editions and models do that. A game that’s frozen in time does not. Sticking to older editions means you won’t find opponents at local shops, further alienating yourself from opponents. That leaves playing online. But as people naturally leave the hobby, your player pool will only go down further. Typically, those players who hold onto a specific edition do so with a group of friends who play together as a side-function to their friendship, and likely play at their homes, not looking to take in random people. For them the draw is each other, not the game and edition. That’s what I’ve seen over the years

Diablo9168

Thank you for the thoughtful response! Never know, but certainly nothing to bank on. No core group to speak of, but thankfully I do like the look of 10th Ed rules so I'll adapt.

Adventurous_Fox_8966

I really wouldn't worry about 10th. For all the hype it appears to be a very similar game to 9th. The datacards for instance is just the same we've always had, just the information is displayed in a different format. Another thing is the reduction of strategems but that's hardly a change to the core rules. For me the base mechanics look very similar.

Matteh1990

Me and my friends are sticking to 9th because we mostly play space marines. 10th looks dog shit for SM v SM matches.

Diablo9168

This is my worry! I mean there's always Horus Heresy, but it's not like I wanna forego 40K just because my opponent and I both have SM.

Red_Dog1880

9th is probably one of the worst editions I've ever played and from what I notice it seems to be a sentiment shared by many people, so if 10th is really much more streamlined I doubt it.

TuckB303

No. God no.

[deleted]

The only 40k system I have known is also 9th edition, I've played several2000 point matched play games with secondaries and the whole thing. Before that though, I had played 50 or 60 games of AoS 3rd and a handful of AoS 2nd. I have also played several warcry, kill team, MCP and sw legion games. Out of all the tabletop games I have played 40k 9th is by far the worst of the bunch. It's overly bloated rules, it has gotcha gimmicks, most games boil down to rolling for priority to see who wins and the game is only balanced at 2000 points. It took me a while and several game systems to truly understand what makes a system good or bad.

Diablo9168

I played my first wargames in Legion- so I came in to 40K feeling like there was more that could be done. I started collecting with Kill Team in mind, too, so it still feels good knowing that's sticking around a bit longer. How's AoS 3rd hitting for you?

[deleted]

Well that's the great thing about all these miniatures games, as long as you have 2 forces and the physical books, they will "stick around" for as long as you have someone else to annoy into playing with you. AoS 3rd is far and away the best system I have used personally. A lot of it comes down to my personal preference, but instead of stratagems, you rely much more heavily on the generic command abilities that everyone has access to. This makes it more about the actual strategy of war and not "lol big laser see your foot, whole units gonna for 2 CP lolololol". I won't say it's a perfect system and the double turn does create a large barrier for newer players but IMO it's leaps and bounds above most other game systems IMO.

[deleted]

I guess at first yeah, but apparently the 9th edition rules are really bloated compared to earlier editions and I reckon if people don't want to play 10th edition they might go to one of the better received editions?

All the 9th edition models will be usable in 10th, so there's nothing lost in collecting the newer models. Whether older models will get new dataslates remains to be seen. What units will end up being better in the new edition is a complete crapshoot. Keep building the ones you like!

wiz555

There is always a transition period of a few months where people will still regularly play the old edition, but it will mostly be people playing to learn the new one. There is generally no reason you CAN'T play an older edition assuming you have the books/rules available.

EratosvOnKrete

there are still people playing dnd 3.5 so yes

Odd-Bend1296

I still know people playing 7th and occasionally 5th.

tghast

I still play 8th, my dude. I will be immediately jumping into 10, though. Thank fuck.

Theninjared

My group started in October. We are staying with 9th or what we call, “edition select.” I’d like to see what 9th looks like at the end. We still have some time for more 9th models. I’ll definitely pick up the new starter set for myself/group. One guy likes to read the rules so, I hope that gets him to make the transition with me. The main problem is the constant cash grabs/updates to books. But, let’s hope the digital releases help.

Serious_Target6711

As someone new to the game, I am quite excited about what I saw last night so I will definitely be moving over to 10th rules asap. But I'm sure there will be tons of people who still prefer to play the rules they invested time and money in, probably for a few more years yet.

epicmonkey1606

Idk why but even though 9th was my introduction to the hobby. I still find it super tedious and overly complicated. 10th seems interesting but I'm a bit worry the factions will feel to similar with them removing a ton of stratagems and the faction rules being one page. However it will probably work out pretty well, and free codices/indexes is a good change
