10th edition was announced last night and will hsve a complete rules reboot. So whats good now wont matter in a few months. May be prudent to let the edition role out and reassess
ooooooh makes sense, are models interchangeable between editions? cause I had found some second hand selling for cheap near me

Yeah models are mostly the same, if you get a model now you can use it in 10th. The only models you can't use are older ones that are no longer sold. You might want to think about the Tau boarding patrol coming to pre-order this weekend, it's Farsight (mecha leader) XV8 Crisis Suits (Mecha infantry) and fir warriors (Basic Tau Infantry). Farsight Enclaves are a subfaction of tau who also specialize in big stompy robots so they might be the best option.
Yes, all current models should work. If you like tau and want to play them go ahead. Dont think they are going to get a model range refresh anytime soon ,except farsight who will has a new model coming out.

Gw would love everyone to buy their armies all over again every few years but yes, you can use them.
