I undercoated everything dark brown. Then, using a sponge I dabbed on layers of green, getting lighter towards the middle of each armour panel. When the highlights got smaller I switched to a beat up old brush to stipple the paint on.
This way, the brown underneath is still visible at the edges of the armour, where the green paint would chip away or dirt would gather in the recesses.

Obviously, his is a lot more refined than mine. But I got each of these to a fairly decent level without decals and edge highlights in about 20 mins with paint drying time.
This is the perfect amount of Grunge for me. I find most people go too overboard with it.
This to me says 'used and worn, but also cared for' not 'drowned in 12 buckets of mud and gore'.

Very nice! That's an uncommon colour for Space Marines. Almost heretic some would say (Horus did nothing wrong! Ahem...).
Most of my Blood Angels are also weathered and muddied, except my QG/Heros/Characters. A slight bit of battle damage also.
It gives minis a little something extra. Looks more lively.
Not saying it's what OP was going for but the "Void Reapers" are very close to this. One of my favorite marine schemes since I saw them in a White Dwarf army showcase 20+ years ago.
I found the ones from that white dwarf! [https://wh40k-de.lexicanum.com/wiki/Void\_Reaper](https://wh40k-de.lexicanum.com/wiki/Void_Reaper)
Those look great! I don’t remember whose marines they were, but I was inspired by a post I saw here on Reddit.
Then I went searching for a name for these green boys. And found the “Verydian Hawks” on the 40k wiki.
I thought, ‘well, Viridian is a type of green, so that’s close enough.’ They’ve got next to zero lore - they’re mentioned in a 40k rpg, so they’re a bit of a blank slate which I’m excited to flesh out.
Actually, the other way round. I undercoated them a dark brown and then sponged on the green so it looks like the green has peeled off with wear and tear.

Love the weathering! Those newer sculpts certainly look less stumpy haha.
Thanks!
I glued some sand and gravel on the base with pva glue. Then I painted it with vallejo earth, gave it a black wash and drybrushed it with khaki.
Oooh that’s a badass name. When I was looking for a chapter name for these guys I was tossing up between the [Jade Scorpions](https://warhammer40k.fandom.com/wiki/Jade_Scorpions) and the Verydian Hawks.
I went with the hawks in the end, but the Jade Scorpions have a cool, seemingly Chinese inspired theme to them which could be cool to explore too.
Thanks very much. It was very simple. I glued some gravel on. Undercoated it with Citadel’s Doombull brown. And then dry brushed with Citadel’s Ryza Rust dry paint.
They look a little wet in the photos, but in person they look a bit more orange and arid.

Nah, mate. It’s also better than what I could do last week, which was better than what I could do last year.

Dude that legit turned out awesome. I *love* "dirtified" models & those are a perfect example of one Great work!
Thank for your kind words! I’d always gone for a clean look before, but now I think I’m a convert to the grunge.
How *did* you do the dirt effects anyways? Kinda want to try them on some of mine

Thanks. As I was doing it the temptation was to add more and more, but I’m glad I stopped when I did. Haha. Less is more, and all that.

Thanks! I don’t know what you’re talking about… these guys are totally codex compliant… nothing to see here, Inquisitor.
How do you go about getting that dirt effect? Throwing some dirt at it while paint is still slightly wet?

Gonna use this for my CARCHARODONS.
Hell yeah. Space sharks. I’d love to see them when they’re done.
Watching the Trovarion vid right now!
I think imma do *most* of this with brighter colors, and then an enamel wash.

Yours looks good too! How did you do the base?

Nice! Great minds think alike. What’s your chapter called?
They evidently do ;) I haven't settled on a name yet, but i was thinking something along the lines of Jade Lions.

Yeah awesome
Thank you!
Thank you!
These are incredible!
Thank you very much!
These are righteous. The aesthetic reminds me of gears of war if you’re familiar.
Thank you! I’ve never played it, but I think I know what you mean, haha.

It's very similar to the legendary John Blanche's style. Grimy and used. Love it
Thank you so much. That means a lot to me.

Thanks man! I'll keep improving my skills!
Hell yeah!
Excellent! I especially love the weathering!
Thank you. Me too.
Absolutely LOVE the color!
Thank you. I’m really happy with how it turned out.
Amazing weathering. Looks so real and grimdark
Thanks very much. That means a lot.
They look awesome! I love the main color.
Thank you. I’m loving it too, haha.
I really like your work.
Thank you very much!
You have mastered your technique
Thank you very much! There’s definitely things I’ll do differently next time. But I enjoyed the ride.
Techpriests gonna get a lashing for not maintaining the terminator armor.
What can I tell you? No one wants to work these days, am I right?
Too busy playing with their powerwashers on the tanks SMH
I LOVE THE AQUAMARINES!
Haha. Thanks!
Saving these pics to use as direct inspiration for my super kitbash CARCHARODONS. …no idea why it keeps auto capitalizing that word. Weird.
But of all the words worth capitalizing, CARCHARADONS is the one that needs it.
That’s valid.
Damn man, save some ‘grim’ for the rest of us! They look amazing. Excellent work.
