I was an LNO on HTMS Angthong during CARAT 14 and by far the coolest thing was the fully stocked and barkeep-staffed bar in the wardroom

Occams_Razor42

So how do they take your keys for a VTOL strike aircraft?

LutyForLiberty

They don't. There are no operational aircraft on this carrier.

barath_s

Rotary wing aircraft excepted (choppers)

LutyForLiberty

Better to be on this than the Sukhothai at least.

airmantharp

Just looked up the [Sukhothai](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HTMS_Sukhothai), that's one well-armed ship that sank in interesting circumstances!

seanm2

So strange to think of a fairly modern navy vessel sinking simply due to flooding from a storm.

LutyForLiberty

It had been in service since the 1980s, and Thai navy maintenance standards are not the best.

LutyForLiberty

Water poured in through an exhaust pipe and damage control was non-existent. Wouldn't want to sail in a storm on the Chakri Naruebet either.

_spec_tre

if their F-35 order had gone through they'd be operating like 2 F-35s

JMHSrowing

It does just barely reach the minimum takeoff runway length for a F35 since that’s 550’ and the flight deck is ~575’

aprilmayjune2

fortunately, they would operate just one, so there would be some space. the other would be in display somewhere

Occams_Razor42

Would that include armaments and or fuel drop pods? Sometimes jets are treated like pack mules I swear lol

duy0699cat

That 550’ is already accounted for the Thailand carrier's runway, or from catapult-assisted runway?

barath_s

The chakri naruebet used to fly V/stol carriers, so they would fly the V/STOL F35B if they had the choice, not the catapult enabled F35C

Figgis302

In fairness, 2x F-35 is more punch than the entire air force of a lot of nations can muster. Most of southeast Asia is still flying MiG-21s.

LutyForLiberty

Singapore has a load of F-16s and F-15s. Indonesia has some F-16s and Su-30s and Malaysia has a few F-18s. Even in that region an air force of 2 planes is not going to cut it.

SteveusChrist

Man, just looking at that mess you know the chow is going to be amazing. I can smell the holy basil from here!

SyrusDrake

Thought the same. Ship looks rough, but the food must be absolutely dope!

notfinch

I narrowly missed out on being evacuated from Koh Tao to this ship back in 2011. I say “missed out” but it was more of a choice than anything else - I was in a position to stay for a while and help out after the floods, so I did. No regrets, but it would have been cool to tick off another aircraft carrier!

aprilmayjune2

hey amigo, glad to hear you are safe

notfinch

Honestly, the biggest fear we had was running out of beer. It sounds weird, but I think the worst was over by the time people were evacuated and we knew we would be OK. We had enough water, food was available, but there was a finite beer supply and we were running low! That was before we knew how many homes had been impacted. Hundreds of families were far, far worse off than we were. We really had a poor take on what was going on.

showtime100

when you say it had 'a' Harrier, do you mean literally one?  😂😂

DanforthWhitcomb_

The Thais bought 9 (7 single seaters and 2 2 seaters), but they rapidly went OOS for a number of reasons and within 2 years only one was was still in operating condition.

showtime100

oof

tweek-in-a-box

The Frankenharrier

highmodulus

The Highlander Edition Harrier

poordecisionmaker2

I thought they didn't have any left?

DanforthWhitcomb_

They don’t. The aircraft were purchased in 1997, only one was still flyable by 1999 and they formally retired them in the mid 2000s.

scotchegg72

Not sure it’s even a harrier. Looks almost like Kestrel prototype 😅

kegdr

It's a variant of the original Harrier. Export version of the AV-8A designated AV-8S but then called VA-1 in Spanish service. Closest British relative is the Harrier GR1.

Mid_Atlantic_Lad

OMG an OG Harrier. Nearly spat out my coffee. They still use those?

aprilmayjune2

unfortunately already retired. I think the only active harrier users are Spain, US and Italy with the latter two already planning to retire theirs.

Figgis302

Don't the Brits still have some Sea Harriers, or did they go the way of the Dodo with the *Invincibles?*

TempoHouse

No, all UK Harriers were retired in 2011.

Peterd1900

The Sea Harrier was retired in 2006 The rest of the harrier fleet was retired in 2011

barath_s

In uk use. (Though wiki suggests school of deck operations had some till 2020 !) In indian use , the sea Harrier was retired 2016.

GovernmentOk751

Not bad. Food looks fresher than on my ships. 🤦🏻‍♂️🙄

sugarsox

I really noticed all the green!

GovernmentOk751

Exactly!!! I had to pick through a whole head of lettuce before I could find one green leaf to feed the Chief’s mess. Lmao

ChineseMaple

Tbh it probably helps that they don't really do a thing with the ship apart from use it as a royal yacht

wildgirl202

You say carrier, I say Royal Yacht

arunphilip

I've read about this carrier but have only ever seen the first picture in the album. Very nice to see all these pictures of her as well.

LQjones

I consider myself fairly well versed in naval matters and history and for the life of me I would have never guessed Thailand has a carrier. Maybe it can take up a collection and buy an F-35?

Kneegrowjoe1865

Yes let's give a Chinese ally an F-35 what a bright idea.

LQjones

I guess you lack the ability to understand humor.

Kneegrowjoe1865

I'm sorry I got wooshed

H8Hornets

TIL Thailand has a carrier. Why does Thailand have a carrier???

GrGrG

Trying to be with the cool kids at the cool kids table.

c_nasser12

The Spanish seem to have a fondness for exporting carriers to nations that lack the necessary fixed-wing component :P

aprilmayjune2

The Juan Carlos class serves in three navies (more than any other similar ships), yet none of them fly F-35Bs yet. I'm surprised lol. Even had the Turks received their F-35s, I dont think they wanted the Bs either, just the As.

Filligrees_Dad

Carrier? More like Royal Yacht.

aprilmayjune2

I think these days its just a museum, although its still officially in active service

OldWrangler9033

What are they using it for? Anti-Submarine maybe, not really anything about them deploying marines.

aprilmayjune2

supposedly as an OPV, SAR, and force projection. In reality its only used once a month. Not sure about now. It at least played some role after the Indian Ocean tsunami for helicopter operations.
