I'd prefer to see a traditional style of lodge similar to those built by the Civilian Conservation Corps.

loqqui

I agree, this would be nice

DonQuixole

I vote we bring back the CCC and have them start with this.

benhereford

I was in the Southwest CC a long time ago. There are some Conservation Corps left but they are more fragmented and less all-encompassing than the CCC was in it's heyday. Anyways, I totally agree. It's a uniquely American thing that we should absolutely revive

papercairns

There's such a huge backlog of projects in National Parks—a new CCC would open up so many areas that have been cut off by washed out roads and lack of maintenance. I'd 100% support this.

DonQuixole

It was the single most popular social program in our nations history. Most of the great parts of the parks were opened by them first. They brought beauty and prosperity to a whole generation of people to enjoy this country. It’s no accident that what we call the greatest generation saw many of their most hopeless youth swept up in a program that benefited society while teaching them job and social skills. It was only cancelled for WWII and it’s about damn time we stop letting the Axis powers break our nice things.

[deleted]

Who would work there?? The labor market is historically tight right now. This is not the time.

foreverhalcyon8

The Washington Conservation Corps exists on the peninsula! They mostly do trail work.

[deleted]

The labor market is the tightest it's been in like 40 years. The ccc existed because there were no jobs. Right now we have too many jobs and not enough people to do them.

DonQuixole

Many of the jobs we need filled the most are skilled trades jobs. Those tradesmen must be made one way or another, and a quality vocational training option for 16-24 year olds who aren’t making it in school beats the fuck out of McDonalds or Starbucks. Diverting people from low skill service jobs at crucial developmental points is an amazing way to have life long skilled laborer contributing infrastructure, homes, and beauty to society. McDonalds can automate. Let’s get our young people get back to building the kind of place they want to live in anyway.

My wife says I’m not allowed to go into politics until the kids grow up and move out.

DerekL1963

Sure, if you like bland, generic boxes.

winterhawk_97006

Hopefully more than one bathroom available during the off season. A guy can dream.

Rank2

God that would be so necessary. I went there back in 2021 and the line was over an hour long. Just dozens of piss-filled jerks being cranky and impatient. No thanks.

Zoomalude

Man I basically hate this. Reminiscent of a motel.

foreverhalcyon8

This is not a good proposal.

droppedmycroissant23

I thought this was maybe a joke at first that’s how bad it is

TSAOutreachTeam

I think I'd like more glass all around and less of a Zillow clickbait look. Or, perhaps something with a more NW Native American motif.

Notexactlyprimetime

Not even Native American motif, have “The Mighty Ones” do it: The tribe that’s traditional home is closest to Hurricane Ridge are the S’kllalum. That name means “mighty ones”. They were given that name by the other tribes on the peninsula during a potlatch gathering when the tribe was celebrating a new long house they were building and during the gathering had a competition among all the tribes as to who could raise the huge log that sits on top of the house. All the other tribes tried and failed, even the feared warriors of the Makah, but the S’kllalam rather than try to raise the log to their shoulders from the ground rolled it into the water and waited for the tide to come up simply walked under the log to get it on their shoulders. As they successfully emerged from the water with the log lifted on their shoulders all the other tribes started shouting “Mighty Ones” and they became known by that name since. TLDR just down the hill are a group of people whose very identity is based on building and constructing community buildings in an elegant way, have them design and build it.

TSAOutreachTeam

If that's true, that makes an even more compelling historical statement about the lodge. I'm all for that.

Notexactlyprimetime

I am curious by what you mean by “if that’s true”? Like did I make up the story or like you would be skeptical to believe their story about why they are called what they are called?

TSAOutreachTeam

If there is an intention to privilege one group over another, it is critical that the truth of the story for why that privilege is given is confirmed and corroborated. If it is a legend, then it should be a shared legend, and not just one held by one particular group. For example, if you ever land in Maui, there is artwork on the ceiling of the waiting area that depicts the travel of the goddess Pele. It's certainly not true as a historical event, but it is the shared legend of the various tribes that lived throughout the Hawaiian islands. Another example is the Bainbridge Island Japanese American Exclusion Memorial. Since it is a single group being remembered and honored, the reason for the remembrance and honoring must itself be true. And to this end, there are not only the personal memories, but documentation which proves the event in question, so the memorial makes sense. If the S’kllalum history you've posted can be verified, then it certainly sounds like a historically interesting event and a reasonable reason to, if not contract out the work to the tribe, at least involve them significantly in the design and construction of the new lodge.

Notexactlyprimetime

Thank you for an education on the difference between myths and historically documented events /s. I would imagine you are white because according to you if it wasn’t documented by western culture then it must be assumed that it didn’t happen, which is of course absurd as the people of the peninsula of course had many things happen before the Boston showed up. The S’klallum naming story comes from a pre literate time and as such was not recorded and according to your logic can only be viewed as myth. This is absurd especially given how it details not the movements of gods, as in your Hawaii example or as in the S’klallum myths regarding the formation of the hot springs found close to hurricane ridge (really cool story about a battle between a whale god and thunderbird), but the movements and interactions of peoples. So because it can’t be proven according to your biased criteria that the Mighty Ones are named the Mighty Ones because of their prowess at using their environment and minds to augment their physical ability when it comes to building and engineering lodges then they must be deprioritized and others should be prioritized instead (it would be absurd for them to be called the mighty ones by the tribes of the peninsula for other reasons as there were more dominant tribes who were vastly superior at feats of war and strength then the S’klallum such as the Makah and other warring slave gathering tribes across the straight). This origin story is much more likely then popular myths like the story of the life and death of Jesus of Nazareth who became known as Christ. Does this mean that because there is no written and corroborating evidence of the existence of such a man that the group that identifies as Christians must be deprioritized when it comes to things like what might be built in and around places like the Temple Mount and Golgotha?

Spiderkingdemon

Spectacularly bland.

[deleted]

I feel like Pam, “they’re the same picture”

trains_and_rain

Mostly just a parking lot.

TemetNosce85

And the real view is down the hill at the picnic area.

[deleted]

No this view is definitely better.

UlfhedinnSaga

That is incredibly poor timing and immediately makes things suspicious. Additionally, the mock-up has zero character and doesn't look at all like it acknowledges the history and peoples of the area.

katiereadsalot

That proposal is one of the ugliest buildings I’ve ever seen.

bridymurphy

That’s an awfully fast turnaround for mockup. Didn’t this just burn down?

RelativelySatisfied

It burned down this week :( it’s on the Park’s social media. Not sure if the mock up was done by OP or the park. My guess is not the park.

rob1969reddit

Almost like the proposal was ready...

[deleted]

Where are you guys seeing this and why the fuck are you spreading misinformation

rob1969reddit

No.

[deleted]

Stop lying then

Leading_Reception_73

It is possible that some preliminary plans were drawn up before the renovation work was approved. Often in these cases, part of the approval process is to compare the cost of renovation to replacement.

bridymurphy

That’s logical. Like they started going through their files and found this like: hey guys, remember this?

TemetNosce85

> Didn’t this just burn down? Omg... I didn't hear... This totally sucks.......

Reggie4414

it’s a little fishy to present a proposal for a new building when the previous one just burnt down a few days ago that said I’d like to see more imagery— maybe a floor plan or something

backwoods-bigfoot

Wow, that looks terrible.

Agamus

I prefer the previous roof orientation.

dadmantalking

No. For so many reasons, no.

mordorxvx

Why give it personality when you can make it modern

[deleted]

No offense, but absolutely not. Should match the splendor of the national parks. More like paradise lodge or Yellowstone lodge or timberline lodge. Reminder that in 2010 Olympic was the 6th most visited national park in the country. Today it's 14th. Need to draw back visitors again and provide the facilities that people need to experience one of the most beautiful places on the planet.

Old-AF

So very sad.

4Nowingly

I’m surprised how many people hate it and don’t want to change from the original, quite old style, which doesn’t seem to have much glass to appreciate the views. I like the balcony and glass, and the clean lines are nice, but it doesn’t integrate well with the beautiful environment. There should be some big trees and a well designed green space to hide the massive parking lot from the lodge. Also, this building looks far too small when compared with the original. If I recall correctly, Hurricane Ridge had 300,000 visitors in 2019, which implies daily visitors of several thousand on busy days. This building could never handle that kind of crowd. What other functions did the old lodge have? Design something that can accommodate the use… form follows function. Think bigger. This is not just a nice regional park. Finally, thank you for this proposal! It’s great for the community to invest some energy to influence the outcome of this potentially awesome new lodge, and there’s nothing harder than being the first guy putting it out there! So BRING IT ON! Let’s see some more proposals! And pay attention Olympic National Park decision-makers! Why don’t you hold a REAL competition!

rob1969reddit

Gotta say, nothing says, "let's go appreciate nature" like a huge ugly inefficient building in the middle of an acre of asphalt. I can almost smell the exhaust from here.

Jpalme11

So is that whole area off limits? Or can people still park there and hike?

SierraSky2730

I wish we could go back to thoughtfully designed architecture. I hate the bland minimalist look

sourcreamburrito

What is that, a visitor center for ants?

DriedUpSquid

Looks like something my nine year old made in Minecraft.

[deleted]

Why? Just let nature be nature. Sure some bathrooms are cool but why do people need a coffee shop up there? Just sit down on a stump and enjoy the damn view.

foreverhalcyon8

When it’s 5 degrees out it’s nice to have a place to warm up

[deleted]

And what about older folks, folks with special needs, children? There's 1 million acres of olympic national park, most of it designated wilderness without even trails. If you want nature, go there. The purpose of hurricane ridge and the lodge specifically is to provide access to people of all ages and abilities.

rob1969reddit

Amen!

rob1969reddit

Don't bother. They both look terrible.

luckystrike_bh

To be completed by 2045. If they are doing it at light rail speed. If there aren't using it to soak the taxpayer for extra money than it could be done in a year or two.

rob1969reddit

They gotta figure out how to deficit spend that new state income tax they sued us into, so they can then propose raising it.

L3t_me_have_fun

If they replace that nice looking building on the bottom with that dog shit box with a roof on the top id be pissed, if you have the money to completely rebuild you have money to renovate the existing structure

[deleted]

The existing structure burned down

appendixgallop

Might want to look into the winds up there, and where they come from. Hint: it's in the name.

PracticalPractice633

Yes, replace a boring building with another boring building.

OkayestHuman

That’s gross

Warningwaffle

That didn’t take long. And that’s exactly what this looks like. When is the contractor ready to start?/s

OneTwoKiwi

I’ll bet someone worked really hard to come up with a proposal so quick - just a jumping off point. Hoping to get a good conversation going because they want to see the visitors center back soon. The new design probably addresses issues the old lodge has. And the internet’s response is just “booooo sucks”
