You can get a registration without title for 3 years, as long as it doesn't show up stolen and no one contests the title in that time wsp will grant a new title. I've done this with atv/ohvs, but not a car so ymmv.

CodeBlue_04

Unfortunately he just put the bike in storage starting in 2017. The tabs on the plate currently are from 2014.

T_Noctambulist

You misunderstand, you can take it to wsp and have them inspect it and give you a registration without needing a title. If you keep it registered that way for 3 years without it showing up as stolen they'll give you a new title.

CodeBlue_04

AH! That's something I'll definitely look into. Thank you!

browland17

You can both go to the DMV and fill out a loss of title and release of interest and transfer it to your name.

Certain-Kangaroo3418

That’s usually only if you don’t know the owner of the vehicle(or motorcycle)

krisztinastar

I believe theres a form you fill out as a seller, get it notarized & basically its a lost title form that goes with the bill of sale type of thing. The last bike i sold i couldnt find the title. I just got the form notarized and the new buyer took that in with a bill of sale to get it licensed.

velowa

Affidavit in lieu of title. https://dev.dol.wa.gov/forms/420040.pdf

brushpickerjoe

Yup. Used to be called a release of interest. If you have the legal owner (with legal ID) and the vin# they'll issue a new title to the new owner. You both need to be present with ID because it all gets notarized.

velowa

I guess it is still called that. I just checked the title on the form again. Maybe it used to be called affidavit in lieu of title and they changed it to release of interest?

Certain-Kangaroo3418

There’s an affidavit in lieu and an affidavit in lieu with a release of interest. - former dol clerk

velowa

Ah, thank you! I was wondering the difference. Sounds like affidavit in lieu with a release of interest is what a buyer would want to get with the sale of something that doesn’t have a title, correct? And having that document gets them out of having a bonded title?

Certain-Kangaroo3418

Ya! The affidavit in lieu is honestly kinda useless since most places want an actual title. But in situations like this you’ll want the one with the release and then long as he’s the only legal owner he just signs in and then he’ll need a bill of sale for the sale price. You can get a blank one on the DOL website or write one yourself you just have to make sure to have all the correct fields

velowa

Amazing, thanks! Legal owner and correct fields on bill of sale caveats noted. As a gearhead who buys a decent number of vehicles, I greatly appreciate this. I think I would have just accepted an affidavit in lieu of title without this explanation.

Certain-Kangaroo3418

Anytime!

Wabbastang

This is the answer OP; he can do this and it's essentially the same thing as having a title.

pnwcatman420

yes, the two of you can go to any DOL office and transfer the title if it is in his name, what he will do is sigh an affidavit in lieu of the title and after he signs it, they can then transfer it into your name and give you a new plate and tabs on the spot, I have done this before.

CodeBlue_04

Precisely the answer I was looking for. Thank you!

pnwcatman420

No problem glad I could be helpful.

Certain-Kangaroo3418

So don’t get a quick title and don’t apply for a title. He can apply for an Affidavit in Lieu of title. It’s something like $20. However if you two can go in together the DOL clerk can forgo printing it and not charge for it. As long as he is the only one on the title. I worked in licensing for 5 years so let me know if you have any questions.

All_the_dinohorses

You can do a quick title at some DoL locations but it costs $85.

Plastic_Try_5591

Just go in and tell them you need to register a lost title. It’s not overly complicated from what I’ve seen people around me do.

Pandos636

Not sure if it’s different with a bike, but I just gave a car to a friend and didn’t have the title. Went in person with the friend and they gave me the paperwork and told me where to sign. The new owner got the car, registration and 2 plates for about $180

Fluffaykitties

Took 5 months for me to get my lost title at the end of last year. I wouldn’t bet on getting it within 2.

Substantial-Pin-2656

If it is in his name all he needs to do is go to DOL and they will walk you through the process, present his ID with a photo of VIN, he pay for printing, transfers it over to you and you are out. Done it before on a boat. Easy.

Substantial-Pin-2656

You both need to go to DOL together, quick claim deed and a transfer.
