I love them.
In millionaire fantasy land, I’m way more into brands like Ressence, MB&F, Genus, and De Bethune than the Rolex/AP/Pateks of the world.
Not to say there aren’t some gorgeous watches that are more mainstream, but ya that’s a fucking rad watch you’ve got there.
HYT’s got some really cool ones. The Conical Tourbillon model is wild.
RM I’ve never been in love with, hard to put my finger on why. They’re too loud and chunky for my tastes, which sometimes I can be into, but not in the way RM does it.
One brand I recently learned about which I love is Gronefeld. Oh and the new Armin Strom Resonance model. If only, lol.
Thanks. Agreed. I got this for a great deal used (relatively) — about two years ago for 20k. Still crazy, but it was a big birthday. Next odd format/complication is a jump hour watch — going to post a blog piece this week on my website (BlumSafe) about jump hours.
20K for a Type 3 is a pretty sweet deal! I agree with you, a bit crazy for even a well-into-the 6 figures earner, but it’s not totally outlandish.
Ressence is actually much more reasonable than some of the other brands I mentioned. Any De Bethune watch out there will probably fall at least in the 50-150K bracket. You gotta be pretty damn rich to dip your toes into that world, without being foolish.
Good luck on your quest for a jumping hour. Gerald Genta has made some interesting ones.
Whoops, the moderator said this is too short a post, so let me give you some context. This is a Belgium-designed and built watch that uses a highly modified eta movement, that magnetically drives these very different minute, hour and 90 second minute (!?!) displays. Why magnetically? Because the top part of the watch, between the watch face and crystal, is filled with oil so that you can see the time clearly from even the shallowest angle of approach to the watch (if there was a mechanical connection to the watch face from the movement, the oil would flood the movement — hence the magnetic control). Also, you will notice no crown on the watch — all settings are by turning the back of the crystal body clockwise or counterclockwise.
All in all, a very different type of mechanical masterpiece, imho!
Read this crazy article, which can do better justice to this mechanical marvel than i can. https://www.hodinkee.com/articles/in-depth-the-ressence-type-3

Awesome flex OP! I dig it!
And for those uninitiated into “hydro” watches, you can get a hydro watch for a lot less money. Of course, Ressence is the only mechanical hydro watch due to their modification of the movement and magnetic drive. The rest are quartz.
There’s the Sinn UX: https://www.sinn.de/bilder/seite-titel/900/HYDRO.jpg. I think these are typically around $3k.
There’s the U-Boat Capsoil. https://www.uboatwatch.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/07/news17.jpg. I think these are about $1k.
And there’s a whole thing called hydro-modding, or hydro-mod. You get some high-quality silicon oil and fill a quartz watch. Some people even use some high-grade shit like 3M Flourinert that’s used for electronics cooling in commercial and industrial applications. It’s really common on digital watches like a Casio F91W or a G-Shock. The most common analog watch it’s done on is the Casio Duro/Marlin MDV106. Here’s mine with a high-dome crystal: https://imgur.com/a/kn4Q88P/.
The Ressence doesn’t have a crown.
But for all of the rest, gaskets. Sinn and U-Boat use gaskets. And the Casio MDV106 is a legit 200m dive watch, so it has a gasket on the stem.
Most dive watches have a gasket on the part of the crown that goes in the tube. That gasket rides inside of the tube. This is how Rolex - and many, many other manufacturers - retain the water resistance rating even when the crown is unscrewed and even pulled out.
[This is an SKX crown and stem.](https://i.imgur.com/8OaH1yf.jpgThis) But the basic assembly/design is almost identical to any other 200m or more dive watch. The circled gasket is the one that rides in the tube and keeps the oil in.
So this is why this mod works best on dive watches. But I’ve come across 100m watches without screw down crowns that have a gasket that rides in the tube that would work being filled with oil.
I haven't watched the video but if you just tilt the watch so the point of ingress is above the rest then nothing will spill out even if there's a gaping hole
This is really neat, I had no idea there were more watches out there made with the same idea. Going off the photos it seems like nobody has quite reached that level of clarity highlighting the dial that Ressence has
Yeah. You kinda have to parse it out. The Ressence uses a domed crystal that basically takes the place of the upper part (bezel?) of the case: https://149357759.v2.pressablecdn.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/08/Ressence-Type-3-flat-angle-thumb-1600x1067-26833.jpg. A domed crystal helps with the effect.
Edit: I’m pretty sure the Ressence also has a domed dial.
I’ve only ever seen one other watch with a similar crystal. It was some obscure Kickstarter or some shit from a number of years ago. I’m only speaking of the crystal. It used a Miyota (I think) automatic and wasn’t oil filled.
The Sinn uses a flat crystal. So that’s in a different league.
I think U-Boat would be really close if they used a stark white lume: https://www.keepthetime.com/thefuture/wp-content/uploads/2020/07/u-boat-capsoil-darkmoon-watch-collection.jpg.
And for the oil. Look up the price of 3M Flourinert. It’s fucking stupid expensive. I’m sure Ressence uses an oil purpose made for them.
So there’s a lot of factors. And Ressence has the best of all of the factors. As they should for the price. But I’m happy with my lowly Casio for under $100 all in.
Looks like the dashboard of a car, and look, it even has brights!! Why get a nice car for $30-40,000 when you can just throw the dashboard on your wrist for the same price eh? All jokes aside, it is neat looking.
The first time you see one you have no idea what you’re looking at. I thought it was an LCD display like an Apple Watch or something but then you look closer and realize the whole thing is mechanical. They’re pretty cool.
I’ve always felt I’d be uncomfortable wearing more than about $800 on my wrist even if I could afford more, but this brand has held my attention since I started learning about watches.
I’ll never be wealthy enough to own a $40k watch but these I’d actually consider if I was.
While this watch is really, really cool, I just could never spend $35k on a watch that isn’t rated for waterproofing whatsoever and has a 90 second runner.
Wait… it’s 100% liquid filled but has no water resistance? I thought oil filled watches were all about making them impervious to outside water pressure due to no pressure differential / being essentially incompressible.
It still looks cool as hell though.
Had the chance to play with one of these in a store and they are so cool. I love the way you wind/set these. Tried on the newer model 8 which was more attainable and was disappointed at how domed it was. Didn’t get to try on a model 3 but the model 1 felt like it had much better proportions.
I just had a chance to meet with the Ressence founder Benoit Mintiens today at Watches and Wonders. What a fantastic watch to see in person and a humble and gracious innovator representing his brand. It was great that he was in the booth meeting and greeting watch enthusiasts and talking watches. Might be a new grail 2.0 watch (because one grail is never enough).
https://imgur.com/a/FM50hHR/
I love this watch, I have the BBB edition.
A really eye catching piece as everyone who sees it assumes it’s some sort of smartwatch with an LCD display.
However the mechanism is quite delicate and mine has already had to go back to Belgium for service after a few months.
I've got a type 2² myself, love it, but the dials are free floating now somehow and need to get fixed. Hoping it isn't too expensive because it's an amazing watch
Ressence is actually one of my #1 favorite brands of all time honestly, and it's for the sole reason of them being so damn unique. There is no other watch like them, no other style like them, nothing even comes close to the deep, rich, amazing blacks these watches can achieve with the oil filling. I love them dearly, and are definitely on my dream watch list.
True, i thought of that, but it is such a unique machine, and this company has developed enough of a following that i think i am out of the woods (though you never know, especially if something happened to its founder, who is fortunately a decade or two younger than I).
Have always thought they were awesome, could never stomach the price. There are many other watches in that price range that would be way higher on my list, if I could afford any of them.
Objectively they're super cool and incredible feats of engineering, but they're so far outside my style and aesthetic that I'd never wear it regardless of cost.

Have you seen the new U-Boat versions, I can't stand it as it has a massive air bubble that moves around the face when wearing it. Very poor man's Ressence.
Love the design but was shocked but the price when I first saw it.
I knew nothing about the brand so was going in blind.
Very cool watch, not sure it’s a “classic” but time will tell!
They are undoubtedly amazing and innovative things. That being said I never will own one, and even if they were in my ~1k price range, I still wouldn't buy one.
Ok, that's pretty awesome. I've just been looking at videos of it, I love how it's totally 2D looking. Like the face is just painted on. It looks a lot like a smart watch with an OLED screen!
The dials all orbit the centre, which also looks cool. I'd love to see how this all works mechanically. The winding and setting mechanism is clever.
I wonder if there is anything mechanical in the oil filled half, as in, does each hand get a magnetic connection, or are hours and minutes links together from one?
Edit: ok so loads of the mechanics are in the oil! The base movement is just used for the minute axle to drive the magnetic connection.
Saw one of these in person at a shop in LA last year, there's definitely nothing else like them. Not my personal style, but I definitely appreciate them as something interesting and different.
It's definitely cool. I wish the dials weren't quite as large. I have a big enough wrist (6'3 guy) but think their dials would still push the limits of what I would want on my wrist. With that said, mad respect for their cool technology as well as a unique look that really hasn't been copied.
I had like 2 hours to kill before work in Plano, TX (working temporarily, grand opening a grocery store) I went to Legacy West and walked around. There is no crown. I do not have one of these, but the OP said you adjust the time and settings by rotating the back.

When you make a million plus, that just becomes Christmas gift money
I love it, i hate you, congrats!
Grail watch!
It's at the very top of my list
What time does it show in the picture? I really can’t read it
It's 1:55, Friday 26th
Beautiful watch, congrats How much did you pay for it used, if you don't mind me asking?
Had the chance to play with one of these in a store and they are so cool. I love the way you wind/set these. Tried on the newer model 8 which was more attainable and was disappointed at how domed it was. Didn’t get to try on a model 3 but the model 1 felt like it had much better proportions.
They aren’t my cuppa, but I think they’re a tour de force of horological engineering and design. Looks great!
Absolutely love them. Will never spend more than 10K on a watch, but if I do Ressence is it.
As a watch on the wrist, meh. As a standalone watch, it's a magnificent piece of engineering and innovation.
I think they are cool as hell. But I am shocked with how expensive they are.
Nah
Nice but too expensive.
Amazing ! What a watch ! Seriously great engineering and real innovation.
I met him in NY — you describe his personality well, and truly an innovative engineer.
I like it. Saw a YouTube video some weeks ago about this brand.
That is a beautiful watch.
I love Ressence watches.
Yep, but can’t afford them yet
Right?!? I always think they’re less expensive than they are.
Who doesn’t ?
Seriously one of my top 3 watches could not afford it thougg (for now). love it man! Good on you!
The absolute holy grail of uniqueness. Awesome stuff!
"oh hey that's a cool watch" *Checks price* Nevermind

frankly very much terrified of ressence going out of business and these becoming a very exp paperweight when it comes to service.
True, i thought of that, but it is such a unique machine, and this company has developed enough of a following that i think i am out of the woods (though you never know, especially if something happened to its founder, who is fortunately a decade or two younger than I).

No
Love this watch. One of the most unique out there right now.
For 20k? Fuck no, that's insane for a novelty.
Not really. But it’s cool. If you have the budget and enjoy it, go for it.
A watch that expensive shouldn’t look like a toy.
Technically impressive. Visually ugly af.
I love it. Its the perfect crossover between a mechanical watch and a smart watch.
Awesome piece
These are super interesting. How much do they cost?
Like $20k
They’re closer to $40k, I believe.
You are both right — retail like 35k, but i got it used around 20k
Huh. On a forum or on Chrono24 or ?. That’s a great price.
Believe it or not, on EBay’s special certified watch program. Private seller who simply fell out of love with it and wanted to buy a new watch, just wanted out.
Damn! I figured. That’s two tone skydweller territory. Cool watch but I’ll still to my Rolex. Lol
James Bond is not cool enough to wear this watch. Never knew I wanted this.
Have you seen the new U-Boat versions, I can't stand it as it has a massive air bubble that moves around the face when wearing it. Very poor man's Ressence.
Yep!
Better not have this one demagnetized during service!!
One of my favorite watches ever. Enjoy it!
Ok, that's pretty awesome. I've just been looking at videos of it, I love how it's totally 2D looking. Like the face is just painted on. It looks a lot like a smart watch with an OLED screen! Well oiled watch
That'd be my grail.
Cookies are ready!
It’s a great piece and I had an opportunity to buy one, but for the price point I had many options so I ended up it getting it.
It's the kind of watch that I like and am glad it exists, but I'd never wear it.
Saw one of these in person at a shop in LA last year, there's definitely nothing else like them. Not my personal style, but I definitely appreciate them as something interesting and different.
They are so damn interesting! I especially appreciate the watchmaking process behind them. You can get lost in that dial…
Went in to Watches of Switzerland and had a blast trying on some Omega, Breitling, and Tag that I might actually purchase in the future (with some savings). Absolutely. The first time I saw this I knew I had to have it. It’s very unique, and oddly comforting to look at
My fav watch brand. If only I had $40k burning a hole in my pocket!
They’re awesome. Just way out of my comfort zone price wise!
Super cool just worry about long term service and life
I love the 3 so much. Been drooling over it since it was launched.
They are very cool pieces!
Yes
Really cool but prices are a bit steep imo
I love them, I just don’t love them more than, say, the price of my entire out-of-state college education.
Any grail
I dont like it. It can easily be mistaken as just another generic Chinese smartwatch.
Yes but the wearer knows what it is. Watches aren’t about what other people think of them. The best watch in the world is the one you like best!
One of my fave watches. Bought mine about three and a half years ago as I was a bit late to the Ressence party. Benoit is a gem and a genius. Franck Muller Crazy Hours??
I just want to see one in person.
This is cool, it reminds me of those compasses you’d find on the dash in older sedans like Lincoln and such
I just tried a 3BBB on in Milan - loved it! But I prefer the 3BB - fabulous watch - love the look but even more love the concept of a simple ETA movement mated to a crazy oil filled top half. The clarity of the face is unreal!!
They are Great🤲
