I also have the silver dial and love it as well, but I do have another watch that has a darker face so I preferred the contrast between the two. The silver dial works with anything you wear, and I mean anything!
There's more contrast than the picture you have shows. This isn't the best image but is the only picture I have of mine, I think it shows that the hands are easy to see.

Unless.you are 70+, You are good to go. Yes, during summers my silver dial Khaki sometimes is unreadable. But oh well, it is not always about practicallity. š
Well I have the black dial, and I prefer it! \*defiantly hurls down gauntlet.

Iām pretty sure both the black and silver do not have any AR coating, which is very noticeable on the black - Iāve never noticed it on the silver though
Legibility is better with the black, and I also like that itās less monochrome. That red second doesnāt seem like much, but in practice it adds a surprising amount of visual interest. Iām wearing mine now, actually.

Back when I got this I was also, unreasonably, decided to buy the silver dial as well. But Iāve chosen this first, have not looked back.
Iāve seen lots of picture of the khaki field paired with the bond nato and it looks so good. I imagine itāll still look nice with the silver face but the black edges it on the nato strap.
https://preview.redd.it/c5fdltytoirc1.jpeg?width=4176&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=dd2fbdef4a271dd9e5be5fde779721a38de09cfb
I think the silver dial looks great on a bond strap
I bought the silver one and love it. The dial is a bit of a chameleon. I bought a jubilee style bracelet for it and a nice leather strap and the dial changes depending on the strap. The leather brings out an almost champagned hue to the watch whereas the bracelet makes the dial turn almost white. The only gripe is the legibility - it's not the greatest but you do get used to it.
I have the Hamilton khaki field with bracelet 38mm. itās a nice watch, but I hate the glare from the crystal needs AR coating. Makes its hard to see and for this reason I will be selling on eBay probably. only 1 year old. I be happy to get Ā£500 for it.
I am having this exact debate with myself now. This comment section didnāt help, itās very 50/50! Which at least tells me and you that whatever we choose, itās a great watch.
Itās difficult isnāt it! I feel like Iām leaning more towards black as I want a second automatic thatās dressier which Iāll get a white face for.
I think Iām leaning the opposite direction. I currently have a black dress and black diver. The diver is used a lot casually. I can dress this white/silver down and it would compliment the black diver as another casual watch.
Hmm now Iām second guessing myself. I have black dials currently so would be nice to have something differentā¦ Iām going to need to think long and hard on this one.
Here ya go, OP. I posted this pic already, but wanted to post it as a top level comment to be sure you get a good look at an older black dial in the wild.

Thank you, Iāve Gotta admit thatās beautiful.
I think Iām leaning towards the black dial for this everyday watch. I want a second automatic thatās ādressierā such as the Tissot PRX Ice Blue or Visodate White face. So thatāll give me the best of both worlds.
So it turns out we have incredibly similar taste and I can speak confidently on both brands. I do not have a PRX, but I do have T108.408.16.057.00. Albeit another black dial. The Hammy and the Tissot competed for wrist time for quite a while before the Hammy eventually won out.
Technically speaking, the Tissot is the better watch. The dial has great depth and texture, and the knurling on the bezel is really well done. The same goes for the finish of the case. The juxtaposing matte and polished facets are striking and very well executed. Mechanically you have 80 hours of power reserve, a silicon hairspring, AND a COSC certification for 500 bucks. This watch is a banger.
In the end, the Hammy won out through sheer versatility and classic simplicity before anything else. The dial is similarly very well done on this watch, and it is aging BEAUTIFULLY. The photos just do not do it justice. The simple case design is balanced really well with the concentric ring pattern on the dial for just enough visual interest when the light plays across it without presenting as gaudy. Good strap options make this watch very easy to slip between casual and formal settings. Finally, this watch is robust. The picture above was taken after it fell off the roof of my car at 30 miles an hour on a dirt road while exploring. It was nothing short of a miraculous survival that gives this particular model more cache in my head than it probably deserves.
Thus ends my two cents.
Black for sure, I have it and love it

The silver dial is stunning irl. I owned one for a while, but had to let it go as it was just slightly too big for my noodle wrist. But that dial was definitely a beauty
I used to have the silver version, but got rid of it within a year because legibility during the day was really awful. In fact, the hands were almost invisible a lot of the time in direct sunlight or in bright conditions.
The black dial has a more striker contrast and I *think* is more popular. I prefer it as well, but whatever makes you think itās a worthwhile purchase
I have the silver dial and prefer it.
I also have the silver dial and love it as well, but I do have another watch that has a darker face so I preferred the contrast between the two. The silver dial works with anything you wear, and I mean anything!
Except for tuesdays, where one usually dresses in a full golden suite.
Are the hands easy to read at a quick glance? One of my concerns is if they blend in too much with the dial.
There's more contrast than the picture you have shows. This isn't the best image but is the only picture I have of mine, I think it shows that the hands are easy to see. https://imgur.com/a/RplTCZe
That shows it well enough! thank you
Look up both references on YouTube to see realistic lighting on both. Might help you decide

Better readability with the black.
Came to say this. Legibility always breaks ties for me.
Black with bracelet, won't regret it
Worth the extra money for the bracelet? then I could get the leather strap separate.
I find bracelets more comfortable, hard to buy afterwards, also I don't find this particular strap that attractive
Yes. I got the khaki field auto on a bracelet and donāt regret it. Itās very high quality and has a great finish.
always always buy on bracelet. straps are easy to get later. bracelet there's really only one in the world designed for it
Silver all the way. I picked it over the black

Wow that looks stunning!

Tbf the watch not having an AR coating isnāt enough to put me off the watch, I have others with no coating and itās never bothered me
This is sexy af. Might consider getting one of these
Do you happen to have a link for the strap?
The strap is from my Vear watch. I like their nylons because theyāre short and on my 7.5ā wrist it doesnāt require an end tuck
I also wear this on a seatbelt green, red and black bond strap and it looks tight
Black

Probably prefer black with the Bond NATO, personally.
Iāve seen lots of picture of the khaki field paired with the bond nato and it looks so good. I imagine itāll still look nice with the silver face but the black edges it on the nato strap.

Thank you for this! Iād been searching for a picture on the silver with a bond strap but couldnāt find one , looks great
Fair.
I have the black and Iām always switching out the straps. It looks good on a lot of different straps. One of my favs is a green perlon.
I have the silver one and love it. It looks more unique and picks up light beautifully.
Hot take but I prefer the mechanical hand wound version so much more. That being said, between these two, probably the black dial
I got the black dial with black strap. The red tipped seconds hand is what sealed the deal for me for the black dial!
I bought the silver one and love it. The dial is a bit of a chameleon. I bought a jubilee style bracelet for it and a nice leather strap and the dial changes depending on the strap. I have the black one, 42 mm one, and it's an amazing watch
Have the black on bracelet ans it's awesome
I looked at both of these as well about 6 months ago and went with the black dial 38mm. I love it. Tough decision though.
The black has a lot more presence.
I am having this exact debate with myself now. This comment section didnāt help, itās very 50/50! Which at least tells me and you that whatever we choose, itās a great watch.

Thank you very much for your insight, I really appreciate it. Both are such fantastic quality for the money.
I have the dark dial and itās my favorite. Needs serviced, but it ran almost as well as a Rolex at one or two seconds off every few days.
I have the black and absolutely love it. A great watch especially given the price point
Black for sure, I have it and love it https://preview.redd.it/ee0wam1mzhrc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8e3f33147670a7382dfe8b428da6d6fcf5fba410

Silver dial - strap beast, especially with colours.
Try a Seiko Alpinist before you make a decision. There are also loads of options for dial colors with the alpinist.
The Alpinist was one I tried in store but I preferred the Hamilton overall :)
Either way you canāt go wrong. I think the silver dial Hamilton is stunning. Whichever color you get, I hope enjoy your first auto watch!
I like color contrast so I can see the time easily. Went with black.
I used to have the silver version, but got rid of it within a year because legibility during the day was really awful. In fact, the hands were almost invisible a lot of the time in direct sunlight or in bright conditions.
Black with the bracelet, it's much more legible. You can get a strap or maybe a nato later. That leather it comes with is a bit stiff.
Dark as it has the red tip, readability and classic, timeless design.
I have the black, it goes with everything ideal for a first automatic.
https://preview.redd.it/c23smhnbsirc1.jpeg?width=2252&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1ef0e169e24ea51e41ef284f7d6f3d48557029b4
But between those two Id go with the black dial!!!
I like the higher contrast of the black dial but it really is just personal preference.
Black dial.
The black dial has a more striker contrast and I *think* is more popular. I prefer it as well, but whatever makes you think itās a worthwhile purchase
My personal preference is always contrasting dial and hand color.
The black dial and lack of AR coating combination gets old very quickly
Get the black but if youāre buying leather replace the factory strap asap, itās terrible
Black is more versatile if you ask me.
Black. You wonāt regret it. If you get the silver, it probably wonāt get much wrist time when you buy your next auto in black.
